The best path towards NRL expansion

By SR1 / Roar Pro

Okay, okay, let me have one more go at this, and this time I promise it’ll be a more concise, clear and attractive idea for the future of the NRL.

In this plan one team will be axed, one relocated and two added.

Usually when people write these articles they always seem to look to the Sydney team stocks and then choose which to kill off or relocate. Instead it’s the Gold Coast Titans’ now 13-year unsuccessful history should come to a close.

Their crowd numbers are much below standard even though ridiculously cheap ticketing deals have been offered. They’ve also had problems with their finances as well as their on-field results, making the finals only three times. The Gold Coast is a place for holidays and enjoyment, not an NRL team.

The Titans can then be replaced by a new Queensland team with the potential and support to go much further and be more successful than the Titans have been. This side should come from the western corridor and Ipswich region of Brisbane. There is much support for the sport in that area as well as high levels of population growth projected for coming years.

Next we move to Sydney to attempt to slightly increase clubs’ markets for fans. The club that that should be moved away is the Sharks. The’re seemingly the obvious choice given their relatively small supporter base and poor crowds considering the area of Sydney they occupy in the south-east. The Sharks could become the Perth Sharks, playing at Optus Stadium or HBF Park. Relocation seems best here because it preserves the Sharks’ history, whereas preserving the Gold Coast isn’t as large a priority.

The Roosters would be prime candidates to go also, but they seem too influential in the competition given their recent results.

So without actually changing the number of the teams in the competition, we’ve already added two new locations to the league. Not bad, hey?

In 2022 the NRL look likely to add two more teams to the competition. We’ve already covered the two major candidates of Perth and Brisbane, so what next?

Sports opinion delivered daily

A team in Wellington would be great for the continual growth of New Zealand rugby league as well to provide the Warriors with a new rivalry. It would also hopefully provide competition to rugby in the country.

Although this may be a controversial selection, I believe the Cairns and Papua New Guinea bid thrown up last year was a great idea. Papua New Guinea has proven with their World Cup and Queensland Cup success that the people have great pride, belief and support in the sport. The other half of the bid, Cairns, has accommodated a host of sports in the past few years, including rugby league. I have no doubt the residents of Cairns would get behind their own team if it were based there.

And that isn’t all. The NRL can still add support without moving anyone anywhere.

In every draw the NRL would force every Sydney team to take two of their home games away to other venues that don’t get any rugby league. Every other non-Sydney team would be forced to take only one away, including even the Broncos. This makes a total of 26 games moved among the now 18 teams that would be spread tactically across venues unused by rugby league in the NRL.

Areas like Adelaide might be given more games than regional areas because of population differences. These, for example, could include Adelaide, Dunedin, Darwin, Hobart, Alice Springs as well as regional areas of New South Wales and Queensland. Of course this strategy could also be implemented before the expansion period in 2022.

Rule No 1 We must not force clubs to Relocate. They must volunteer themselves. Rule No 2 We must add teams to population Growth areas that will create supporters and members and lay claim to those areas before another code does Rule No 3 We must establish Teams in areas with a high population that already support League to cement ownership of the area.. see Queensland Rule No 4 We must do all this as soon as possible and not be restricted by any TV Deal timings So 2 extra Teams in Queensland, One in Central Coast, One in Wellington NZ. Australians are not really interested in seeing NZ club teams playing (see Netball). so we either get rid of Auckland or go all the way in helping NZ League grow. A Wellington Team is the natural next step because of the rivalry. Sio we get these Teams going and we work out ways to help them prosper. Later on we look at Perth. We get players from UK, Polynesia and new programs located near traditional Rugby Union Schools. We look at 2 conference system or a one round system with separate Premiership & Plate finals.

Move Sydney “self proclaimed” roosters No juniors, No catchment, No crowds, No soul, just money, in paper bags or under sombreros, they’ll be better in Adelaide with a city all to themselves, same colors as the past Rams incarnation, and the biggest upsides of them all, no one will miss them in sydney as there won’t be a void in territory regarding catchments, (like north sydney’s void) and having a current successful team relocated will and should be greeted with open arms, in comparison to shifting a struggling team, Plus Allianz stadium rebuild can stop, so the government can concentrate on hombush/ANZ instead. seriously who else will be playing there, atleast bankwest has tigers and eels, Anz has souths and dogs, Allianz? Just roosters ….please give me my tax money back, NSWgovernment!. Ticks all the boxes, and its a no brainer, Roosters off to Adelaide, enter Perth Pirates, and Redcliffe Dolphins, Dragons more in wollongong, Manly more in Christchurch, Sharks more in Fiji, Panthers more at Bathurst, Titans more in Suncorp, eels more in NT, Souths more at gosford, spread the game around Australia, not every team needs 12 games in their home stadium, 8 minimum, 4 home games to random stadiums away

Manly is the perfect club for a patt-relocation. I say part, because i can see them playing Half in Sydney and Half in Brisbane. Manly Warringah can mege with Wynam Manly to create a new Many Sea Eagles club (Both clubs use sea eagles as their logo/mascot). In time, finances might pressure the club to take more games to QLD. If so, so biet, there will still be 7-9 games a year in Sydney. Judging by crowds and memberships, Manly appears to be the obvious choice. Taking into account the fact that Brisbane have a similar Cup team ready to merge, the opportunity is one i believe shouldn't be missed. Chances are they could get a 5-10m carrot off the NRL aswell.

