Many words have been used to describe Toby Greene.
Thug, grub, public enemy number one.
In one headline, the Herald Sun described him as The Joker, Hannibal Lecter, Michael Corleone… Toby Greene.
My own reflections at first led me to believe that Greene was an imp of the perverse – someone who did wrong for the pure sake of it.
Further reflection convinced me that I was in error.
Toby Greene didn’t do the wrong thing on purpose, because Toby Greene didn’t do wrong at all.
For a wrong to have been committed, it must go against the norms of the world in which it has taken place. What has Toby Greene done that has not been done on football field before?
In fact, Greene’s conduct is tame compared to many other players.
What is going on here?
The only answer that makes any sense is that Greene’s behaviour is seen as illegitimate because the haters don’t see the Giants as legitimate.
Too bad.
We don’t need any validation from Victorians, the media, or so-called experts.
We won’t be taking moral lectures from people who laud the same conduct in their own players.
You can foam at the mouth all you want. We don’t care what you think of Toby Greene, or the Giants, or even our beleaguered brothers on the Gold Coast.
When I heard Toby Greene described as the heart and soul of the Giants, I was skeptical. Now I believe it.
If you want an apology for Toby’s actions, you’ll have a long wait.

You're taking being a sore loser to a whole new level, you may want to reflect on your comments. RFC handled the Pell issue far better than the Liberal Party, two former Prime Ministers and just about all the Murdoch press. Personally, never had any time for Pell, former Richmond man or not.

Raimond, it’s over. Richmond had a field day, GWS did very well to get there, Richmond supporters celebrated with gusto, the RFC made a public statement months ago denouncing Pell, & Toby Greene isn’t going to change his ways any time soon, no matter who he plays for. Just let it go, man. I urge you.

Literally none of what you said is correct. (a) My argument is not 'based on' the amount of times Greene has been reported. That's only one aspect of it, albeit a pretty damning one - you do realise that fines and misdemeanours are still the result of reportable offences that have been upheld, right? Funny how the vast majority of other players don't seem to have the same issue. (b) I'm not justifying Hawkins' behaviour at all. His strikes are stupid and dangerous and his latest suspension was absolutely warranted. Probably lucky to only get a week. I'm just pointing out what look to be glaringly obvious differences in the nature of the offences he commits. As I've now said multiple times, his offences don't seem to have any kind of pre-planned thought behind them. Greene's do. You don't start sticking your boot up in people's faces or gouging people's faces in consecutive matches unless it's something you've thought about. And even if I'm reading too much into that difference, Hawkins isn't 'many other players' as Raimond has claimed. He's one player - who has been reported fewer times than Greene in a career that is over 100 games longer. If that's the best you can offer to support you claim that Greene is hard done by then it's pretty ironic you would suggest my own argument is full of holes. Again, no bias. I'm judging Greene based on his track record, just as I judge Hawkins. I don't doubt Greene is a heart-and-soul player who loves his club. Doesn't excuse some of the stuff he does on a footy field.

It wasn’t an effigy of Evil Tobe at all, Raimond, just a cardboard sign of the eye gouger burnt on top of a shop awning by one person. Thousands of Richmond supporters just having a good time on Swan St. Every other club in the country wishes they had that passionate following.

Pretty silly article Raimond. It doesn't take long to come up with examples of things Greene has done wrong that are outside the norm. For a start, it's not normal to have been charged 18 times in a career. It's not normal - in fact I don't think it's ever been done before - to karate kick an opponent (Dahlhaus) in the face while receiving a handball. The list goes on and on. Nearly all were unmanly, unprovoked cheap-shot acts on unsuspecting ball players. I think the Roar editors failed to apply vetting of unprofessional, click-bait articles here. Please try a little harder.

The problem would be between your ears Raimond. While I'm not in Sydney I know there is minute coverage of AFL and Green would be known far better in SA, WA and Victoria than in NSW. If he doesn't follow social media he wouldn't have a care in the world and intelligent people don't follow social media. Green has a problem in that he seeks to intimidate the tackler on each occasion. It seems incurable for him so you have to think all he has is footballing ability. I don't think Green is hated at all. It is just the current headline. Footys over now.

He may be a fantastic person off field, but he is his own worst enemy on field. Dermie said he just such a competitor, true and a great asset to have, problem is he can't ignore the red mist and until he learns how to control that, he'll always be a grub player.

It was like Collingwood booing gaff on his return from suspension, Freo has that right anyone else is jumping on a non sensical bandwagon.

I didn't think it was as bad as the booing directed at an away team playing West Coast at home. Richmond vs West Coast in 2018, just about every Richmond possession booed. Melbourne vs West Coast at the 2018 Prelim was also pretty ordinary. And West Coast were the better team on the day by quite a margin.

I think most supporters have no feelings either way for GWS, don't love them or hate them. There was silence when they ran onto the MCG to play Richmond this year (can't remember the round). As strange as it may sound, I would rather have my team booed running out at an away game than just silence.

Miers dive after he jumped in the path of Houli is what got it going. But Miers responded pretty well I think, with some good disposals. Apart from his diving in the Prelim, I have enjoyed watching Miers this year. And yes, Richmond players dive too, and they are booed by the opposition supporters too.

Not really James it means there are a huge amount of holes in your argument which is based on amount of times Greene is reported though most are fine misdeamours and he's only been suspended 7 times. The fact you are justifying the actions of Tom Hawkins somewhat when he punches blokes in the head because as you put it he's a big ox shows to me a pre ordained bias towards Greene so instead of breaking the facts down you've created a emotive argument that suits your belief system.

Defend Green all you want... his actions are there for all to see, its not like its a malicious rumour being spread about him.

Three weeks in a row he has attacked the face of an opponent who is lying helpless on the ground... If he pulled that stunt in the street he'd be eating meat through a straw for the next two months.

Once again, I don't hate GWS (or even Greene, for that matter - I just want to see him focus on the footy). I think you'll find that plenty of Roarers are in the same boat. Repeating the same thing over and over doesn't make it true.

I never implied he was an upstanding citizen. More that he just does dumb, spur of the moment stuff. Hawkins is a big ox who loses his cool. Greene's studs and gouging appear - at least, to my eyes - to have far more thought behind them. Disagree all you want but the OTT sarcasm reflects more on your ability to argue a point than it does mine.
