England opener fined for umpire abuse

By News / Wire

Jason Roy has been hit with his second fine of the World Cup, having unleashed a foul-mouthed tirade at an umpire while marching England to victory over Australia, but the in-form opener is in no doubt of missing Sunday’s final through suspension.

Roy top-scored in England’s eight-wicket win in the semi-final, passing 50 for the third consecutive time since returning from a hamstring injury.

However, the knock of 85 was marred by an uncontrollable fit of indignant rage directed at umpire Kumar Dharmasena.

Roy fumed after being wrongly given out caught behind, with replays confirming his bat was nowhere near the bouncer delivered by Pat Cummins.

Roy called for a review – despite opening partner Jonny Bairstow having already wasted the team’s one referral – then animatedly attempted to push his case with both Dharmasena and Marais Erasmus.

The 28-year-old eventually accepted his marching orders but continued to vent, seemingly describing the incorrect decision as a “f****g” embarrassment.

Roy was given two demerit points, equalling the heaviest penalty for dissent handed down since the International Cricket Council (ICC) adopted its current system in 2016, and fined 30 per cent of his match fee.

Roy has now collected three demerit points at the event. He was booked for an audible obscenity during a clash with Pakistan and fined 15 per cent of that match fee.

“I was on the toilet, ironically. So I’ve heard what happened, but I can’t imagine he would be (at risk of being suspended),” England captain Eoin Morgan said, when asked about the incident on Thursday.

Morgan was keen to keep a lid on things after England stormed into their first World Cup final in 27 years.

“If you had offered us the position to play in a final the day after we were knocked out of 2015 World Cup, I would have laughed at you,” the Irishman said.

“I wouldn’t get too carried away yet. It is obviously a very exciting time for everybody.

“New Zealand throughout the whole tournament has been probably the hardest side to beat and the best side in the group stages.”

Morgan also downplayed fears about Bairstow, who required ongoing treatment after appearing to tweak his hamstring or quad while batting during the comfortable chase.

“I’m not sure what it was but he seemed to move alright after it, so it is not very concerning,” Morgan said

“It might be a niggle, we don’t know until he is scanned.

“But after it, he seemed to move well, so that’s a good sign.”

I'll take both trolling and ridiculous.

This is either trolling or ridiculous. How were the Australian players meant to see what the onfield umpire couldn't? Roy's reaction was a disgrace too. If that were an Australian player, the English press would never let us hear the end of it. If Bairstow didn't waste a review on the plumbest LBW I've ever seen it wouldn't have been an issue.

"Decision" should have been referred to the NRL Bunker. They would have sorted it out!

That carry on was nothing but that of a spoilt brat. It was shocking. He should be suspended for that. I don't mind aggro to other players to a point, but never to the umpire.

.......And Baristow's health should come first and he should be rested. Where's a pedantic insurance company when you need one?

This should have definetly been a minimum Level 2 offence and a suspension. Roy did have one point already. How they worked out to give two points is a completely mystery. Compare it to whats happened with Rabada's first suspension and it seems quite bizzare.

The Australian cricket team had a perfect opportunity to improve their tarnished reputation for sportsmanship, by withdrawing their appeal against Jason Roy who was obviously not out. They blew it,even though the game was just about gone. A call back would have been good for cricket but just as important for Australia's image.
