Bitterness: The ultimate result of NRL success

By The King of the World / Roar Guru

Success is what every team aims for each NRL season but, being an annual competition with 16 teams and only one winner, that means there are 15 unsuccessful teams.

Most successful teams of an era have supporters that love them (as they do) and most other fans hating them.

I’ve seen this happen with Melbourne from 2006 onwards, Manly 2007 onwards and the Roosters 2013 onwards.

Even when their level of success drops, the hatred tends to stick and I’m pretty sure that’s how us NSW supporters felt during Queensland’s legendary eight-in-a-row streak.

Successful teams are the villains, they win the big one or are there for years in succession and become the Antichrist. When St George Dragons won 11 in a row, they most likely were the most hated team.

This is part of life. If you’re the most successful at your job or towards your goals, a lot of people will praise you but you’ll get more hate out of jealousy.

So here’s a warning towards my fellow Knights fans: give a few years with Adam O’Brien and just like he pushed Melbourne and Sydney with his style, we will become the villain – then Antichrist – of the competition.

Guess what the best thing about that is? There’s nothing wrong with it. Because it’s way better being hated for who you are and what you achieved, than being loved for who you’re not and what you don’t achieve.

Gee, Celtic Bandaid, what a bitter, twisted post! Do hope that your day improves & that you can find some joy, in Rugby League, during the coming season.

They cheated the salary cap 10 years ago and they are still hugely successful so to put down their success to just that is dumb. All teams wrestle as well buy the well - Roosters, Sharks and Manly are arguably even worse than the Storm on their day. Honestly the whinging from Rugby League fans is the worst thing about the whole sport, whether its whinging about Refs or whinging about teams who are successful. According to some League fans there has been only 2 or 3 legitimate premiers in the last 20 years! why bother even following the damn sport !!!

You cant verify they are either, how would anybody know what players are being paid. You have managers telling reporters an inflated price to drive his clients worth up and then you have the reporters exaggerating the price again to make it a better story

Lot of haters on this site and it's mainly because what's happened off field. Look at Manly - all that money years ago and now they have a leagues club that barely makes a profit. When ownership went away from the club it's not the same. I followed Wests till the merge now it's not the same. Now a Broncos supporter mainly because of the style of football they played under Bennett.

Gee Wests were loathed by all and sundry when they won in 2005 weren't they ? NQ the same 10 years later in 2015 ? No> Both clubs premierships were quite admired by all They played within the rules - (Lets See Did Melbourne ? No Easts? No Manly ? No) They have genuine supporters - (Do Melbourne? No Easts ? No) They are good to watch- (Are Melbourne? No) Like the majority I beg to differ. Its nor bitterness You just fail to see that these clubs success like you is hollow

Red, I haven't read a Courier-Fail for decades so I don't know (or care) what their content is today, but I wouldn't call it a "local rag" seeing as Murdoch bought it in 1987.

"The Roosters may have had the best halfback and best fullback in the game however they did not have the highest paid halfback and fullback in the game." That's one of the NRL's biggest problems. The complete inability to verify that statement.

Ron you've proved the whole point of this article with your comment. You hate the Roosters because you are jealous of their success. Instead of just admitting they are a very well managed club you fall back on claiming they are over the cap (which you have absolutely zero proof of).

yeah you are right. Those terms don't go near close enough to describing the passion.

Your answer lies in the question. The Roosters may have had the best halfback and best fullback in the game however they did not have the highest paid halfback and fullback in the game. There is a difference.

Lived in Brisbane/QLD all my life as a Rabbits fan and I have nothing for disdain for most Broncos fans. Sorry to say but most of them don't know how to lose (I have learnt from my 20+ seasons of being a Rabbits fan how to lose gracefully). My Dad follows the Broncos and is one of the good ones who you can joke with about their problems but most fans have a Courier Mail mentality.

The hatred doesn't come from the team's successes; more from the fact that certain clubs so obviously know how to rort the salary cap and get away with it. There is no way, for instance, the Roosters can field the team they did in 2019 and remain under the same salary cap as other clubs, no matter how the club and/or the NRL try to justify it. Blind Freddy can see it. If I remember correctly (yes I was around then) St George probably were the most admired team in the competition during their 11 premierships. BUT, with their then line-up, it would have been a different story if we had had a salary cap then.

As a Roosters (Easts) supporter the success St George achieved made them "a tall poppy" although they were admired & it took a rule change (tackle restriction) to "cut them down. Easts lost every game in 1966 & back then even a win would have been cherished. Then in the 1970's along came Manly & Ken Arthurson upon signing 3 Wests players was asked "why sign Ray Brown when you already have the Australian hooker?" He replied "because it weakens other sides". So for me they replaced St George as Public Enemy No. 1. In the 90's I enjoyed the Broncos style of play & was pleased when they defeated St George 2 years in a row. However after moving to Brisbane some 12 years ago I noticed a distinct anti-Rooster sentiment particularly in the "local rag". Their coverage of the Mitchell Pearce "dog incident" being an example as Broncos "incidents" are treated as "nothing to see here" matters. Hence the Broncos have taken the mantle as the "team I love to hate". Long may their premiership drought continue. Amen.

I don't hate Manly, am just to young to remember the silvertails era but probably would have hated them back then. I certainly don't/didn't hate them post 2007. Their success was off the back of entertaining football and players you cant help but like. I feel similar about the roosters, although admittedly there is a bit of underlying resentment for their ability to buy the best. How any club can buy the best halfback and fullback in the game in one year is beyond me. But ultimately I don't hate a club for buying players as every club does. Melbourne on the other hand... their prolonged success was built off the back of salary cap rorting and dangerous/game spoiling wrestling tactics. They refuse to admit any wrong doing by openly celebrating stripped premierships and crying poor us and tall poppy syndrome whenever the media bags them. Now there's a team to hate.
