Kurtley Beale should be the Wallabies fullback

By Racing Chicken Trainer / Roar Rookie

I am currently guilty of attempting click bait, but I hope you all forgive me, but I truly do believe Kurtley Beale should play fullback against Wales.

The Wallabies are currently playing on a high, or as much as a high as they have been compared to the last few years.

Sadly, this high is due to one win, that being against The Darkness in Perth. Now any win against Those In All Black is a positive, but of course we all know what happened in our next match. With Michael Cheika’s win rate, or lack thereof, the last few weeks showed us the greatest possible hope, for quite frankly hope, that we have had in a long time – probably since the last World Cup.

Higher Being Above help us if that means anything, as Cheika couldn’t possibly have a master plan, that results in results, after years of frustrating us, could he?

Anyway, back to the clickbait.

Beale should play at fullback, in the oncoming Welsh game, even against all my, and a few fellow Roarers, misgivings.

No he doesn’t go well up against a strong kicking game, no he doesn’t inspire fantastic as a last line of defence, no he doesn’t always create straight running lines, nor does he fulfil his potential, whether realistic or wishful thinking.

Yet when he is on, he is on, and as rare as it has been for some time, when he is on, generally the Wallabies are on.

Now whether that is because he benefits from the Wallabies themselves clicking, or they benefit from him clicking, well quite frankly it’s too late to answer that question.

If none of you have noticed, the World Cup is currently underway, and we don’t have time to debate, nor experiment with this equation. Cheika (and Co), have made their decisions, and we should all, whether we agree or not, support the Men in Gold, regardless, of whether or not we think Pooper should exist, James O’Connor should be in the squad, or whether Adam Ashley Cooper should be in the World Cup potentials, let alone potentially in the game day squad.

So why should Beale play Fullback?

Quite frankly, because Michael Cheika, Beale and Michael Hooper, are all “success players”. That is, they are fantastic when things are going well, yet struggle when things become, well, problematic. And lets be honest, the last few years with these few at the top of the Wallaby hierarchy, have been problematic.

Also, success has been few and far between, so we have also only seen their worst, and rarely their best. I don’t believe they know what to do, when things aren’t going to plan.

Cheika had success at the Tahs and was promoted to national coach due to interesting circumstances and being “our only hope for positive rugby”.

Hooper converts penalties to line outs to play “positive play” even though at these times our line out was poor. And Beale operates on forward momentum and does his best impression of Sebastion the Crab when not receiving said momentum.

Yet while I am writing a negative report, I am still pushing that Beale play fullback. This was part of our most recent success.

He is a player that plays on confidence. He is an integral part of our plans (or lack thereof). To drop him now, everyone takes a hit. Cheika, Hooper, and everyone involved in the current plan.

If we want Beale to pull us out of the Poop(er… sorry couldn’t help myself), then he needs to be confident, in both his own skills, and the faith of the team, and the nation behind him.

Whether we think he can or not, it’s too late, or at least for this game against Wales.

Pushing him to the wing, or the bench, where a lot of us think he can be most effective, stunts his confidence, and for good or bad, Beale playing confidently is now an integral part of the push for us to achieve any success in this World Cup cycle.

We would be asking a confidence player who the powers that be have placed faith in, who also plays his best when luck, the bounce of the ball, and faith are put in him, to play without this.

If we drop, or move, or demote Beale now, my opinion is he becomes dead weight. Unfortunately we are too deep into this campaign to do this.

So I hope Cheika plays Kurtley at the back. I hope his team backs him, and most importantly, I hope Kurtley backs himself.

When he is good, he is the best.

Let’s hope for the best when we play the Welsh!

I can’t decipher why he was picked either But once we picked him (we being a Cheika and Co), I assumed and think we should have kept picking. He’s either not in the game day squad. Or he is and he’s at FB. He’s a do or die

RugbyLover my article didn’t come across as I wanted. Too many beers haha Beale should have been benched (or not played for some time). But if Cheika was going to stick with him (which until today I truly believed), then he was FB or bust.

