Retiring Cowboy Matt Scott suffers stroke

By News / Wire

North Queensland forward Matt Scott remains in hospital after suffering a stroke on Sunday, with doctors confident he will make a full recovery.

Scott suffered a “mild stroke” on Sunday, the club said in a statement.

Scott stayed in Brisbane after reportedly feeling sick following the first leg of the team’s trip home after Saturday’s heavy defeat to Newcastle.

Set to retire after this season, 34-year-old Scott has played 268 NRL games over 16 seasons as well as 22 State of Origin games for Queensland and 22 Tests for Australia.

Doctors were confident the stroke was unrelated to football.

It is another blow in a tough year for coach Paul Green’s team, who sit 15th with just seven wins this season.

Scott’s setback follows a brain bleed to young talent Te Maire Martin and ruptured spleen to centre Justin O’Neill earlier this season.

He doesn't need to play another game. Health is more important. He can be paraded in front of the crowd, with the fans wishing him well. All the best Matt Scott.

Such awful news. Thumper is and always will be a Cowboys icon. He is one tough footy player who never took a backward step but played the game as it should be played. Get well soon big fella. You deserve to have a long and fruitful retirement in a good paddock.

A tough honest player who deserves respect and who has always proven to be several classes above teammate Josh McGuire. I wish the big fella a speedy recovery and although it would be a shame if he didn't get to finish his career playing out the final 3 games of the season he has to think of his own health and his family and the long life ahead of him. All the best champ and good luck for the future.

Get well Matt Scott. Geeepers this club has had a bad run. Brain bleeds, ruptured spleens, compound ankle fractures, Barba brain bursts, NFL Valnapping.... And now this. He should hang up the boots now.
