Newcastle are poised to part ways with coach Nathan Brown at the end of this NRL season after an underwhelming year, according to a report.
Newcastle are reportedly set to part ways with coach Nathan Brown at the end of this NRL season.
Despite reassurances in recent weeks from club hierarchy that Brown would lead the side in 2020, the Newcastle Herald is reporting he will exit the club.
The Knights have lost seven of their past nine games to sit in 10th spot despite a star-studded roster which was expected to be a finals contender.
Brown last year signed an open-ended performance-based contract with the club after lifting them off the bottom of the ladder, following three straight wooden spoon seasons, and into 11th spot.
The Knights, led by the likes of Kalyn Ponga, Mitchell Pearce and David Klemmer, looked like premiership contenders midway through the season.
Following their round 11 win over the Sydney Roosters, they found themselves in the top four.
But a recent six-game losing streak brought them back down to earth and appears to be the impetus behind Brown’s reported exit.

The Knights have had all types of coaches in their history including two of the best ever in Bennett and Warren Ryan plus the well performed Brian Smith but it was a Pommy in his first coaching spell in Australia and an ex Knights player in his first year coaching in the NRL who had the most success. Getting the right roster is the key issue and then team harmony and some luck with injuries and other factors comes next. Hagan had a pretty short career because like most coaches , he landed in the role at the right time and didn't do a lot wrong not because of his superior ability. The next coach could have pretty good timing.

I'd happily have them in kograh... Couldn't be worse than what we got now. Heck, I'd even take Green or Brown or any other coach named after a crayon for that matter.

toovey. if you want a coach who can play the under siege card, he's the man. He did a great job at manly and was probaly done over by the owners there. His record is pretty good, dealing with an messed up salary cap and following a pretty succesful coach.

Hang on, before we all get too carried away, we need to hear Newcastle say, ‘ Nathan has our full support.’ Then we know the trigger has been pulled.

He has a pretty abrasive temperament. Not surprised. There was an agreement in place that they could sack him any time or he could walk. It's still pretty obvious player power is strong at some club's. Easier to get rid of the coach than key players when you have that sort of agreement in place.