Blah Blah, I wish that had happened. Earlier. I think it’s too late now. But if he wasn’t (which I thought Cheika would stick) then I thought he was better either playing run on FB, or not playing at all. But as at the time of writing the article, I was convinced Cheika would pick him, and if he did pick him, I was hoping he wasn’t dropped to bench or wing, as if he is in the plans, then it’s FB or nothing in my opinion. I’m actually stoked and flabbergasted this has happened, but I still believe it should have happened earlier. Should he be on the bench if dropped, no I don’t think so. Hopefully Cheika has a plan! I agree with him being dropped, but the rest of the changes I neither saw happening, nor wish for (Genia and Foley particularly)

Peter I agree, wholeheartedly, and obviously haven’t perpetuated this in the article. He should have been benched (or dropped), much earlier. But if he wasn’t (which I thought Cheika would stick) then I thought he was better either playing run on FB, or not playing at all. Come on mate, there has been more than numerous comments on this site for over a year about Beale’s lack of form. He should have done what many good players have done before him and quit when still ahead. But for reasons no one can decipher he keeps getting picked. So I don’t blame him for thinking that if he keeps being included then why not take the bucks....even if it means he keeps embarrassing himself at the Super and international level. You are only as good as your last game....but his good last game was about 2 years ago

As many of us have repeatedly observed almost all of 2019 .... there were 6 Aussie fullbacks all better than Beale - DHP, Banks, Speight, Hodge, Maddocks, even O'Connor is much better. 3 of those didn't get selected in the squad at all. 2 have been selected out of position on the wing. O'Connor is selected as a centre but was in past often an excellent Wallaby FB. Mr Teflon Kurtley Phipps Beale was always a certainty for the FB position if Cheika got his way. Now with Hodge out we're stuck with him and the slowest back 3 in living memory. On form of past 3 years Beale clearly did not deserve a place in the squad.

Jack Maddocks has not played for Melb. Rising. He has been training with the Wallaby squad and now has been loaned to the 7.s squad. Links, ''https://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/rugby/wallabies-news-australia-sevens-rugby-jack-maddocks-olympics/news-story/7d4166ae4ff9e48e97ac13b3b14dcb74''

It is click bait, but unfortunately, with the current squad, the best answer. If Tom Banks was over there, instead of playing for the Vikings, it would be a different conversation.

The first bit is true but some one missed a tackle before that. Hodge 4 in 20 minutes. Only Matt Burke was able to provide that sort of defence. No other FB in world Rugby is any better than Beale at that. Even Ben Smith the best gets beaten. It depends on what’s coming at them and how isolated they are. We were told to keep in line between the ball and the try line at FB.

Get Petaia to run into Hodge at training. Send them home injured and get Speight and Banks over there.

Beale is fullback and there is no one else over there or left behind who would be any better. Banks would be the next best. I’m not sure what they want from Beale. 1 Run straight apparently is one thing. No one runs straight only Kerevi, Kuridrani and Koreibeti. Beales ability to run into gaps and space is his forte. Then throwing the pass to a speedster. 2 Any pass he throws that they drop or goes into touch . His fault. 3 Can’t tackle ! He is better than Hodge, HP, OC, Toomua or Foley head on . Ask SBW. 4 Score tries they say. He will if he gets good ball going forward rather than attacking from his own quarter running back kicks. Kerevi doesn’t pass to him or anyone else. Kurtley is an Aboriginal player with all the gifts they have . Anticipation, Unpredictability , quick off the mark and able to step brilliantly. It’s natural , you can’t coach it or learn ; you take advantage of it and put the right players around him . Wingers with pace and defence, a solid 13, a 10 and 12 who can pass and tackle. Very little of this is in place. Kurtley has been able to play well in good teams and would be able to do so in any of the best test sides above us. Leave him alone and build his confidence.

Fullback is last line of defense. Beale is a turnpike.

It's worth a shot. Warner's hands are clearly better at catching.
