Latrell Mitchell’s chances of staying at the Sydney Roosters appear slim after the club sensationally pulled an offer for a contract extension off the table.
The superstar centre met with Roosters officials on Tuesday and told them he wanted to explore his options for when his current deal ends after next season.
The Roosters then responded by pulling their offer for 2021 and beyond, which was reported to be worth around $800,000 a season.
“The Sydney Roosters have today advised the management of Latrell Mitchell that the club’s offer for 2021 and beyond has been withdrawn,” the Roosters said in a statement.
“Latrell has expressed that he would like to explore his options for season 2021, however he remains under contract with the Roosters for season 2020.”
Mitchell has already been linked to Canterbury, who are one of several cashed-up clubs on the hunt for stars from 2021.
His future has long been a point of contention, with a change in his management earlier this year prompting suggestions he could leave the club.
The Kangaroos centre has been with the Roosters since age 16 when he was picked up as a future star in Taree, before making his NRL debut three years later.
The 22-year-old has long been regarded as having the potential to be the game’s best player, but his inconsistency has at times been a concern.
He was the NRL’s leading points scorer this year, and has scored 65 tries in 96 games at the Roosters.
Meanwhile the Roosters face a battle to retain the stars from their back-to-back premierships, with Jake Friend, Sio Siua Taukeiaho, Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and Mitchell all off contract at the end of next year.

More misdirection and denial. Sad really how low your club has to stoop to buy premierships to get out from under the shadow of the Rabbit.

Morris has said he got better offers from the Super League. He has said he basically signed for minimum. I would love to see these so called sources. Hooper guesses aren't fact just FYI just like souths making a claim about Chricton pay packets arent facts.

3 different media sources confirmed it. It's hilarious the depths of denial Roosters fans get mired down in. When all else fails try misdirection right Jacks?

Its hilarious you think the Roosters are paying two 30 yr old wingers 500k each!

"Hard to think of a “bad signing” for either Club in recent years." Paul Carter? Angus Crichton in 2019 for $1 mill? THAT was money well spent!

"Roosters have youngster Billy Smith waiting in the wings." A South Sydney junior just like Nat Butcher. Develop your own juniors! The only REAL Roosters junior is Victor Radley. Cordner and Mitchell came to the Roosters system after they were 16 years old and were developed by other nurseries outside of the Steggles barnyard.

Gagai is on $600K. Sam Burgess was on $1.25 mill (which may have included TPA's). Cook is on $900K. That's it! Also remember Souths have lost John Sutton, George Burgess, Kyle Turner, Connor Tracey, Dean Britt, Rhys Kennedy, Jacob Gagan, Mawene Hiroti and Billy Brittain. So they have LOTS of $$'s to spend under the salary cap. Meanwhile several different media sources reported that the Roosters had the following signings on their salary cap for 2019: $1.1 mill - James Tedesco $1 mill - Cooper Cronk $1 mill - Angus Crichton  $850K - Boyd Cordner $650K - Jake Friend $650K - Luke Keary $550K - Latrell Mitchell $500K - Brett Morris $500K - Ryan Hall  You do the maths mate. The result equals "chooks are crooks!"

I think part of the problem is that the "inside platform" is so structured and so afraid of making mistakes they try too hard to be putting centres though gaps instead of just giving it to them and letting them do their own thing. Like James Roberts at the Titans, they would just give him the ball because they had no hope, and he would conjure stuff. At the Broncos he only ever got it on the 4th tackle and by that time everyone knew he was going to get it.

There's still a lot of strength in the Roosters team, Cronk is a loss but Keary has become a genuine top class half, Tedesco is the best fullback around, the pack is strong, the backline is strong. They seem to have very forward thinking admin and their coach and recent record make them attractive to good players when they decide they need to go shopping. The NRL is a notoriously bumpy ride but all evidence points to them still being very successful over the next few seasons at least. The Dogs could conceivably bounce back quickly, but i don't think out-bidding everyone for Mitchell is going to help with that.

Papi why do you think every decent player who doesn't play for Sths is on 1 million, If any one is rorting the cap its souths Gagai= 1 mill, was on 800k at Knights S.Burgess 1.5 mm!!!!

was a bit trite but the problem is Centres are highlight reels with no plot line. Their opportunity for involvement is incredibly limited compared to several other positions and often dependent on the inside men. That's why Inglis got moved to "5/8" (or a modern day inside centre) he was wasted relying on the inside platform. I'd say LM has more contract value as a fullback on bad team or one with a gaping hole but is a better player on a very good team at Centre, problem is you can't pay him like the bad team.

they’re only gold in the way that the value is hideously over inflated due to our attachment to a bygone era rather than the direct utility of the material itself.

Plus you should be able to find young centers that are effective. That's where the real cost savings are. If you line up a 1m centre v a 200k wunderkin, there's a decent chance that the opposite is happening somewhere in your spine or middle forwards.

I mean, apart from being leading point scorer and setting up the grand final winning try what else did he do all year? I disagree that a good centre is not worth the money, a great centre makes a massive difference. Not a bloke from the forwards or someone out of position, but proper line busting linkman is gold. I'd have him at the Broncos in a heartbeat. People complain about the spine, but seriously, unless they are throwing cut out balls to the wingers, they missed having great centres more all the last few years.

The person he should be modelling himself on is not Inglis, but Hodges.
