Pies stun Eagles in thrilling grand final rematch

By Justin Chadwick / Wire

Collingwood have revived their top-two hopes with a pulsating one-point AFL win over West Coast in an epic grand final re-match at Optus Stadium.

The Magpies lost defender Darcy Moore to a hamstring injury in the opening term, and trailed by 18 points at the 10-minute mark of the third quarter of Friday night’s blockbuster.

Collingwood turned the match on its head from that point on, keeping West Coast scoreless for the next 43 minutes.

Final-quarter goals to Brody Mihocek and Jordan De Goey got the Magpies back to within one point, and Collingwood hit the lead with a series of behinds.

West Coast forward Jack Darling had the chance to put his side ahead with two minutes to go, but his 50m set shot from the boundary line didn’t register a score.

Collingwood’s 11.12 (78) to 12.5 (77) win saw them leapfrog West Coast into second spot on percentage, with both sides boasting 11-5 records.

The Magpies, who had entered the match off two straight losses, would have slipped two games adrift of second spot if they had lost to the Eagles.

Collingwood won the inside 50m count 20-5 in a final-quarter onslaught.

Mihocek booted four goals and took 10 marks in a stand out performance, with five of his marks contested.

Mason Cox kicked three goals, and could have had more if not for some simple dropped marks.

Adam Treloar tallied 39 disposals and seven clearances.

The ruck battle between Nic Naitanui and Brodie Grundy made for intriguing viewing.

Both players had their moments, with Naitanui dominant early, and Grundy influential late.

Naitanui finished with 14 disposals, 28 hitouts and 11 clearances, while Grundy had 22 possessions, 31 hitouts and six clearances.

Both sides suffered an injury blow in the opening term.

Moore injured his left hamstring, while Jamie Cripps damaged a groin while unleashing a snap.

The injury to Moore is particularly worrying given his recent history of soft tissue problems.

Magpies skipper Scott Pendlebury (finger) and James Aish (shoulder) finished the game with injury concerns.

Eagles goalsneak Jarrod Cameron booted four first-half goals, but he was kept quiet in the second half by debutant John Noble.

The opening term featured six lead changes as both sides put an emphasis on attack.

Cameron booted three goals for the term, while Jack Darling nailed two courtesy of strong marks.

But the Magpies had plenty of firepower of their own, with Cox and Mihocek booting two goals apiece.

Cameron booted his fourth goal midway through the second term to help West Coast open up a 15-point lead.

Collingwood were able to hold in the third quarter when West Coast threatened to blow open the game.

And when Mihocek and De Goey booted a goal within a minute of each other in the final term, the margin was just one point but the Magpies had all the momentum.

Clearly you don’t rate Hurn then Doc. His job was purely negative to stop Hurn which he did. If you rate players purely on possession you know nothing about the game .

Mayne was officially the worst player on the field.

If we keep our mojo when we kept the Eagles scoreless for 45 minutes they can’t beat us. Maynard to renew acquaintances with Toby Greene should be interesting. Do they pick Keefe again?

I seen today Scotty might be playing mate. Channeling his inner Pants. It's only a finger, so he can strap it up, and as the bald headed flog says "PLAY ON!!" What's the worst that can happen? He can't pick his nose on Monday? Re the midfielders on top, we didn't look it mate. It's like the end of the game crept up on us. When Betty kicked that point, aside from the Darling kick, time just disappeared, and before I knew it, Betty and Ryan were running for a ball in the pocket with five seconds left, and it suddenly dawned on me we'd win lol! It felt like the reverse of the grand final Petey. We pinched it hardcore. What would you say we have to do to beat the Giants? They have lost Coniglio and Kelly apparently. Also apparently they are good players. I don't know that team well haha

Losing Cripps was a blow, his run-defence-goal assists, often pops up for a needed goal. But the derby drained us I suspect, a hard slog in the rain and wet-we ran out of legs in the last quarter. Was a game of centimetres and seconds! Could've gone either way. Credit to the Pies though, they did enough with tactics and determination to make it go their way - just.

