How Siddle and Marsh could both play at the Oval

By Pierro / Roar Rookie

The Australian selectors should be aware of the history of the Oval before selecting their side for the fifth Ashes Test.

First innings scores of 332, 353, 328, 481, 687 and 492 shows that the Oval is a flat batting pitch. Deeper bowling units – usually containing five options, including a bowling all-rounder – are always used.

England and Australia in the last ten-plus years always go in to the Oval Test match with four pace bowlers as well as a spinner. That combination has yielded wins nearly every time with the right balance for long bowling spells.

The team batting first has a distinct advantage and if the team bowling first doesn’t have five key bowlers, they are often in deep trouble. The problem gets worse when England bats second, as they often rack up a decent total over 300.

There is a three-day turnaround after Australia bowled the last innings in Manchester. The Australian bowling unit is also exposed, having bowled with three seamers and a potentially injured spinner for close to 200 overs in total at Old Trafford, with only a 42-over break. Nathan Lyon is suspected to have a lacerated finger or some issue with his hand at the very least.

Peter Siddle’s economy rate has been healthy enough at 2.71 but that is with some awful luck in the form of dropped catches off his bowling and near misses. His bowling average could be mid-20s quite easily. Siddle’s bowling in 2015 at the Oval – where he was brought in fresh – was crucial, taking six wickets.

Siddle’s batting average is 26 this series. He is the fourth best Australian batsman. Let’s also not forget his crucial first-innings 44 at Edgbaston to partner Steve Smith. That got Australia back in to the match alongside Smith’s amazing performance. It’s easy to forget what Siddle did in the first Test.

Now, the case for Mitch Marsh. The only place to play him is at Lord’s or the Oval based on his 2015 figures and English form lines of the past. There is quite a collection of fans and experts against him playing for Australia again, and outside of England, they have a point, given his dip in form and repeated chances at Test level.

However, we don’t have another all-rounder in the squad and Marsh took five wickets at the Oval in 2015 and key wickets at Lord’s in the same series – both flatter decks. He played poorly on the green tops up north in 2015 but flatter pitches with deeper bowling worked for him and Mitchell Starc. His form has not been so good since then, but this is the last Test match in England and conditions suit the all-rounder.

It is a tactic to rest and rotate the pace bowlers, and variation in the bowling works at the Oval time after time.

I am not confident of what to expect with Marsh’s batting but I’m sure he could contribute on a flat deck despite his recent statistics. He could be worth a shot considering only two Australian batsmen have average above 27 this tour.

We also need bowling depth at the Oval as well as batting depth. If we drop one or both openers, and if Lyon is not fit to play, we will need deeper bowling.

Lyon would be my first choice, of course, but Marnus Labuschagne, Travis Head and Steve Smith can spin the ball in a deep bowling line-up and Marsh may contribute on the flat deck of the Oval.

If we are to play Pat Cummins and Lyon is injured, there is a big case for both Siddle and Marsh to play in a deep bowling line-up. If England bat first and Starc is playing with shorter spells, the bowling is exposed on a flat wicket. Starc bowled well at the Oval in 2015 and 2013, but with deep bowling support. He is still fresh with only one match this tour.

If Usman Khawaja is brought in to open along side Labuschagne, it allows for two vital substitutions by dropping both openers. A batting order shuffle for this sole Test to win the Ashes may be invaluable. There is plenty of time to get the order and openers right back in Australia and beyond.

The Oval may allow the batsmen to shine. Head, Matt Wade and Marsh will get flat conditions to make bigger totals in the middle and Siddle is averaging fourth highest (26) with the bat. Labuschagne and Khawaja have been effectively opening anyway, coming in often in the first few overs.

James Pattinson isn’t far behind Siddle with his batting average and could play if they rest Cummins and Lyon is injured, forming a similar four-seamer and one all-rounder line-up with Labuschagne as back-up. It’s an option.

Siddle can bowl long spells but Marsh may offer some extra batting security and bowling depth and often takes a few key wickets in England if the bowlers tire. Oval scores are huge. The opening batsman haven’t made more than 13 this series in partnership.

The only other call is to recall Cameron Bancroft, who survives an average of 40 deliveries and provides a left and right-hand combination. Other options include bringing both Siddle and Pattinson in if they rest Cummins, but with deeper bowling, Cummins is more protected. Only he knows his own body but his speed dropped off a bit in the last Test.

We have four Tests to go on and the potential to strengthen the batting with a one-off order elevation, which is not really changing the team as Labuschagne, Smith and Khawaja have been effectively opening the batting. Australia can figure out the long-term opening solution when they return home.

This is the line-up I would choose at the Oval: Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Matt Wade, Mitch Marsh (if Nathan Lyon is injured), Tim Paine, Peter Siddle, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins (or James Pattinson if Cummins is rested) and Josh Hazlewood.

That's not a valid reason to pick a player in the top 6. And sure enough we have another dismal display with the bat (not that it was Marsh's fault, but taking a batsman out of a weak batting lineup is ridiculous). But lucky the bowlers got a rest in the first innings right.