LOL.... do you know how this sounds "The Gold Coast is a place for holidays and enjoyment, not an NRL team."... It's sounds like, your saying the NRL is not enjoyable.

Cairns+PNG??? What? Cairns is Cowboys country through and through. Good luck with that. Two scenarios will happen: either no one will be supporting that side south of the cape as they're already supporting the Cowboys; or it will attract supporters but majorly cannibalise the Cowboys' base. When the Cowboys were introduced, they were a novelty in and of itself. Everyone north of Rockhampton was onboard. There's no new fanbase to tap into there. And the Hunters idea is lovely in the QCup, we love it, but financially it can't survive anywhere past that. QRL is one thing, an NRL licence is another. And relocating a 13 year old club is terribly short-term thinking. There's so much potential for the Gold Coast to invest in the Ipswich corridor, Toowoomba and Northern NSW. All it needs is good management. What would have happened to young Brisbane juniors like Jai Arrow and AJ Brimson, who weren't quite good enough to graduate into the Broncos first team, but are now stars for the Titans? That's what you lose. What ever happened to ye olde Perth and Brisbane 2?

The Sharks are hardly afraid. They are in the process of receiving $40m from the developers.$15m towards their new leagues club adjoining a huge retail development. Debt monies repaid to the NRL.At least $18m in the bank, zero debt. The 2 years they are away from Shark Park for the development, all leagues club loss will be covered by the developer. The reason they can get on with building the whole show. A new Centre of Excellence is being incorporated and new stadium extensions planned to meet NRL requirements. A huge increase in junior numbers and indeed junior referees ,the latter in a Sunday Telegraph story today. Perhaps people should check the facts.

No matter which sport, I will never understand the mentality of people whose starting point is to kill off clubs.

Leave the sharks alone. Move Todd Greenberg, Peter Beattie and Graham Annersely and the leagues problems are solved.

Cause they suck on the field. The logic seems to be on field success = that locations ability to sustain an NRL team. So with that said, I say it's time the RL strong hold of Melbourne has 3 new teams added to the comp. I also believe that East Sydney isn't represented enough. With the success of the Roosters it's madness the NRL doesn't have a team in places like Coogee, Point Piper or Vaucluse.

Everyone is saying "get rid of Gold Coast". Why? They've got money in the bank and a strong base of local juniors. All they need is a proper coach. The thing is, when the previous Gold Coast team (the Chargers) were kicked out of the NRL they had money in the bank. If they were still around they could very well have a premiership by now, if not more. The teams that should really be afraid are Cronulla and Wests Tigers.

I don't think the League can pick and choose teams to remove or relocate because of the 'Souths experience' (including high-court precedence) plus the newish 'sink or swim' policy - which pretty much empowers the swimmers. To remove or relocate a team, I think they'd need: 1. For them to go totally bust 2. For them not to sell to private owners 3. For them not to have a ground-swell of fans and community, licensed club(s) and developments all striving to get their finances back in order. The NRL provides grants of $13M to each club (the salary cap is $9.6M). Also, Sydney clubs share $50M of state government grants towards centres of excellence. Add in gambling $ from leagues clubs, memberships, tickets, catering contracts, merchandise. And for the odd lucky club, $ from business or real estate developments, plus $ from governments to shift games away from home. Makes each of points 1 to 3 less likely to occur. So (in my opinion) , not much point in planning teams to remove or move. Unless there's major concrete info on going bust...

Hooray another article. Unfortunately these are becoming all the same. Before even reading it I guessed; 1. Kill / move the Sharks because everyone wants to kill / move the Sharks. 2. Add teams to areas that struggle to house one team now. 3. Add some other islands into the mix. 4. Add a second Brisbane Team. I was close, but exactly. Why are you picking on the Titans?? Sure they have hardly set the world on fire since joining, they are in a big hole at the moment and struggling, but they are still a fairly new team in the NRL and have performed better than Souths did after they rejoined. In fact they have actually faired better than Newcastle over the last 13 years, played as much finals footy as the Tigers, and have less spoons than the Eels, but you aren't going to relocate them are you?? Everyone seems to think the Sharks should go because they only represent the Shire, have smallish crowds (not really but whatever you need to justify) and nobody likes them. Thing is, they have been one of the more successful clubs since the introduction of the Titans in 2007, have a solid supporter base and their own home ground, have a large renovation project happening at said ground to make it more of a precinct. This is a club on the up up (pun intended) and you want to make them move to Perth?? Why not just create new teams if you want to expand?? Why alienate an entire section of the supporter base just to maybe pick up some others elsewhere?? Lastly would you rather play in front of 15000 in a suburban ground with a lot of atmosphere, or in front of 15000 in an 80000 seat stadium with as much atmosphere as the moon?? Adding PNG is not a great idea at all. Adding teams from any other country is not a good idea at all. We have already cracked the NZ wall so I get another team there. North and South Island rivalry could work, but the Warriors are not exactly setting the world on fire either. They have barely made the finals at all since the Titans joined in 2007, have poor crowds traditionally and can only be relied upon to be unreliable (depending on if you have the nerve to tip them that week). Sadly, this wasn't even entertaining.

If I was a Perth resident I would hate the idea of the Sharks being dumped in my city. The Sharks have no connection with Perth, I don't know if they have even played there. Relocation in my opinion won't work. I'd like to see a new team in Perth and another NZ team