I wouldn't be so hasty to write JK off yet? Besides when he's down or held, Darling tends to get off the chain, as happened. JK had a limited preseason/surgery, and gets hammered by the opp. every game. He'll come good.

Mihocek was unbelievable Crocky.Needs a contract fast ! I thought our midfield broke even first half but then won second half and really dominated last qtr. Eagles seemed tired last qtr. Its the first time in 5 games I thought our mids won. Adams back next week but Pendles out. Just can’t get them all out on the park together. Weirdly, they beat us at home and we scraped over them at home .

Thanks Petey. It's really weird because only our fourth win in Perth in thirty years against the eagles. They always have our measure, and after four in a row and the losses you mention, I was done half way through the third quarter. But I still can't understand how we can keep a full strength reigning premier, on their home deck, with the anti-dew spray causing our blokes to go ice skating instead of playing footy, to one behind in just under an hour of footy, and smash them in I50s and contested ball? We surely have to come up with the answer to all our problems? Maybe have Cox and Mihocek deep like Bucks did, and if one scatters the pack, the other will mark and goal?

Yeah The Hawthorn and North loss definitely questioned my hope for anything in 2019 Crocky. Not just that but even our wins weren’t convincing. This was a possibly season changing win. As a Pies fan you are pretty conditioned to torment. I wrote an article about it in the lead up to last years grand final perhaps as a premonition of more torture to come. https://www.theroar.com.au/2018/09/25/the-agony-and-ecstasy-of-a-54-year-old-collingwood-fan/

Petey! It’s been a while. What about my mate Betty Crocker? The winning behind a la Plugger PF 1996! Seriously though, I saw you in the forecast thread man. You were posting like a broken man. You been around a while, and you would have seen us win matches like that we should not have. The two losses were an abberation. Not that any team these days needs a spark, but this will be one. The grass looks greener now until the Crows game I reckon. But the Eagles flogged the Dockers the same as the Crows the Suns, so we can probably go to AO with confidence. Magpies might win all our interstate games this year eh? Even though we never leave the MCG….

Nic Nat has a tummy Doc, too good to play twos to get fitter but can’t go a whole game...it is a dilemma for coaching to manage.

Thought it wasn’t govs best game Gerry but that the key move was Mayne on Hurn as defensive forward. Very disciplined player Mayne, deserves a contract extension.

Mattician and I were more optimistic than PtS about the Pies' chances... Lots of fine line decisions in the game. McGovern was filthy after the game that they'd let the Pies score too freely in the first quarter. One more mark paid to Allen or stuck by Cox. Mihocek falling over and getting a free. Two more minutes of Naitanui, who was Grundy's equal or better head-to-head. No holding free against Kennedy to Pendlebury. One fewer bad kick from Crocker or Masten. Better accuracy by the Pies. Cripps on board all game at least the equivalent of Moore. No boundary ump in the way of Allen who was about to gather. Good game all round, Pies just good enough,Eagles just bad enough.

If this match had depended on us getting a home final, I am sure it would have ended differently. Fine margins indeed. Darling should have centred the last kick. So many moments of shoulda woulda coulda. All credit to the pies for their strength in last quarter. They are a quality side. To be victors by 1 point is something special, especially away from home. What happened to defence in last quarter? It’s full of quality players, questions need to be asked. We want to be so much better to get over Richmond.

Blowing your own trumpet as always JB, down all year and has 30 goals to his name and is averaging 2-3 per game which is his career average. Your inability to connect dots has been down all year. Stick to Freo and Ross ok mate

Eagles stopped playing after opening up that 18 point lead but in a matchup between two fairly evenly matched clubs, you cannot expect the same team to always win. The Magpies were due a win. They could have given up with that large deficit but instead turned it on and are back init for a top two finish.

Mihocek is quite underrated. He is possibly our next most important forward after De Goey and Stephenson. Works hard up the ground too.
