Boks were unbeaten in 2020

'Grand Slam opportunity': Foster calls on All Blacks to deliver perfect record

It’s nice that you’re thinking outside the box but I don’t see any upside for anyone. The Chiefs aren’t going to recruit club rugby players from Randwick and they wouldn’t base themselves there. Why would a Tahs fan suddenly start supporting the Chiefs just because they rebrand as Randwick? How long would the Canes have to travel to play in Queensland Country? RA won’t buy into this either as they’ll still only have three teams.

The idea that Australia is a large market therefore there’s money to be made is the same mistake that rugby has made when looking at Japan and USA for years. Large markets are often competitive and we’ve seen that rugby struggles for broadcasters and sponsors.

More, not fewer, Australia-based Super Rugby teams are needed to save the game

It’s a very interesting point. One of the differences here is contrition. I assume that if a player assaulted someone and was let off without conviction because it would ruin his career, his club wouldn’t want to continue employing him if he showed no remorse or did it again.

Israel Folau and the governing bodies who are powerless to govern

The refs left standing are Barnes, Owens, and Garces. It obviously wasn’t going to be Barnes. If it was Garces, you’d have people complaining about the Lawes try in the last game. Or you’d have people complaining about the Boks game. Or pretty much about any ref when one team beats another.

All Blacks vs England will be one of the greatest rugby matches ever

I’m not sure we need a structured competition but there’s nothing stopping NZ/AU/JAP agreeing to annual one-off tests. They could have a shield or cup if they so please. Japan could visit NZ and/or Oz in June, the extra Bledisloe could be played in Japan and then NZ or Oz could stay on and play Japan on the way to Europe. If it’s too exhausting, that team can drop a game from the usual European tour. Start with an understanding that we’ll play each other more often then if it works, make it a real competition.

Regarding the Pacific Nations, there is already a competition that Japan won this year. They dropped out for a few years previously but the option is always there for them.

This notion of a combined Asia Pac team is flawed. Having a few guys from the Japan in a combined team is no more helpful to Japan than Sarries is to South Africa. Different coach, different players, different systems, different goals. The Pacific Islanders was a failure for those reasons according to everyone involved.

Japan should join Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands in an alliance

My understanding was that the host nation keeps the gate and covers costs but broadcast revenue is split isn’t it?

Japan should join Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands in an alliance

It changed years ago. I don’t have the data on hand but there was a year when SARU convinced Super Sport to pay the same for Currie Cup as it did for SR and RC, meaning they kept a bigger part of the pie. Then the rand fell apart. That was probably one of the reasons Japan was involved as the old cash cow was looking a little worn out.

Japan should join Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands in an alliance

Not just against NZ but against all comers, besides Connolly, who was only around for a year. Win rates were Eddie Jones (57%), Connolly (64%), Deans (58%), McKenzie (50%), Cheika (50%). Seems like an argument for picking non-Australian coaches if ever I saw one.

Andrew Hore gamed the Waratahs – but he's not to blame

This is the winning formula. Eventually the wc will only be, or maybe already is, broadcast by outlets that have a steaming option. If people don’t care to watch the second tier comp on tv it doesn’t matter as it won’t replace other content. If the games can’t cover costs, they can curtain raise for the tier one finals.

It basically becomes Pacific Nations plus Scotland, Argentina, Italy, Georgia. Could be interesting

How to make the pool stage mean more

You may need to change the resolution settings on your TV. It seemed pretty clear there was connection with the head and there were no arms used.

More World Cup fan angst to come as farcical Hodge suspension sinks in

Isn’t that what happened anyway? The world moves on, these Izzy articles get fewer and fewer comments, and he’ll have to work hard to keep himself from being forgotten.

Israel Folau set for rugby league comeback

I’m guessing it had more to do with the stockpiling of guns and abuse than their beliefs

Israel Folau set for rugby league comeback

RSA to beat NZ in the pool. Japan to beat Scotland. NZ get knocked out by the #1 team in the world. Japan, this time in front of their home crowd, knock out RSA. Therefore an all northern pair of semis – Ireland to beat Wales, Japan just don’t have what it takes to beat England, and Ireland win their first world cup.

In two years time, Joe Schmidt becomes the AB coach and becomes the first coach to win two world cups on the trot with two different teams.

Five potential upsets at the 2019 RWC

Here’s the 23 from the 2015 final. I’m struggling to find any current starting players that would make that team for sure. The current bench hooker – Coles or Taylor – would push out Mealamu and TJP beats TKB. Maybe a 2019 Moody is better than a young 2015 one. The bench props are hard to call. If Ioane was in form he’d make it but he’s not. If we make the final, maybe Retallick will be in form and better his 2015 self. The thrown together XV looks a lot like it did in 2007.

