Josh McGuire cops 3-4 week ban for alleged eye gouge

By Scott Bailey / Wire

Josh McGuire’s NRL season could be over after the league came down hard on the North Queensland prop for a third contrary conduct offence this year.

McGuire has been hit with a grade-two charge for working over the face of Brisbane forward David Fifita in Thursday night’s loss to the Broncos.

He could normally escape with a one-match ban with an early guilty plea, but the 29-year-old’s poor record this season means he is facing up to four weeks.

McGuire has twice previously been charged this year for facials.

He earned the ire of Queensland teammate Cameron Muster in round five against Melbourne, amid initial suggestions of an eye gouge.

At the time the NRL revealed obscured camera angles prevented them levelling a charge above a grade-one contrary conduct.

The Queensland forward was again in the headlines against Manly in round 13, where he smothered the face of Dylan Walker.

On that occasion no eye-gouging accusation was made by Walker, and McGuire was again hit with a heavy fine for a contrary conduct charge.

The latest charge for Thursday’s incident is again for a facial and not a gouge, but the issue is considered more serious as it comes with a heavier grade.

If McGuire takes an early guilty plea he will miss three matches, but if he fights it at the judiciary and loses his ban will be four games and his season over.

Former club and representative teammates Darren Lockyer and Billy Slater had earlier criticised McGuire’s actions on Thursday night.

“He’s got priors. He’s always been this way inclined Josh McGuire,” Lockyer told Channel Nine.

“I think it’s just a bit of a facial. This is the third time this year he has been in a bit of strife for hands on the face. He might miss a game for that.”

Slater questioned why he felt the need to put his hand anywhere near Fifta’s face given his recent record and reputation.

“It was totally unnecessary. He didn’t need to put his hand anywhere near the face,” Slater added.

“And if you’re Josh McGuire even more so you don’t put the hand anywhere near the face.”

Cowboys coach Paul Green has previously defended McGuire this year, as he claimed the forward had copped “a bad rap” for his aggressive style of football.

What I don’t get is why Josh McGuire would even think about doing “facials” or eye gouging given his own personal circumstances. McGuire is legally blind in one eye as a result of an accidental poke in the eye from a teammate. https://www.playersvoice.com.au/josh-mcguire-the-day-i-lost-my-eye/ You would think, he of all people, would be acutely aware of the dangers of fingers in eyes and stay right away from players faces. He got off lightly twice this season. Now that his team looks like losing him for a minimum of three games, perhaps his coach and/ or the Club officials will sit him down and read the riot act to him. McGuire is a very selfish person on so many levels.

I noticed this as well. The guy is a talented ball-runner, but doesn't have a whole lot of nuance to his defensive ability

This wasn’t his only incident in the match. Have a look at the penalty Lodge gives away about 8mins into the 2nd half, McGuire comes and joins in and has his fingers all over Lodge’s eyes. Now was it a gouge? Probably not, definitely not in the Burgess league, but there’s still no need for his fingers to be there

Or get a downgrade and play the next week.

I’d say “pull a Burgess” but McGuire plays for a QLD based club, he’ll be gone. Old Sammy B can get his downgraded after what 4 or 5 visits to the judiciary.

If this had of been any other player, there wouldn't have even been any video replay of his finger near the eye. I would not be surprised if the match telecast director wasn't told before the game to keep the cameras on McGuire, whenever he's involved in a tackle. I don't like the way McGuire plays the game but if I was him I would fight the charge.

Goose McGuire should have gotten 15 weeks for being a serial pest and a notorious grub. George Burgess deserved his lengthy suspension but McGuire has pulled this stunt a LOT more than the two offences that Gurgess has committed. If he he changed his last name to Burgess he probably would but looking at 12 weeks just for the name alone.

I had my say about McGuire earlier & reckon he's been hard done by on just this occasion but it's probably karma. On the crackdown on tackler's hitting playmakers late, was that penalty and placing Flegler on report for a soft bump, not late, on Clifford for real? If that had changed the course of the game, I'd have been livid. Mcguire's push on Milford after the post-half time siren field goal attempt was worse and the refs walked of laughing about it. By all means protect playmakers when appropriate but you're still entitled to tackle & bump them, Clifford's kick follow through brought him into contact with Flegler, not the other way around.

Josh McGuire is without doubt a grub but so is TPJ. Someone needs to tell him that smashing someone who is already held by 2 others is not tough. His late hits are borderline at best.

I think it comes under the Three Gropes and Your Out Policy the NRL just invented for Serial Offenders. Like the Refs they make it up as they go along. Maybe the penny will eventually drop for Josh - then again Stupid is as Stupid does

Watch the video really carefully. Fafita obviously grabs poor Josh by the arm and places his hand on his face (he is pinching the nerves that control the arm which are located just under the armpit and obscured from the camera. Fafita knows where the cameras are, he's not silly). He then viciously attacks Joshs fingers with his eye before the Moose can pull his hand away in shock and pain (check out his reaction to this unprovoked attack). I'm telling you it's a conspiracy designed to besmirch the good name of one of the NRL's brightest stars. #eyeswideopenformoose

Surely he's getting time for the previous offences because last night's effort looked like an incident you'd see every 10 minutes in the NRL. Of all players, you'd think Josh would understand the ramifications of an eye injury since he's playing half blind with a detached retina himself. Despite the Broncos struggles, I'm happy enough that they let McGuire go this season and thought Patrick Carrigan's efforts last night indicate he's going to lock down that vacant forward role left by Josh, he's now getting used to the physicality of the NRL and as a Qld origin U20 leader, he's going to make quick improvement. They look a better balance with Carrigan & Ofahengaue on the field so I'd use Pangai Jnr as a bench impact player for 40-50 minutes of quality & avoid burning him out like JT13 is at the cows. Shibisaki's hands still let him down in the NRL, don't like the way he carries the ball although last nights 'waterlogged' conditions worked against most players confidence in handling. Thought the floods had revisited Townsville. Never seen so many players on both sides take the pass when completely stationery, easy meat for defenders.

Hmmmm. Dare I say they would be looking to send a message if he gets 3-4 weeks. The Clayton’s approach to acting like they are consistent and strictly enforcing rules. Making up for a mistake early in the year.

He could go to the judiciary and claim it wasn't an eye gouge because Fafita had his eyes closed and the Judiciary could come back and exognerate him and charge Fafita with careless face and eye positioning and sit him for 3 games... Who knows, it's judiciary lottery..

Spot on Emcie. I don’t think there was any gouging but Moose should now have his hands nowhere near anyone’s face. I don’t think he ‘gouges’ to be honest but he loves the facial and it’s just not acceptable in this day and age. Keep your hands away from faces. It’s not that difficult surely.
