Who's in - or out - of Ashes contention following the World Cup?

By The Roar / Editor

Australia may have succumbed to England – who went on to win the Cricket World Cup – in the semi-finals, but we all know the whole tournament was just a warmup for The Ashes, right?

With the most storied series in Cricket history set to write a new chapter in just a few short weeks’ time, the World Cup actually served as an important audition period for several players ahead of the five-Test series.

So, who put their hands up for an Ashes gig? Who threw their spot away?

The Cricket World Cup special episode of Game of Codes saw Roar NRL expert Glenn Mitchell hop on to have a look at how Australia’s World Cup campaign should really be rated, as well as which players have put their hands up for an Ashes gig.

Listen to the discussion:

This year’s Ashes series will be the first international Test matches Steve Smith and David Warner have played since they were suspended during last year’s tour of South Africa.

Their spots are assured ahead of the all-important fixture, but who will be joining them?

Harris, Warner, Khawaja (hamstring query – is it possible to play all three keepers if Kh is out), Smith, Head, Carey, Paine/Wade (injured yesterday extent unknown), Pattinson, Cummins, Starc/Hazelwood depending on pitch/left right combinations, Lyon, 12th man J.Richardson (unlucky with injury)

Am I missing something where did Stones play that well , especially against england in the semi final . I like him in big bash and t20 and has done well in one day matches as well but his form doesn't merit a test call up really . Carey has been more consistent with the bat. I suppose the question is who is our best all rounder for certain pitches in the tests perhaps?

Stoinis in for sure. Shown he has adapted extremely well to the English conditions.

Hi DaveJ. ODI form should affect Ashes, but from history that is how it will go. Players going places on T20 form to ODI and ODI to test. Shield has meant little for years. And went into this WC with nothing near Eng’s yearly roster. It shouldn’t but it will have some carryover.

Are you seriously asking whether World Cup form should affect Ashes selection? If you understand anything about cricket, you’ll know it should matter very little. Some will say that Stoinis will no longer be in the running but he shouldn’t have been in the running anyway. They may say the same about Maxwell, but his World Cup batting is irrelevant. Who else, Finch? Dont even think about it . Behrendorff hasn’t played first class cricket for nearly two years, so no form line there. Carey’s batting possibly confirms he is worth a look at as backup keeper, but that’s it.

I think the Richardson injury played a huge role in the world cup. I don’t know what burns has to do to keep his spot.
