Toby Greene among three inclusions to GWS leadership group

By Rob Forsaith / Wire

GWS have rejigged their leadership group for the 2020 AFL season, calling up foundation players Toby Greene and Jeremy Cameron plus Lachie Whitfield.

Foundation players Toby Greene and Jeremy Cameron have been elevated to AFL club GWS’s leadership group for the first time.

The Giants, seeking to bounce back from a gutting grand-final loss in 2019, have revealed an extended leadership group to support skipper Stephen Coniglio.

Greene, Cameron and Lachie Whitfield have all been given their first formal leadership roles as part of changes partly shaped by NRL legend Cooper Cronk.

The trio join Coniglio, Josh Kelly and Matt de Boer in what is now a six-man crew, while veterans Phil Davis and Callan Ward are no longer members after handing the captaincy to Coniglio.

The Giants have opted against naming a vice-captain, meaning it is unclear who will lead the club should Coniglio missing games through injury or suspension.

“The whole playing group has been through a thorough process alongside our leadership consultant Cooper Cronk to settle on this group,” football manager Jason McCartney said.

“All three players (Greene, Cameron and Whitfield) have been instrumental to the growth of the Giants in recent years and a spot in the official leadership group is well deserved.

“I’m really confident in the mix of players that will be supporting Stephen.”

Greene has had an eventful stint at the Giants since being picked up in the 2011 draft, the low point of which was serving a club-imposed ban of five games in 2014 after a drunken brawl.

The small forward’s white-line fever is perhaps best demonstrated by the fact he has been charged 18 times and fined a total of $26,350 under the AFL’s match-review process.

But the star’s competitive streak and character are highly rated at GWS, evidenced by his six-year deal last year that will go a long way to ensuring he is a one-club player.

Cameron had already been acting as a mentor to the club’s young forwards.

The 26-year-old’s elevation to the leadership group comes around 18 months after he copped a five-game ban for a hit on Brisbane’s Harris Andrews.

The Giants staunchly defended the gun forward in the aftermath of that blow, with coach Leon Cameron saying at the time that some pundits should be “embarrassed and disappointed” by their commentary of the incident.

GWS open their 2020 campaign at Giants Stadium on March 21, hosting Geelong in the first-ever AFL/AFLW double-header for premiership points.

Lol seriously anyone who goes hitting someone with enough force to fracture their larynx which is a high shot was delivering a football action is not only full of it but not the brightest spark in the matchbox, continue the Toby hysteria like a teenage girl seeing Zac Efron as it’s really making me smile on a Monday ????

There was a video on YouTube which showed some of the shifty things the Bulldogs were doing in the R22 match. It seems to have been taken down, but it looks like the EF was a 'line in the sand'-type event.

Geez you obviously believe in the boogey man and Toby is his name even though Tom Hawkins has been suspended just as much over same period and you obviously believe cotchins knees into Shiel was all above board lol, of course I excel in sledging FFS I deal with your simplicity so often it would drive mother theresa to such frustrations. Time to stop being a soft as Auskick loving footy fan cause players like Greene just like Ablett SNR just like woosha just like basil Campbell and the great Leigh Matthews will always be there. Jonas went for 6 weeks for an elbow to the back of gaffs head in 2015 I'm pretty sure Greene has only been suspended for 7 weeks total, you need to get a grip or cash in some super for a cruise ok.

That's a very poor response again, there is no one in that list that gets close to being as bad as Greene. Hall was a bad one but he was not a captain anyway. Your way off the mark again. No doubt you would be captain of the mud throwing, and you excel in the name calling dept. as well.

You're overly sensitive for someone who throws mud but eh Luke Hodge, Sam Mitchell ever watch them? Tom Jonas? Nat Fyfe? Luke Shuey? Joel Selwood? Trent Crotchin? Barry Hall? Tom Hawkins? Geez break down the number to suspendable offences and those only worth a fine and you'll get a better reflection of your silly argument, a player who has been suspended can be a vice captain even though you want the AFL to become a game of Auskick like softness which I find disappointing, no wonder Freo don't turn up anymore if that's the type of footy they want.

Luke Hodge, remember him?, Sam Mitchell was a premiership captain and drove his knees to injure aswell, Barry hall ring any bells, Tom Jonas, Joel Selwood isn't clean nor is cotchin(shouldn't have played in 2017), Fyfe is a tribunal regular, ever watched Ben Cunnington? Mr tummy taps is awesome, What about Shuey he's far from a clean player, all of the above step outside the rules of fair play so you might want a team of do gooders but footy has never nor will it ever be like that. Complaining about it is a fruitless venture.

Hey Vanilla, more false info. Who are all these Captain's you claim have done just as bad as Greene ? 18 trips to the tribunal takes some beating i reckon.

Numnuts insults?? Seriously I call my kids numnuts. You want to prosecute Greene so you need to provide the evidence on his lacking of vice captain material, your argument so far is to easy to defend and does come across as sooky, no rules state a player with a questionable record cannot be part of a leadership group does it?

Haven’t been defending the record numnuts I have been saying he is fine as a vice captain and plenty of players who’ve also been captain’s have done just as bad and the Greene ranters are sooks. He isn’t Rolf Harris but damn if ppl aren’t acting like he is.

Essence- Where are your facts? You say your seen worse ? Who matches Greene in the last eight years, he has been to the tribunal 17 times in his short career. How can you defend a serial offender and have a cheap shot at Bont's a fair player and others with a occasional appearance.

Bonts action was high with an elbow that fractured his larynx (not legal any day in any game but congratulations on delusion) in a Bulldogs supporter fantasy world that's a football action and that's the only place, what happened re dalhaus doesn't mean he's not able to be a vice capt, Tom Jonas smashed gaff in a few years ago with a elbow and don't see anyone howling he shouldn't be captain. Boring hypocrisy is a blight on this game.
