Takeaways from Australia's win over Taiwan

By News / Wire

Here are five things we can take from Australia’s 7-1 win over Taiwan.

* ARNOLD’S RUTHLESS EDGE HAS BEEN FOUND

Since the start of the qualifiers Graham Arnold has called for his players to be ruthless and that’s what they were in Kaohsiung. Four goals in the first half put the result beyond doubt and the flurry of strikes late in the second-half will have delighted the Australian coach as the Socceroos showed no mercy to a tiring Taiwan.

* RHYAN GRANT IS A BONE FIDE SOCCEROOS STAR

He only debuted last year but Rhyan Grant is almost undroppable at right-back now for the Socceroos. The Sydney FC defender knows Arnold from their time together in the A-League and is a vital part in the coach’s plan. His overlapping ability stretches defences and his delivery from wide led to two of the first-half goals.

* SUDDENLY AUSTRALIA’S STRIKERS LOOK GOOD

Adam Taggart’s first-half double was the rejuvenated striker’s first international goals since 2013 while Jamie Maclaren came off the bench to make it four goals in a week with Australia’s sixth. If both can keep up their good form at club level perhaps the Socceroos goal threat is a bit more dangerous than first assumed.

* HARRY SOUTTAR WILL WORRY DEFENCES

The big Scottish-born defender may have had one of his two goals against Nepal deemed an own-goal by the referee but there was no stopping him grabbing a double in Kaohsiung. The 198cm Souttar’s threat from set-pieces gives Arnold a great option for the campaign particularly with Aaron Mooy and Ajdin Hrustic providing excellent delivery.

* AUSTRALIA’S DEFENCE REMAINS UNTESTED

After Kuwait and Nepal offered little threat going forward, the Taiwanese showed good spirit and intent at times. They were never going to defeat the Socceroos but their 21st–minute goal exposed a lack of understanding between Milos Degenek and Harry Souttar as Chen Yi-Wei stole in to head past Mat Ryan. There were a couple more close calls throughout the game and Graham Arnold admitted he was disappointed with the defensive performance. Improvements must be made before the trip to Jordan in November.

My takeaway is we have unearthed x-factor players in the front third. Mabil, Hrustic, Arzani, Ikonomidis and Borrello are capable at taking on players and the ability to combine in chance creation which has been a weakness of ours for awhile. Souttar is a beast in the air but im waiting to see how he goes against better opposition. Roll on to Jordan next month.

Yes 2006 was the golden generation, we have no Kewell, no Viduka & definitely Milligan now is no Grella, however outside of that I don't see too much difference. Only difference is the likes of what we had in 2006 was very prominent in 2006 the more robust, athletic game that the Socceroos played. Now most teams are more professional & are athletic, but now we have to rely on skills to break defences & we lack those types of players both today & in 2006 outside of Kewell & Dukes.

I don't know about royalties, but Donald Trump seems to have named the presidential plane after his favourite sneakers.

I’m afraid I am of a like mind. My view is that this is a poor Roos team that will struggle against the better Asian nations, and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if we don’t qualify for the last 32 team world cup finals. When we are pulling a 34 year old from the bottom of the English div 3 to captain our national team, you know we are in real trouble. That Milligan is our captain illustrates just how far our national team has fallen since 2006. Milligan wouldn’t even have been considered for the squad.

Classic Nick. Robertson is highly rated in junior ie kids football. He's never played a first team game. Not even close. There is zero evidence that he's not the next Nicky Rizzo, Jamie McMaster or Kaz Patafta. From memory Francois has played in the EFL Cup and nothing else. How about we make people earn a cap, as opposed to calling them up based on nothing other than being juniors at big clubs? Or players you've heard about in Football Manager?

I`m sorry to be Mr doom and gloom but I have seen nothing in these last 2 matches to suggest that we will progress from the group stage let alone qualify. If our intentions are to just qualify for a world cup then we are in trouble. FFA have to start looking at their curriculum and what it is doing to our players at the elite levels. We have nowhere near the desire and commitment to challenge the top football nations of the world and it is not just good enough to qualify we have to go to a World Cup knowing that we are a chance of winning it not just trying to survive a group. We have gone away from teaching our youngsters how to win and more about making everyone happy. Even in the NPL Youth Leagues it is about being inclusive when the next step for them is senior football and they need to know that it is ok to win. This is just my opinion and would be happy to see what everyone else thinks. What about you JB?

Watched the match. Don't agree with any of this analysis apart from the final point: AUSTRALIA’S DEFENCE REMAINS UNTESTED Rhyan Grant was very impressive going forward. But, easily exposed for the goal scored by Chinese Taipei. His attacking instincts are terrific, but the better Asian nations will expose him on the counter. Or, we need to be smarter with our midfielders covering him when he's attacking. Chinese Taipei could've scored a 2nd close to the end, when Souttar was drawn out wide to cover Grant & he slipped over in the box. Do that against Jordan & they'll punish us.

Another takeaway was that the combinations were starting to come together, which again highlights the issue of the number of matches the Socceroos play compared to other teams. I'm looking forward to the Copa America next year. It might be a good opportunity for Tyrese Francois and Alex Robertson to make the squad and show what they can do. Tyrese Francois made the U17 squad but Manchester City based Robertson didn't. The Joeys FIFA U17 World Cup campaign starts on October 27. - https://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/robertson-a-doubt-but-miller-a-shout-for-joeys-world-cup-mission

enjoyed the game. Even though they were outplayed, at times the Chinese Taipei players showed some great technical skills in possession. Our passing was often pretty average but hard to sing nothing but praise with that scoreline.

There have got to be question what these players are doing in Europe apart from Mooy the rest of the team looks pathetic. Souttar so he is tall and scores from set pieces , well the rest of his game looks very suspect. Borello in particular looked terrible, you expect players to improve not go backward. Taggart and McLaren they seem to be completely incapable of controlling the ball even against this opposition , if a defender is there they lose the ball straight away. Taggart because he is also lazy is a negative, all these two mostly do is hog the tap ins, Taggart scored a lot of goals in the K-league yet his famous and previously well performing team are way down the table, and thats because having a tap in hogger doesn;t contribute anything to the rest of their efforts. Jeggo was useless , I dont understand what he was doing took forever to pass the ball even to completely free players. Degenak just useless as usual, suspect in defence, cant pass that well, doesn;t offer a threat from set pieces unlike Souttar. Irvine works hard, he is great in the air and gets into the box, his game is still rough. Mabil hasn;t improved on his play in the A-league,but at least hasn't declined. Smith looked a bit better since he has gone to the MLS, and showed good enterprise still i think Davidson is a lot better. Amini seems to have been turned into a zombie by Europe was better in the A-league, his technique at least is good, but not sure what he is doing. Grant was great but Arnold has got to give him free reign to get forward more often, he seems to be held back . I think we have 10 better central defenders easily. Its really weird apart from Mooy the European players are looking worse, there are a 100 players that are better than a lot of that team.
