Dugan slams fitness story

By News / Wire

Cronulla star Josh Dugan has denied a report claiming his teammates have lost faith in him for an unimpressive pre-season, which has put his NRL future at the Sharks in doubt.

The Sharks will hold a meeting with Dugan’s agent Paul Sutton in the next 24 hours to discuss how to resolve issues with the former Australia star, including unconfirmed reports of a knee injury.

Fox Sports are reporting Dugan had missed training sessions over the pre-season and claimed his effort had been less than impressive, concerning coaches and teammates.

Sports opinion delivered daily

After the story was published, Dugan took to social media to refute it.

“Don’t let the truth get in the way of a good story”, he tweeted.

However, there appears to be more to the situation after Channel Nine reported Dugan is facing surgery that could rule him out for up to nine months to correct arthritis and worn cartilage in his knee.

On Wednesday afternoon Dugan’s agent was on a flight to Sydney and was unable to comment.

The Sharks have also been contacted for comment.

The Rugby League Players Association has reached out to both Dugan and his manager for more information.

The 29-year-old is in the final two years of his deal at the Sharks which is believed to be worth around $900,000 per season, making him one of the highest paid players at the club.

The Sharks are dealing with a salary cap squeeze, as well as an excess of players in the back line including four centres: Dugan, Bronson Xerri, Jesse Ramien and Josh Morris.

Xerri, considered an emerging star of the game, is contracted with the Sharks until the end of 2021 and will be free to negotiate with rivals from November 1, while Ramien is in the first season of his four-year-deal with the club.

Last season Dugan played 23 games for the Sharks at centre, fullback and wing, and scored 11 tries.

I think you’ve hit an interesting point on how many games he actually finishes. Time out from injuries aren’t just about weeks on the sideline but minutes playing busted and/or hobbling off. Dugan might be a decent player but was a poor buy for Saints and a worse one for the Sharks

For what I understand the Sharkies are not only attempting to free up some cap space but also to promote a positive culture and believe that Dugan and Fifita hinder that process. From personal observation, Dugan may have played 23 games last year, but rarely finished. To be brutally honest he reminds me of a kid you see playing park footy who always stays down after each run or tackle, every run or tackle. I also noted that some readers raved about his stats, I saw that these stats were taken off the NRL website. On that same page it had stats about his passing receipts (425) but no passes on, they also seemed a bit skinny on line break assist, it did mention two try assist, but from memory one of them was when he played the ball to Brailey who scooted over from dummy half.

Your memory sounds pretty good in this case Zak. Dugan could be excused for thinking he was a marque player because he was making the rep teams and doing well. There's a big difference though between him and players like Tedesco and Slater. He's more in the Gagai and Chambers catergory.

The other side to the story is he may have upset a board member. They can be fairly prickly and not like certain players and tell them to get their act together and of course you get some reaction. Maybe the current board aren't satisfied with their recruiting as I believe they paid overs for a lot of them. How long has Dugan been there and hasn't fullfilled his promise. Maybe that's why they got Ramien back. Who knows. Get one back and offload another .

It's obvious why the Sharks bought him back, I have no trouble seeing it.

Exactly! But don't let more than one years worth of stats get in the way of a good story.

My memory isn’t the best but I recall when Dugan wanted to leave the Dragons he was quoted as saying words to effect that he wants to be treated as a marquee player? At the time I felt that coach Flanagan paid too much for Duges and the contract was too long. Now that there are so called reports about his poor attitude and wanting a medical discharge, the Sharks have to suck up their poor decision to overpay Dugan for too many years. Why don’t the sharks make him play for the feeder team for the next two years, at least then Duges will truly be the marquee player he c always craved to be. Good luck to Duges.

Whilst Dugan has been a very hot and cold player for a number of clubs throughout his career my question is, can his body hold up to a full season. The other big question is when he does play is he fully focussed. It seems as he is getting older his attitude changes. Some clubs have had players with chronic injuries and allow them some leniency in regards to training. Player management is very important.

Maybe it was because of his stats (including 11 tries in 21 games) when he payed for the Sharks...?

We don't have to worry at all about 2016, the Sharks were audited more than any other Premiers in history and cleared. I'd be worried about the Storm in 2017, have they been audited to the same level of scrutiny the Sharks faced? No they haven't, maybe something will turn up if and when they are.

Baaahahahaha, is "Guru" supposed to be insulting? You too could get toward Guru staus if you ever kept one identity. How many have you been through now? Are you just using the 2 now or has that number of alias' grown as well. Unfortunately you're not intelligent enough to know which one you are using at any given time.

You haven't got the slightest idea what's happening with Dugan, Ramien or the Sharks. You do understand that stats are a numerical record of how a player performed. You see a young fella trampling players and offloading to a support player for the try and say 'he's a good player, he'll go far. Someone else has recorded: 1 run, 50rm, 5 tackle breaks, 1 offload, 1 try assist. That's just the basics. Get your head around that you dinosaur. When a coaching team are looking to sign a player they will watch the video, assess his stats and make a character call once they've met the player. Even rookies have stats It really is that simple. You keep tryig to throw the Broncos into the converstaion because you have nothing else. Extreme examples don't prove your point. I could say Manly haven't had a decent backrower since Menzies or a decent 5/8 since Lyons. What's happening with the recruitment over there? Manly have missed every decent half and backrower coming out of Sydney for 2 decades. What's your excuse? If Brisbane are supposed to sign every decent player in Qld, why aren't Manly signing every young player in Sydney?

Fair dinkum, you are laughable. You: "I must be naive" Me: " Yes, you are" You: "No I'm not you are" I don't mind debating and pulling apart your continual false statements but I try not to get personal but you make it hard. You glaze facts, struggle to make a point and contractdict yourself at every opportunity. This is a prime example, your best retort pretty much stacks up to 'I know you are but what am I'. Not a lot going on upstairs is there mate? :crying:

"If they are under the squeeze now, then how far over were they last year? " Its not how far they were over last year, but 2016 we should be worried about.

Here is a simple question for Nat (Roar Guru) . I didn't recruit Ramien , it was the Sharks , do you understand why they did it despite his stats from last year?
