O'Donovan returns to Jets after Roar release

Newcastle Jets have signed striker Roy O’Donovan from Brisbane Roar, where he played only 12 A-League games this season.

Newcastle have landed a last minute A-League transfer with Roy O’Donovan returning from a short stint with Brisbane.

The 34-year-old scored six goals in 12 games for Roar, but has quickly fallen out of favour with Roar coach Robbie Fowler, and will return to the Jets on an 18-month contract.

The Irish striker was enticed north on a two-year-deal at the start of this season, but has not featured in Fowler’s side since December 13.

Late on Friday night Roar announced they would be releasing O’Donovan effective immediately.

“Roy has provided a number of memorable moments for our fans during his time at Brisbane Roar. We would like to thank him for his service to the club and wish him all the best moving forward,” said chief executive David Pourre.

The Jets are desperate to put some spark in their attack and O’Donovan has proven a prolific scorer in the past.

He is currently equal second-highest goalscorer for the club with 20 goals in 35 games for the Jets.

“We’re delighted to see Roy back in the red and blue and can’t wait to get him back on the ground in Newcastle,” said Joel Griffiths, football operations manager.

“He’s a proven goalscorer in this competition over a long period of time at different clubs, not to mention a fantastic influence and good person to have around the club.

“To have him back on board is a big get for us, and we’re looking forward to seeing what he can bring to the side for the rest of this season and next.”

Mauk and roy, 2 quality players. I’m expecting them to thrive with the clubs they’ve gone too now. Where are the goals going to come from for brissy now? Does God have any ideas? Lol

One has to wonder what these A-League 'Flip-Flop' contracts actually really mean? As for Roy, the grass wasn't greener on the other side of the fence.

I can't say that I've like some of his antics and 'Shaolin Soccer' imitation putting players in imminent danger of death, but hope he does well at the Jets. He is a character that desperately wants to win games. That's a good attitude to bring to any team (without the yellow/red cards of course  )

He's got to be better than Hoffman as back up striker. He and Arroyo together will at least offer some sort of goal threat. O'Toole, ROD. We are taking Roar rejects. Young next please!

Initially O’Donovan was kneeling at the alter & praising Fowler. How things quickly change in football. Newcastle are glad to have the lucky Irishman back.

This is like a stunning act of stupidity, already you see a player who was useless at Roar and the clueless fools Newcastle are bringing him back. Its like they cant help themselves.
