Israel Folau set for rugby league comeback

By The Roar / Editor

Israel Folau could make a return to rugby league before the end of the year.

The former Wallabies star has set his sights on representing Tonga at international level in a series of Tests to be played against England and Australia later this year.

However, Folau’s return will need to be cleared by the Rugby League International Federation, who it is believed are likely to veto the move.

Folau previously played eight Tests for Australia in 2007-09, during a storied NRL career which saw him play 91 games for the Melbourne Storm and the Brisbane Broncos.

He had a brief stint with the GWS Giants in the AFL from 2011-12 before signing with the NSW Waratahs for the 2013 Super Rugby season.

Folau debuted for the Wallabies in that year and played in 62 Tests for Australia’s national side, scoring 32 tries.

His career came to an abrupt end earlier this year when he was sacked by Rugby Australia for repeatedly posting homophobic material to his social media accounts, contravening RA’s code of conduct.

He is currently in the midst of legal action against Rugby Australia.

Folau will be joined in the Tonga team by his brother, John, who was a part of the Waratahs squad in 2019.

“This is great news”, said Tonga coach Frank Endacott.

“These guys are great footballers and bring size, pace and skill to the team. They will make a huge impact in the team and provide exciting attack options all over the park.”

“This will be great boost to the internationals, and I cant wait to see the crowd support that this will generate from our famous Mate Ma’a Tonga supporters.”

Folau isn't paid an award rate. He is a high paid individual. He sells his profile to teams/organisations. You cannot sell that as his value, and then say he is a private person. It's not a private social media accounting. You can have a private instagram account. He has a publicly verified account, meaning he has contacted instagram to confirm he is Israel Folau, the professional rugby union player which is referrenced in his profile. It's hilarious you say people in a limited wage structure like the armed forces is a 24/7 job. But a professional athlete who negotiates well above award rates (about 15-20 times under the RUPA CBA) does not have 24/7 responsibilities for how they represent their employer. Hardly surprising from somebody who only popped up here after this Folau business came up.

You couldn't be more wrong. Folau isn't a member of the armed forces who are paid 24/7 and are held accountable for their actions at any time. He, like yourself, is a private individual with a contract.....just like you. He is entitled to a private life and to have opinions contrary to his employer....as are you and every other private individual. Your employer pays you to do a job and that is all they can sack you for. If Folau said his piece at a post match broadcast, his employer would be well within their rights. But he said his piece on his private social media account, in his own time, without referencing his employer. He has been victimised and for the simple reason you disagree with his opinion, you support his victimisation.

Is that because he is a homophobic twat that nobody else will employ him? Move on mick, he's just a disgruntled ex employee that got caught out. No one cares. Let him run his myopic church and you fund him

I'm sorry Offside but that reasoning is absolutely absurd. It is clear that the claim for $10 mil is an ambit claim. Let's look at the facts objectively: 1. The total value of his contract is $5.7 million. Izzy would have to prove that not only has he been prevented from earn this money (of which he has already been paid $1.4 mill) and that he has been prevented from taking up another contract (of a value of at least $4.3 mil) once this contract was due to expire in 2023 (when he is 34). That is simply ridiculous to argue. 2. A court will not award substantial damages in the case of speculative pure economic loss based of Izzy's opportunity cost. He would have to prove his actual loss based on his termination which would be the amount remaining unpaid on his contract. 3. The NRL and the ARLC are complete separate to RA. They have said Izzy fails their inclusion model. That has nothing to do with RA and everything to do with what Izzy did. The NRL and ARLC have the autonomy what they think is best for their game. After breaching his contract with RA in the exact way he said he wouldn't he has painted himself out to be untrustworthy. I'm not surprised if he can't even get a phone plan or gym membership the way he has carried on.

Transgender wasn't a thing in Biblical times. The only way you got a "sex change" was by being made into a eunch. The operation involved a couple of stones. There were men who were described as "effeminate" and the Bible spells out the consequences for them. It's similar to what it says about drunks, thieves, adulterer's, liars and homosexuals. I'm not aware of his transgender post. I don't follow his instagram account and I missed the media coverage of it. Which was the way anyone found out about any of his posts.

Isn't that what happened anyway? The world moves on, these Izzy articles get fewer and fewer comments, and he'll have to work hard to keep himself from being forgotten.

Last thing Tonga need is running scared Folau in defence. They could used Folau to go after a few bombs and score tries that way but its no use if your giving away heaps more points.
