2019 AFL Draft Day 2 wrap: Every player picked

By Josh / Expert

The second day of the 2019 AFL Draft has come to an end with 44 more players finding AFL homes, including some of the notable sliders from the first night.

Dev Robertson, who many were surprised to see drop out of the first round of the draft, was the first name to be called out on the second day as Brisbane traded up to add him to their list.

Gold Coast also made a major move in live trading on night two, giving up their 2019 mid-first-round priority pick, traded to Geelong, to get Jeremy Sharp.

That leaves Geelong with three first-round picks in next year’s draft already – their own, West Coast’s, and the Suns’ priority selection.

Port Adelaide and Hawthorn successfully matched bids for Jackson Mead and Finn Maginness respectively, but Richmond managed to snatch a few players from rival clubs’ academies.

They took Noah Cumberland and Will Martyn from Brisbane’s academy, and St Kilda NGA prospect Bigoa Nyuon.

Brisbane also lost father-son prospect Lachie Johnson – who they had only offered a rookie deal – to Essendon, who picked him at 63.

Trent Bianco (Collingwood, pick 45) and Cameron Taheny (Geelong, pick 50) proved to be two of the most notable sliders of the draft, having both been in the mix for top 30 selection or earlier.

However there are plenty of notable prospects remaining on the board for tomorrow’s rookie draft, including a two-time under-18 All Australian in Mitch O’Neill, as well as others like Cooper Sharman, Darcy Cassar and Fraser Phillips.

Hey AD, a couple of kids from my High School who were there when I was attending who played VFL - Robert Walls (was still at school when playing) & Wayne Schimmelbusch. Schimma actually married a family friends daughter. They were’nt the best sportsperson there at the time, that title went to Raelene Boyle.

Personally much happier with Freos draft/trade this year as opposed to last year's. Onward and upward.

"without strengthening the draft hand of clubs who are their direct competition," They gifted the blues Martin and did a trade that gave the blues the player they wanted at 11 and a free hit at 22. On a points basis that trade cost the Suns 1,870 and gained them 1,452. They could have "filled all needs" and topped them up. As for Geelong getting a THIRD first round pick for 2020 not being an issue or them not being the Suns "direct competition" - if all the clubs behaved like that and kept giving the Cats bonuses because they are too far up the ladder to be "direct competition" they will always be top 4 and never "direct competition". No club should be playing for mid table, every club is your direct competition. At least you seem to be grudgingly accepting they overpaid with this latest foray.

Considering the list they filled all needs with the players they took and created good relationships for the future without strengthening the draft hand of clubs who are their direct competition, geelong getting what will be a mid teens pick in the end is not an issue unlike dealing with Carlton or freos of this world.

Putting aside the fact that this time last year this years draft was being touted as “weak” if the Suns didnt trade with Carlton for 9 but did trade for Martin getting a future second and future third they could have drafted Robertson and Sharp instead of Flanders and Sharp – either way getting 2 “exceptional talents”. Now they would have had an extra “mid round” pick in all of the first 3 rounds of 2020 (the AFL compo and Carltons 2 picks) if they don’t like the looks of next years draft they could; 1) Trade a combination of those 3 picks to someone like Carlton, Fremantle or Adelaide to get into the middle of the 2019 first round and take say Flanders 2) (more likely) Trade a combination of those 3 picks to get higher in the top 10 of the 2020 draft 3) (most likely) Trade a combination of those 3 picks for an extra 2021 first round pick. Whichever option the took would have resulted in at least 1 extra “exceptional talent” than they have got.

Again if you study next year's pool of draftees there isn't a standout except the boy in the wb academy, it's very weak which was highlighted by no bottom ages making all Australian this year a rarity indeed, all the players selected by GCS are highly rated with sharp also having played league footy for most of the year and being aa in last two championship, most clubs where happy to trade out of next year for a reason which was any of this top 30 would be top 5 next year due to its shallow nature.

“they got two exceptional talents” they over paid for. They could have taken one of those “exceptional talents” with 17 or 22, they could have taken another “exceptional talent” in Robertson with the other pick at 17 or 22. They could have taken a third “exceptional talent” with their mid first round pick next year and possibly taken another “exceptional talent” with the 2020 second round pick the blues were offering for Martin next year. The 2 “exceptional talents” (one of which managed to slide to pick 27) are going to have to be extremely “exceptional” to be equal the 4 players they missed. It isn’t just what you get is also what you give.

You don't folly the junior comps hey Macca, they got two exceptional talents for those trades and gave Carlton a player they obviously found problematic so I reckon they're doing ok.

“How do you know they haven’t learnt?” “The Suns have effectively traded Martin, 17 and 22 to Carlton for pick 11 AND their mid first round 2020 pick (to Geelong) for 27.”

How do you know they haven't learnt? Look at all their key decision makers resumes and you'll see they are more capable of making the correct assessment than people who are venting for a reason I'm unaware.

I wasn't upset when they got the compensation, not upset that they chose to give the blues a gift in Martin, not upset when they gave the blues another gift in trading 17 & 22 for 11 (massive win on points for the blues) and not upset now. I am annoyed that the Suns don't seem to be learning from their mistakes and are setting about wasting another round of AFL handouts with clearly unbalanced trades.
