Rodney Eade offers solution to Gold Coast's horror plight

By Ed Jackson / Wire

Ex-Gold Coast coach Rodney Eade believes the Suns must trade any high draft picks they obtain in the next few years to add experience to their young AFL list.

Gold Coast must use a likely AFL No.1 draft pick this year as trade bait to add experienced players in their prime to their squad.

That’s the view of ex-Suns coach Rodney Eade who believes the club’s over-emphasis on unproven young players is hurting their progression.

The Suns have slumped to last on the ladder following back-to-back hammerings at home against Richmond and Adelaide, with their losing streak in 2019 now extending to 12 matches.

Suns coach Stuart Dew said after Saturday’s humiliating 95-point shellacking by the Crows he needed to make changes to his team, but admitted there’s not many of his reserves banging down the door.

Eade says the Suns list lacks proven talent in their mid-20s and the club needs to use its draft picks – and a priority pick it has indicated it will seek from the AFL – to lure those kinds of players to the Gold Coast.

“They’ve gone all youth and their experienced players are probably depth players from other clubs who’ve all been in and out of the side as well,” Eade told RSN on Monday.

“I don’t think priority picks as such will help them. I think they need to get some experienced players.

“The best way would be to get the No.1 pick but they must trade it. There’ll be teams clamouring for that.”

Eade says the Suns and GWS both have to pay above the market to retain and recruit players and would also like to see the league grant Gold Coast salary cap relief.

“You need to get a 24-25 year-old with some talent and sell it to that player,” Eade said.

“He’d probably get paid above the odds too but say ‘we’re going to do the same next year’.

“So the next two or three years we get the first pick but we must trade it so there’s going to be some other talent coming in.”

not Worpel, they will build around him Shiels and Smith. And one more - Breust? they really need to find their Hodge. but they don't grow on trees. Dew has his Sydney connections to draw on. Josh Kennedy?

There's some good suggestions there PF, but BFS is right, Chol and Stack are off the market. Im sure Clarko would let Roughy and Burgoyne go for leadership roles if they wanted to, but thats probably only going to be one season at best. You still need to target the mid level 24-25 yos and get some real improvement showing, before you start to land some big fish. Managed & sold the right way the Gold Coast could be a destination place for the right type of personality but its gonna take some smarts and some early runs on the board to do it. Also definitely good suggestion to temporarily increase their cap and possibly one or two extra on the list rather than just handing over a priority pick.

In the true character of the gold coast a total revamp is necessary. Every big name player that is being let go a year to early must play for the gold coast. The whole team should be a theme park based team of retirees and past it players. Who would have played in the last few years. Sam Mitchell. Stevie J, Help me out here….. This is a franchise for the aged but willing. Luke Hodge, let Buddy go there. It’s a place for retirees so it’s a fit. What we need is a catchy title so the marketing Boffins don’t call them the ;Fathers and Sons. It would create it’s own competitive culture and give the place the VEGAS and novelty aspect it needs. It’s silly enough to work and probably breaks every rule in the book.

Chol and Stack are not going anywhere. They will be in a premiership winning side. Stack will win the rising star, and possibly the Norm Smith.

The only way that there is going to be swift change in the age profile of the club is to trade a high draft pick for two or three high class players that are also good citizens. Trading this year number one draft pick for 25/26 year olds might be allow the Suns to be competitive while their talented draft picks mature. For example would Hawthorn trade Shiels, Worpel and Smith for the number one pick?

Just think it's ironic Eade offering words of wisdom about the Suns after he failed dysmally.

TWAS, I think they tried that a little bit this year with the Horlin-Smith's, Ellis types..... They certainly don't help themselves with decisions like letting Jarryd Lyon's go. Exactly the type of player they need. Yet they were happy to delist him end of last year when the Lions started sniffing around?

You know Eade was a coach and not a selector don't you? His point is valid - and just about everyone is saying the same thing. There is certainly talent at the Suns, but it's all young and inexperienced. I wouldn't be chasing any superstars - as others have pointed out they wouldn't go to the Suns anyway. But if you could recruit half a dozen decent mid-level players with 100-150 games under their belt as a minimum, that would give the young Suns some hard bodies around them to learn from.

Gold Coast need to go for players I'd be ringing up Shaun Burgoyne right now Roughy Anybody They need players coming up Players need to go up there Brayden Sier he'd be great up there Fletcher Roberts at the western bulldogs he is a prime recruit Sam Gray he'd be great up there Maboir Chol is he from Queensland? Tipungwuti he'd add spark They need to sell the club to players They need to take risks with trade recruits they got young talent, not everythings going to always work out, look at eagles with flyin ryan, rioli there was questions whether they were up to afl standard, Sydney Stack, imagine if gold coast had sydney stack. Nakia Cockatoo would be good Target experience over youth, they have a great young list very talented and good, Lukosius needs help up forward, he would go up another level if he had Roughy there. Lets not forget they are missing Rankine who would probably be leading the rising star and the goalkicking if he was there, he's had a disasterous run with injuries. Play him as soon as he is fit.

The AFL probably should have stepped in last year before they lost their best two players, bit late shutting the barn door now. Maybe subsidise salaries for their trade ins by a 25% top up for 2 seasons so at least anyone willing to come gets decent money. Those SA draft kids from this year will likely end up like Brisbane's 'go home 5' unless they get some support.

I can't help but feel that draft picks are a bit of a poisoned chalice to an extent. There's essentially a consensus number 1 driven by the media before the draft and it would take a brave team to pick otherwise, make the media look foolish and then have it thrown back in their face every time it doesn't seem like a perfect choice. There's also the fact that the type of player that is at number 1 may not be what the team needs so you can end up adding to a poorly composed squad. Where as down the order there's less analysis and teams can really select what they want.

Thanks Rodney. You got 16 wins in three seasons and now offer your words of wisdom to help sort them out? Please…the truth is two of your players ended up at suburban football club Balwyn in the EFL and dishonoured their contract as they didn’t want to play under you. You then took perennial finalist Balwyn out of the finals for the first time in 15 years in your first season. Don’t know why listening to this? Pick 1 would have to be a superstar. Who for some reasons wants to go there, now. And if he goes alone, continue to suffer Better to try and get 4-5 a-minus talents in I reckon. Prestia types, going the other way. Adding on to Miles and Ellis etc I mean, how much can difference can one player make? So it would be pick one for two players and then their next pick for two more Preferably from same club. Who can afford to lose them Surely the Giants are best placed with Nick Haynes types by the dozen? Candidates: Parker Heeney

Nobody would of thought a couple of guns like Neale and Cameron would pick Brisbane.

It's a great idea in theory.... But GUN in his prime player would choose to head to the Gold Coast? Anyone of this nature would more likely just go up the Road to the Lions......
