The Uruguay captain's reaction to huge Fiji win is what the Rugby World Cup is all about

By The Roar / Editor

They’re calling Uruguay’s 30-27 win over Fiji the second greatest upset in Rugby World Cup history but Uruguay’s captain knows how much hard work went into the victory.

Juan Manuel Gaminara spoke passionately after his side shocked Fiji and he held back tears about what it means for the team that no one gave a chance.

“I’m really proud of my country,” Gaminara said.

“We’re not the biggest, we’re not the tallest but we came here to win.”

Gaminara also made reference to the fact that nothing comes easy for Tier two nations who have to struggle just to make it to the big dance.

While Fiji certainly didn’t play their best and will be rueing a lot of errors, Uruguay held their nerve and stuck to their gameplan to create history and their first win at a World Cup since 2003.

Haha internal. Did you pick up your name after steering at the mirror for two hours! Meads would have thought it was all just super fine. Peace

My wife thinks I am a heartless bastard as I never cry in the movies.....well I cried like a baby during this interview! That is what rugby is about, it bring back memories from the RWC 95.

Yes, that's what I saw too. I couldn't see any contact to the Fijian head. I wonder now which Uruguay player will get cited tomorrow.

This posting is bizarre. NZers not in Australia on a certain day in Feb 2001 basically can't become Australian citizens. The folk over the Tasman are pretty agitated about how Australia treats NZers, right through to the dinkum Aussie "ROOs" we send to NZ to become one-person crime waves. (ROOs are Returned Overseas Offenders, the people who grew up here in Australia, call it home, and are chucked out as a side effect of "be strict on borders because boats and Muslims.") It's worth looking into the facts on, Kiwis have fewer entitlements than pretty well any other group in Australia. Cheers.

I guess I will chalk you up for one who does not subscribe to the Robert Muldoon perspective on Kiwi to Oz migration. As he famously said " New Zealanders who leave for Australia raise the IQ of both countries"

So your excuse for the next-to-God All Blacks losing to Australia is that they deliberately threw the game. Do you have any idea how truly pathetic you are?

Purdo, the All Blacks are the untouchables to the majority who frequent here as AB supporters. Just like some of the 600K of kiwis who live in Australia, their sense of entitlement in unfathomable. Our government allows them to live here in an agreement that is hardly reciprocated in any fashion. Why we allow this when no other nation gets the same treatment is mind boggling since they have no real intention to become Australian and support Australia. They claim as a nation to be humble and understated but some of their statements on this website portray the opposite. Their only sense of identity is the All Blacks who are untouchable.

URU coach said before the match: "Fiji is one team when attacking, and another when defending". Boy did he call it. Tackling during some passages was appalling.

Jokerman, you seem very bitter about the Wallabies. I’m wondering why. I saw slo mo replays of Hodge’s alledged armless tackle. The way I saw it was that Hodge was trying to wrap his arms around Yato, but got smashed out of the way before he could to so. I think I’m quite a dispassionate person, and I do like to see sport as fun among friends rather than as bitter conflict among enemies.

Actually more relevant is actual Rugby and perhaps the legendary Sir C Meads. How do you think he would have gone in today’s game? He certainly would have called your soft attitude out. Imagine if he found you whining over a ??red for that tackle.

There was a bit of talk about the Fijian forwards being more potent for this RWC but not much has changed. Not enough graft as a pack to earn the right to go wide. Well done Uruguay, fully deserved scalp.

I’m a Fijian /Wallaby supporter. I wanted Fiji to win well but you have to earn that right! Terrible game for Fiji ,did not deserve to win the way they played. Well done Uruguay awesome display of heart and bravery. Go the Wallabies.

14 All Blacks can beat 15 Aussies. As I’ve said before 7 lions will always beat six hyena’s and two dear. The rugby championship we always mix it up, take a loss for the bigger picture...’11, ‘15 we came in losing the rugby championship and then won the World Cup. Yes you’re hoping for a red ...it’s like the under arm delivery for you.

I would like to see them go far. But realistically they can’t win it. They’ve got it in them to make one big upset. I’m hoping they can take out England if they meet.

Actually this result suggests Fiji would have lost to 14 Aussies. 14 All Blacks can’t beat 15 Aussies though. Just waiting for more ABs to do something silly... SBW? Barrett?