Also batting first would have protected us from batting last an rested those bowlers a bit more who tired understandably because they were backed up. Selectors and captain just making our job much harder this test for me as we need a 100 run lead on this pitch . Marsh is the only call I agreed with them on in theory just for this test too.

Anything but the Warner-Harris combo about sums it up! Hell, Paine could have opened. A gritty 20 off 50 would have been streets ahead of what those two have been delivering.

Yes. I think most wouldn’t go Siddle. I have to agree with Ronan that if they are playing Marsh they don’t really need Siddle. Better off going with someone more dynamic like Starc or Pattinson. And that’s even before how poorly he bowled here. I’m assuming you mean never bowl at the oval. If they had a more reliable batting lineup it could have worked for them. Getting England out for under 300, despite a sloppy fielding performance. This should be the best batting conditions where they should be able to pile on a big score, but we need some guys to hang with Smith and build a score to do that. They really want at least 400 here you have to think. That’s still possible, but it will require another Smith double and some others to hang with him well now.

Marnus spot is definitely number 3. Its just crises mode at the top in england we had to reshuffle for marsh or a fifth to come in for me but also fair is fair on the best series averages here, you go with your strongest in england by the fifth test they should know better for me. Will be ok in Australia I suspect and they have a few others to call on mid series down there if it continues but Im not worried about it on home drop in pitches so much. I think my starting line up would be taken by most now outside of siddle . you never bat first at the oval never

Yeah, they were saying for Warner it’s like s record number of single figure scores in a test series. I expect because people don’t usually get that many chances if they keep failing. I suspect they just don’t want to move Marnus from #3. Feel like that’s is his spot and they want to make it his own. Plus there has clearly been the ongoing thought that eventually Warner would get through and play a match winning innings, so they wanted to keep trying and hoping for that. But I do think Warner was dropped by just about everybody other than the selectors.

The only reason we won’t be batting day 5 is the inept openers for me. Thanks to paine putting england in , it gets tricky batting last if we don’t have a 100 run lead. We just have to hold tight now and see if the middle order can support smith and rack up some sort of lead. We are behind in the match now as it stands and largely due to two simple decisions for me : openers and batting first. Our three key bowlers, def tired (lyon maybe injured) yesterday off the back of the 200 overs last test , bowling three days merely 3 days before this one

Time will tell regarding what we can score here. I don't think there will be batting on day 5, so I guess the question is if we are batting late day 3 or on day 4, should it be that difficult to bat on?

Sadly marsh is put under pressure due to the openers, it was my whole point on how to get him in with deeper batting , I’ve been on the money on this one …annoyingly. Labs was a bit unlucky to nearly have his wrist broken it rattled him I think it was an awful blow to the wrist. This is another lets anchor steve smith match. Sadly now paine sent us in we are batting fourth. I can’t tell you how silly it was in reality at a deck like the oval. Hopefully we can get out of this but the selectors and paine batting first put us under immense pressure. Marsh already justified his selection as bowler , I’m now hoping he just makes some runs too and wade as well. Its a good deck for making runs as labs smith root and butler have demonstrated. Its still a 400 pitch for me

Labs fine with new ball, the two guys have opened with effect yet again in england plus khawaja would have opened in one slot. Anyway I didn’t want to be right on this one , but I’m thinking nearly everyone would take my starting side now outside of siddle for starc although the poor guy has been so unlucky with six dropped catches off his bowling. the great question mark on the bowling is around lyon why start him for four overs. Hopefully he is ok for the second innings . Some real selection blunders outside of marsh and the five bowler theory

Geez I hope Marsh can score some runs here. I'm worried though in his ability to keep the yorker out. He tends to get the bat down quite late.

No, I still don't think changing the order is the right way to go. On a stats analysis basis yes, but unnecessarily exposing our 3 and 4 (Lab and Smith) to the new ball is playing with fire. Yes they have ended up coming in early anyway, but I don't think you want to make it a given by shifting the order up one.

Mike on top of marsh, can I now change you on openers, yet again its labs opening with smith , was so obvious , shame I would love them to succeed but the order reshuffle totally validated to get khawaja in and keep head . England as usual requires the form batsman on english soil. Australian side could have gone back to normal in australia so easily

Pete sadly warner didn't go out , just mind boggling to keep him in on an average of 9, harris too for me. Once again put us under immense pressure

Hi paul once again averages haven't applied in this series , the openers had to go for labs and khawaja to open , hands in the head over it for the australian team more than anything

General in with our openers labs and smith yet again. Just have my hands on my head how they wouldn't open with labs and khawaja and keep head in. When you look back it only would have taken two changes drop the openers which was my logic and get marsh and khawaja in. Siddle been the more disappointing one for starc but one innings to go .

pakistan, marsh as I said was a dukes ball go to at the oval per his 2015 form with the ball, not so much the bat and his lead up english form. Its just clear he goes well at lords and oval with the dukes ball