Ben Smith, Nehe Milner-Skudder, Conrad Smith, Ma’a Nonu, Julian Savea, Dan Carter, Aaron Smith, Kieran Read, Richie McCaw, Jerome Kaino, Sam Whitelock, Brodie Retallick, Owen Franks, Dane Coles, Joe Moody

Keven Mealamu, Ben Franks, Charlie Faumuina, Victor Vito, Sam Cane, Tawera Kerr-Barlow, Beauden Barrett, Sonny Bill Williams

All Blacks name imposing World Cup squad, complete with shock omissions

I remember saying exactly the same thing in 99, 2000, and 2002!

Wallabies well poised to double down on All Blacks

His speed makes him a great cover defender. He’s made plenty of try saving tackles that no one else could have made. He often also misses tackles because he’s the only one that managed to get back to at least make a half tackle. Yes, he’s been steam rolled but hasn’t every back?

Barrett: Our attack will click and All Blacks will retain the Bledisloe

Why would anyone go along to a game just to boo their own team? They’d be better off spending their time watching another sport

Ardie Savea named at 6 as All Blacks keep Barrett-Mo'unga combo for Bledisloe Cup

I’m not sure that Australia will win but I agree with Waugh’s sentiment. The ABs were fantastic in the years leading up to 2015, enjoyed a decent start to 2016 when everyone else was in disarray but since the Ireland test in Chicago we’ve been slowly declining. Losing to Ireland for the first time ever in 2016, under-performing against the Lions in 2017, then outplayed by the Boks in two games and losing to Ireland again in 2018. I’m not confident about the RWC at all. It looks a lot like the aftermath of 1996 again

Phil Waugh believes the All Blacks are a shadow of their former selves

It’s a quasi national team from a country ranked 10th, behind Fiji currently. They’ve made the final once and as we’ve seen in recent years, making the final doesn’t tell you much about your chances of ever winning one. Unless you’re the Crusaders. Just ask the Lions, Brumbies, Sharks, Stormers, and Tahs.

Argentina's case for a second Super Rugby franchise

The waratahs could also be a national side if they could convince the full Argentine squad to play for them.

It seems to me that having only one super rugby team to pick from is detrimental for the national team so it all evens out in the end

Phil Kearns reckons the Jaguares should not be in Super Rugby

His Instagram picture didn’t quote but paraphrased 1 Corinthians, which talks about fornicators, adulterers, homosexuaIs, etc, then added the heII part from somewhere else in the bibIe. He excluded extortioners and the covetous for some reason. In the comments, he quoted Galatians, which talks about adultery, fornication, witchcraft, uncleanliness, etc but no mention of homosexuality. If he really wanted to get a message to someone in his community about adultery, he could have stuck with Galatians, and wouldn’t have had to say a word about homosexuality. Or he could have excluded homosexuality the way he excluded extortioners. This wasn’t the first time he’d done it. He knew perfectly well what he was doing.

Folau's contract officially torn up by RA, but court challenge looms likely

Did you notice how quickly the ABs who liked Folau’s comments backtracked? If players do anything that might rock the boat, reIigious or not, they’re given the Word and step into line. I don’t think Folau would have survived in NZ either.
Recent examples – slightly provocative pictures in a club changing room were painted over last week at the demand of NZ Rugby. The Crusaders dropped the horses from their prematch show when Steve Tew stepped in.

Folau fired: Rugby Australia axe Israel

You can suspend someone if they do a thing and then agree not to do it again but Izzy’s post is still up. He was offered a lower grade sanction if he removed the post but he decided against it. RA had two options – fire him or back down and rip up the code of conduct that all other players, coaches, and administrators abide by.

Folau fired: Rugby Australia axe Israel

Talk about cherry picking! For full context: “I’m pleased to announce there is no ‘gay gene,’” Ganna said. “Rather, ‘nonheterosexuality’ is in part influenced by many tiny genetic effects.”

Besides, it doesn’t matter if being gay is nature, nurture, or 100% a choice. There is nothing wrong with being gay and yet there is a long history of discrimination against gay people. That is why people are jumping to their defence.

Folau confirms he knocked back RA's peace offering

Not saying I agree with the previous poster but with regards to NZ Rugby’s financial position – their aim is to break even in the long term. Everything they earn, they put back into the game. Their revenue is lumpy, depending on whether or we’re hosting some major event, like the Lions, the RWC in 2011, or WRWC, or factors like offshore games, RWC reducing the number of local tests. If you look at their profit over a 12 year period though, it is usually stable and close to zero.

Australia decides: Who would vote for Izzy?
