AFL All Australian squad: Who got snubbed and who's lucky to be there?

By The Roar / Editor

The AFL released their 40-man All Australian squad yesterday and, as it always does, it’s set tongues wagging.

Narrowing down the entirety of AFL superstardom to just a list of 40 names is always a controversial task but, with only nine of last year’s 22-man team being considered, this year has proven particularly interesting.

Who’s been snubbed the hardest by the selection committee? Who should feel very lucky to get a spot in the squad?

We got former AFL player turned commentator Tony Armstrong on the Game of Codes podcast, to talk the lucky inclusions and unlucky exclusions from this year’s All Australian crop.

Listen to the discussion:

Many eyebrows were raised at Essendon not having a single name on the list despite them making the finals, while the raw number of inside mids over outside mids has also been a talking point.

Tony Armstrong enjoyed a six-season career in the AFL, playing 35 games for Adelaide, Sydney and Collingwood.

Since retiring, he has since moved into commentary, becoming the first indigenous person to commentate an AFL game radio during Round 22’s Richmond-West Coast clash.

Visit our Game of Codes hub to catch the full episode and be sure to subscribe and review on iHeartRadio, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts or wherever else you’re listening.

Compare their disposal efficiency. It's a no brainer. Houli by the length of the straight.

Not being able to impress himself on the minds of selectors over the last few weeks certainly did not help his chances. Surely just one, maybe two, more outstanding, performances over these last four weeks would have learnt him a spot.

Yep. The selectors, like journos, can only remember one week back.

Snubbed is the most overused word in sports writing. Tabloid sh!te. Stop it. Also, Daniel Rich snubbed for half back flank spot.
