Wallabies face All Black competition for Dave Rennie's services

By News / Wire

Glasgow head coach Dave Rennie has been approached in relation to the upcoming vacancy of New Zealand manager.

Two-time Super Rugby-winning coach Dave Rennie has reportedly been Rugby Australia’s frontrunner to take over the Wallabies from Michael Cheika, but now his native country have made a counter move.

Steve Hansen will leave his role as All Blacks head coach after the World Cup third-place play-off.

When asked if he had been approached by New Zealand, Rennie told STV: “Yeah, they have probably made contact with a number of Kiwis who are coaching over this way about interest for the role.

“I know they are going to have a process where they interview then make an appointment in the new year.”

The 55-year-old added that it was obviously flattering and humbling because the All Blacks have always been such a great side.

“I guess I haven’t had a lot of time to dwell on that because I’m totally focused on what I’m doing here,” he said.

Rennie has previously stated he will see out his Warriors contract, which expires in June 2020.

Losing Arnold and Coleman overseas takes 2 away who like the physical stuff and both would thrive under Rennie if he got the gig. A good workman like McAffery from the Brumbies would be someone that would get a good look in if Rennie was coaching.

Sounds like any NZer that comes into coach wont be received to well from the Australian public.

He's also a 'world famous in NZ' boy. Went to school with his wife. We need at least one Northerner.

That is a worry, where are the hard combative test standard players he will bring in to the team. I thought Deans had problems expecting our forwards to do the job as if he was dealing with a Kiwi pack.

Scott McLeod once worked with Jamie and Tony at the Highlanders so there is good history there.

Laurie Mains has written that he feels the new AB coach needs to be someone who has experienced defeat and also had experience rebuilding a side. He was clear that this was not a shot at Razor, as such, but it was probably something of a nod to Joseph and/or Rennie. Personally, I like the idea of having a pathway. That doesn't necessarily mean Fozz gets the gig but it might mean that Razor would either need the right team of people with experience in rebuilds, or to serve some time at national level as an assistant. I am attracted by the sense that he manages players well and gets the best out of them. Rennie should avoid Oz. I can't see him working, culturally. I see most Australian provinces as having quite defective cultures and my reading of McIlraith's book on Deans was that he found the culture here quite an adjustment, including player behaviour and the reluctance of the authorities to support him in that regard. An abrasive bastard like Jake White might work but he'll encounter the same problems of internecine warfare, unprofessional attitudes, a degree of suspicion of his foreign origin and the relatively low skills and nouse of top players, in part because of attitude and partly because grass roots and age level coaching are of a very uneven standard.

I thought Deans was initially a good coach for the Wallabies, but he became afflicted by tunnel-vision leading into RWC2011 and never recovered. (Just my $0.02)

I guess it all comes down to how to go about the work. Some are good delegators...others prefer more control. Its interesting how very many former players of excellent quality never make it as a coach. Perhaps these days the "head coach" is in reality the coordinator of the specialist coaches (attack, forwards, defense, and say goal kicking) and add a bit of man management on top? This might be dictated by the wishes of in this case RA management. But I believe a more centralised system might help in Australia, rather than the SR teams all with their own agendas. Not too strict but more coordinated than presently. So maybe RA management need to develop an overall philosophy...then find the coaching team that can best deliver that...that would focus the search for talent quite quickly. And as for Chiek sticking around to help...forget it! Anyone new can call him for his 2 bobs worth whenever they like.

My dream team would be Joseph as head Brown as tactics/attack Robertson as forwards Conrad Smith as defence.

I know, which is why I though it weird they were after Rennie for this role.

All Blacks do have a Manager. Darren Shand has held this role since 2004. He is neither a coach nor a selector.

" the All Blacks become a more physical team." It's interesting... I sort of feel the ABs have reaped what they've sown over the last few years with their focus on Harlem Globetrotter, rugby league style, almost cynical rugby, waiting to pounce on opposition mistakes. Rather than focus on the base of scrum, lineouts, mauls and rucks.... Even kicking game (although of course miles better than Australia in that department!) Rugby is made up of many facets, not just speedy breaks and offloads, and long may that continue.

Rennie is probably the best option in terms of coaches without international experience (aside from Robertson perhaps). I’d also have him before Gatland. Struggled to beat the Wallabies for 10 years, and despite Wales’ strong run, they never looked capable of winning the World Cup. Their style of play never looked like it could beat a more expansive team that was in form.

Deans had the best talent since the golden era: best kicking pair, Genia, Quade, JOC and Beale in their primes, Ioane, Pocock. He absolutely didn’t get the best out of them. But the biggest problem was that he was indeed building to getting the best out of them in 2010, but lost his nerve and seemed to sort of wave the white flag from the start of the 2011 World Cup.

On what basis will he ‘not get a fair go’ being a New Zealander? Deans was given over 5 seasons despite an underwhelming 2011 World Cup. Arguably, he was given more of a fair go than both Eddie Jones and Knuckles.
