Broncos promise review after record loss

By News / Wire

Brisbane have promised to undertake a top-to-toe review after suffering their worst ever NRL loss in their embarrassing 58-0 flogging to Parramatta.

As the Broncos tumbled out of the finals at Bankwest Stadium on Sunday afternoon, so did a host of unwanted records for the six-time premiers.

The result was not only the biggest loss in finals history – eclipsing Newtown’s 55-7 defeat of St George in 1944 – it was also the proud club’s worst ever defeat, shading their 56-0 losst to Canberra in 2009.

The club’s premiership drought is now in its 13th year, the longest in their 31-year history.

Asked about his post-game message to his players, Broncos coach Anthony Seibold said: “See ya Wednesday morning,” in what was a reference to their upcoming player reviews.

Seibold refused to mince his words, promising to take the blame for the loss.

“I’m just really disappointed, embarrassed,” Seibold said.

“I can’t toss up any excuses, I’ll wear it. I’m the coach of the club so I’ll take responsibility.

“It’s also my job to fix that. I’ll have a good look at things because in big games, that’s where the Broncos are at at the moment.”

After taking over from Wayne Bennett less than 12 months ago, Seibold conceded his side were “a million miles away” from where he expected them to be.

“We want to win, we’re not here to make up the numbers and come eighth every year,” Seibold said.

“There’s a lot of good young men in there who are winners.

“You want good people who work hard who want to win. It’s my responsibility to fix that.

“It’s going to be a long pre-season, a long off-season.

“I’m embarrassed, surely the players are embarrassed. They’ll have to take some responsibility for what they dished up today.”

The Broncos have been highly criticised for their lack of a genuine halves combination after hooker-cum-halfback Jake Turpin and fullback-turned-five-eighth Darius Boyd were asked to steer the side around in the back third of the season.

Sean O’Sullivan (knee) and Tom Dearden (ankle) weren’t available for the finals because of injury.

Seibold didn’t rule out going to the open market to fill holes in their roster, saying they would look at every aspect of their set up and playing group.

“Everything is on the table, I need to fix this,” Seibold said.

“In a big game under pressure we folded.”

Well ‘mushi’ that is not what I think! One think that is certainly missing and it was missing last year also from the Bunnies (especially at finals time) is that our boys have no ‘mongrel and intensity’ like I’ve seen from other sides in the top 4. The coach and staff are there to bring that focus and intensity out in their players, as most certainly, that is what was missing from our boys from the chooks game, as they have admitted in their team meeting and to the press. That is what I was disappointed in and dirty about their performance on last Friday as I know that they can do better and beat the chooks!

If it's so clear why can't you articulate it?

The assumption there Steveg is that players are in no way variable. According to the souths brains trust on here most teams are better off without a coach as very few can improve their players' performance.

That's great not sure what a single word had any relevance to support your comment that Wayne was laughing at the results from the weekend. But your comment kind of does clarify why you said that, you just don't understand things very well.

Cronk is ready for retirement and besides, he left Melbourne to be based in Sydney. What would possibly want him to take on a stink in Brisbane?

The option is not his to decide. It is based on the number of first grade gaes he plays next season. I believe the number he must play to trigger the extension is 15.

The side is quite different. Two players that immediately come to mind are Nikorima and McGuire. Both had an impact on the Broncos and how they played. Broncos also had issue at Hooker last season.

I was going to list all the long term memory items I can regurgitate, but it's simpler to just say that, respectfully, you are mistaken. Seibold's performance this year is so far beneath Bennett 2018 it is penguins to eagles.

He may stay, but there is no reason why he has to be selected by Seibold next season in the NRL. He can play out his contract in the Q Cup.

and Souths can thank the nrl for helping them steal rooster jr territory in the 30s. Most of the ‘Souths’ juniors should have been roosters juniors but oh well, I guess that’s what happens when Souths and the league administration are in kahoots.

That was when we were planning long term with Niko and Milf. Nico is gone now and who knows what they are planning with Milf. Good consistant performers in the QLD cup need to be given a serious look. Coates on the wing seems to be a given next year so Issako might be a fullback option

"dafboss" we do recall that but, the score last years was a bit more respectable lol 48-18 (30 diff) not 58 to zip! Surely the Broncos players didnt go backward that much, its virtually the same side? This has to do with the coach, the Broncos website has hardly mentioned anything about this loss? All they have is articles about their NRLW side. Not very good for their fans, as they are phoning ‘talkback shows’ and complaining about the low key attitude that the Broncos management have taken and about Seibold!

Extremely disappointed at result but really need to throw some money at some good halves. I'd get Milford at half and throw heaps at Maloney to stay. Good set of forwards who need a little bit of leadership.

Yes, true. Murphy is also killing it with the Falcons these days but couldn't get a look at Red Hill.

3 Qld teams won't make the GF. Neither will 8 Sydney clubs, maybe all of them. That's just embarrassing.

Sam Scarlet should be an option as well. Of course we just lost out probably the best of the lot in Sam Walker.

To follow the Manly example, wouldn't that mean getting the old coach back? Barrett and Brown are available for the Redfern faithful...

There are no good cheap halfbacks around. That’s why Penrith are punting millions on one they think might be their game manager for the next decade, including taking on his dad as the coach, just to ensure they grabbed one of those rarities of our game, a good half back. Time will tell if the move was a smart one or not ?
