Why it's time for both Shaw and Teague to get the full-time gig

By The Roar / Editor

It’s been over a month now for the newest coaches on the AFL block in Rhyce Shaw and David Teague – have they done enough to secure themselves the full-time gigs for 2020 and beyond?

We got Roar AFL expert Marnie Cohen on the Game of Codes podcast and we all agreed – it’s time for the respective clubs to make both caretakers an offer.

Listen to the discussion:

Both coaches have enjoyed stunning turnarounds since taking the reigns and, with the season coming to a close, both coaches have proved they can handle it at this level.

Rhyce Shaw has tightened North Melbourne up on the defensive side of the ball superbly. They’re averaging ten more tackles per game under Shaw than they did under Brad Scott this season, while conceding a whopping 23 fewer points per game too.

That’s not to mention the fact they’re 4-2 under the premiership Swan, compared to 3-7 under Scott.

Over at Lygon Street, the Blues have won three of Teague’s five matches in charge – with the two losses coming by under a goal.

They’re averaging six more inside 50s and 20 more points per game under the caretaker too.

Who do you think is the more likely to put pen to paper this offseason? Which other coaching candidates stand out if either club elects to go external?

Phillip Burgess. Can’t you see how these guys have lifted and responded? Given different roles and a game plan to suit their list. Shaw has been there all year and already has a lot of knowledge on the players. Experienced coaches shifting clubs have not been overly successful except for one or two exceptions North will be making a massive mistake not signing Shaw

Just many overrated people. Shaw and Teague taking over making their teams immediately much better proves that. We'll see how Rossy goes.

How about Bucks Anon? He comes out of contract next year. I recall you asking when we last beat the Eagles? Last Friday champ.

Roos is smelling some sweet cash. He squawks about not being interested in coaching until the smell of sweet dollars tempts him. As a mentor, he gets the sweet cash with no real responsibility which is the way he likes it IMO.

Where to for Bolton now?

It's not long any club whatsoever are going to poach Teague. Carlton are in the box seat unless they actually want a Brad Scott, in which case they are probably moving on him already behind the scenes.

Col - I am happy for the blues to go with someone other than Teague but I can't see a standout candidate available and Teague has the blues playing the style of footy I want them to. Throw in that he out coached Longmire on the weekend by a considerable margin and has been able to orchestrate numerous comebacks through savvy changes (plus the players seem to love him) I think he will be hard to beat.

You are correct Mattician. We are definitely playing better football but have been 5 - 6 goals down in 4 of the 5 games he has coached. We beat a Brisbane who were not playing their best at the time, Fremantle who have rapidly gone backwards the past 4 games and Sydney who are now in a rebuilding phase without Franklin and playing a makeshift ruckman. We still lost to lowly Melbourne and the Bulldogs who we easily beat earlier. A lot of Carlton supporters are getting carried away with Teague and want the club to sign him now. There is no rush to do that and we will get a better idea of what he can do against Adelaide, West Coast, Richmond and Geelong.

Correct about Docherty but I think if he gets a full preseason he is the type of player that wouldn’t take too long to get back to near his best.

Carlton don't need Roos. Roos took all year to win 4 games at Melbourne. Teague has won 3 in 5 games.

How about just back the guy in rather than have him under the watch of Roos in an airy fairy mentor role where Roos takes all the credit and none of the blame. It just undermines the guy who is ultimately responsible. Teague has to do it his way.

Absolutely col, atm due to circumstances of time the gameplan of Teague isn't one I see standing up to a full season, in the interview stage the board will be able to pick his brains over how he would counter the gameplans of the top teams.

Yes Col, plenty to like about the Blues. Only thing I would say to the Blue supporters.... Be patient with Docherty. Two season's out. He's coming from a fair way back. If you think your going to get pre-injuiry Docherty straight up you likely to be very disappointed. But I agree with overall consenus of some sigificant improvement is going to happen very quickly.

Dingo, hopefully with Docherty right to go next year, another pre season into the 18 - 21 year olds, Mc Govern with better fitness levels, pick up an experienced midfielder & a goal kicking small forward I think a coach has a lot of positives to work with. Whether that’s Teague or someone else I think the Blues can certainly climb up the ladder.

It just goes to show how many overrated and incompetent coaches are out there that completely inexperienced assistants can get better results than guys that have coached for a decade or half a decade. Also, shows just how bad CEOs and Boards are at selecting the right person for the job. What a shambolic industry footy is.

I'd be happy with Teague as long as he has some experienced assistants around him. Paul Roos in a mentor/cultural role would be perfect in my opinion.

I like the way Teague is letting Carlton play an aggressive brand. However I think whoever followed Bolton was always going to see an immediate spike. His system was clearly way too complicated. Carlton had so many weapons that just weren’t getting opportunity to express themselves. I can’t wait for Charlie to come back into this team now. There is no reason why Carlton can’t do a Brisbane next year. Especially now they’ve got a coach who seems to have a desire to take the game on.

Why do Carlton need to make an offer to Teague now? Surely the club needs to do due diligence in making one of the most important decisions the club has faced in years. Teague has done a great job and should be considered along with whoever else applies. We still have 6 games to play and four of them are against top 8 sides. Let’s see how we go against them first.
