Reports: Arrow accepts four-year deal with Souths, may move in time for 2020

Jai Arrow has told Gold Coast he will take up a lucrative four-year NRL deal with South Sydney from 2021.

Gold Coast are reeling after Queensland star Jai Arrow told the NRL club he ha accepted a lucrative four-year South Sydney deal from 2021.

There is speculation that Arrow will seek an early release and make his Rabbitohs debut in 2020.

But it is believed the Titans expect the star forward to see out the final year of his contract with the reigning wooden spooners.

The Rabbitohs have reportedly signed Arrow on a $3.2 million contract after identifying the 24-year-old as an ideal replacement for retired captain Sam Burgess.

Gold Coast had been quietly confident that Arrow would sign a contract extension after the Maroons forward repeatedly indicated his preference was to remain on the tourist strip with the Titans.

However, Gold Coast’s worst fears were realised when Arrow told new Titans coach Justin Holbrook and head of performance and culture Mal Meninga that he would link with the Bunnies in 2021.

The Titans are devastated after tabling what they believed was their best offer to Arrow, reportedly a three-year $1.8m contract.

It is understood Arrow was keen to stay on the Gold Coast but the big money Rabbitohs deal and a chance to reunite with his former Brisbane coach, seven-times premiership winner Wayne Bennett, proved too tempting to knock back.

Gold Coast’s only consolation is that they have cover for Arrow’s loss after recently signing Melbourne youngster Tino Fa’asuamaleaui on a three-year deal from 2021 believed to be worth $2m.

Arrow – who has played four State of Origin games for the Maroons – will have big shoes to fill when he arrives at Redfern.

He is expected to fill the void left by English great Burgess who was forced to retire at the end of the 2019 season due to a shoulder injury.

A couple of months age I tipped Mitchell to land at Souths but that most likely won't happen now according to Bennett although he has lied to the media before. You could be right about the Gold Coast for Mitchell, it's getting down to be about his last option. My fear of Mitchell heading up north is his heart may not be in it the same as when the Hayne plane landed there. What a flop that was for the club and the poor old coach who lost his job. Mitchell is a tremendous talent, a real crowd pleaser when on song but I fear his career will nosedive if he goes there. The trouble with the current professional era is players' hearts are only in their wallets.

No less than Manly has offered Dylan Walker who played for Australia and NSW before joining the Sea Eagles.

Good signing for Souths, but I can't see him staying 2020. Seems pointless once the heart has moved on. Also especially if the superior offer to another player is part of the reason. Personally, I think any player moving on whilst under contract must forgo some money. I wouldn't be paying for him or Latrell or any player to play elsewhere. They go, no worries, but the contract is over and I use their money on the next guy.

Wayne has thrown a positive light on his releasing Arrow from the Broncos in the first place and I can see his point but it also has an element of yet another top line player who would have stayed at the Broncos if they weren't surplus to requirements. It's a strong club who happily releases a player who ends up as an $800,000 player to one of your rivals. Maybe you get him for 5 or 6 hundred grand if you keep him? Telling every player you release that he's ''too good to hold back'' sort of lets you off the hook if he comes back to bite you.

Yeah, I definitely wouldn’t judge Burgess according to his 2019 performance.

Bennett doesn’t place a lot of emphasis on having dominant props. He values work rate and a low error rate far more highly.

Souths must have a fairly small pack for 2020?

As a Storm supporter I think we can cut Addo Carr a bit of slack. There's no deal been done yet. It's not like he's going immediately and leaving us in the lurch. He does have to play out next season with us & he will only be released if the Storm are given someone with equal ability or financial compensation for a transfer. Where do you find someone with Addo Car's ability who wants to come to Melbourne. Don't get me wrong, after Cronk being released early, only to come back and help Easts plot our downfall, leaves a very bitter taste. I'd have it as part of the conditions of his release that there is a certain club he can't go to. Like the one that offers life membership for being at the club for ten minutes.

Souths pack probably had more contributors though, Arrow had to average more because there was far less support than Burgess had. Burgess was also playing hurt most of the year.

I'm a little sceptical about the height and weight of Sam Burgess although his head appears to be very big. Arrow averaged more runs, more meters per run, double the off loads and in 2 games less than Sam last year made more tackles and was more efficient in defence?

True. They can get them there but can't keep them. Hats off to Ryan James who has stayed loyal throughout.

I wasn't aware of Arrow's measurements, but you are right. Sam, at least in his first few seasons, was a physically dominant player until injuries anf suspension got the better of him. Arrow seems to be a competent prop but not a dominant one.

Big motor and a tackling machine with ball skills yes. But Sam’s 10cm taller and 15kg heavier and can play front row. @100kg there’s heavier wingers than arrow. Gun player but not what Souths needed atm.
