Tasmania eyes AFL team by 2025: Report

By News / Wire

A future Tasmanian AFL team could play home games in Launceston and eventually a brand new inner city stadium in Hobart, according to a leaked state government report.

The Age and the Hobart Mercury are reporting that the state’s yet to be released AFL taskforce report says a 19th AFL team could be ready to represent the Apple Isle as early as 2025.

“From a timing point of view I think it’s [2025 onwards] about spot on,” new Tasmanian premier Peter Gutwein told The Age.

“I don’t think we’re ready for a Tasmanian AFL team immediately.”

The Tasmanian government pays $8.5 million annually to host eight North Melbourne and Hawthorn matches per season.

Once that agreement runs out, the taskforce recommends using most of that money to invest in a state-based side.

Launceston’s University of Tasmania Stadium could also be expanded from 20,000 to 30,000 seats to host home games before an eventual move to Hobart.

The report says with federal government funding a new 30,000 seat stadium could be built at Macquarie Point, which is within walking distance of the CBD and has good light rail links to the northern suburbs and ferry links to the city’s east.

The taskforce – including Virgin Australia co-founder Brett Godfrey, former Saint Kilda champion Nick Riewoldt, former Woolworths chief executive Grant O’Brien and Ricky Ponting Foundation chief executive James Henderson – is expected to release their report in two weeks.

All of that stuff continues to be built too, in Perth at least. New schools, hospitals (new children’s hospital too), major road projects, airport rail line under construction. We live in a country that can afford to have both the essential and leisure infrastructureinfrastructure. Having quality entrainment and sports venues is of importance to the wider community too.

Thanks for the lesson guys. Yeah stuff having things of importance to the entire community. Eg hospitals, schools, medicare, roads, railways. Lets have million/billion dollar stadiums that are used by the select few. If the sports want the new stadiums, build them yourself.

We have kept North Melbourne, Melbourne, Footscray and all those interstate clubs going by handouts for generations, why not where we need to rebuild the sport where it was once loved? We need to cut this economic rationalism talk out of our language as well. The AFL is afterall a not for profit with a mission statement of being the custodian of the code. The people of Tasmania will pay to keep the team going so that is not a problem.

Tassie doesn't have a soccer or rugby side either ... for the same reasons that they don't have an Aussie Rules team!

Elite athletes don’t have their one month bender in Vegas every off season. That’s fine if they want to do it. I’m not judging anyone. I personally need to be drunk at the footy to enjoy it properly. But these guys shouldn’t kid themselves that they are elite athletes if they like their Vegas end of season benders and drink alcohol during the season. Most cross trainers look after themselves better then footy players.

Merging Geelong with Hobart makes more sense.

Dunno if you actually ever where 18 but footy players aren't saints and do like to do stuff. Do you think a facility like Christmas island should be built and the AFL perform lobotomy to control ppl rotflmao. Maybe we should train up murderers to play as the control of them would be even easier.

I'm always shocked how little knowledge of Australia ppl from Melbourne have like there are other cities beyond Sydney and better holiday spots in the world than Lorne but you get used to the arrogance.

Perth sucks mate. Its a windy insular dinosaur hole full of people who cant drive and meth zombies - the only people who stay are those that get entrapped by West Aussies who trick them into breeding with them and then selfishly con them into staying cause WA people are to chicken to leave home.

The days of uneducated ill informed people who say things like "buliding new stadiums has to end" has to end. The economic benefits a new stadium can bring to a city are enormous. Just ask Perth and Adelaide.

Tasmanian's need to stop caring about football & start watching rugby & soccer. Gil & the crew will give Tassie a team then.

Really? Optus Stadium says hi. Perth couldn’t have attracted the big rugby and football games it has with a dressed up Subi Oval. Not to mention the significant lift in attendances for Freo, WCE and Scorchers. Building that stadium in Perth has been a huge success and was a much needed piece of infrascucture for the city. It brought with it a big section of the Swan river foreshore developed into a playground and parkland, a new footbridge over the river, new train station and eateries. So the days of building new stadiums are alive and well.

Mate those points I've discussed ad nauseum and I reiterate I've been to Tassie, suprisingly because her dad was a navy man my wife spent a lot of her life in Tassie, she was also born in Mornington so your view I'm anti Vic as well says stick to framing. Your arguments are based in romance with little economic logic or actually thinking of the entire logistics of this enterprise, field of dreams is a great movie but if Aussie rules players will leave mainland capital cities to go home then tell me is it the cold, wet, food or modern art scene that will appeal to a 18-22 yo or the fact if they desire a uni degree to set up post footy they will not get the range of degrees on offered in the major capitals that will keep them. If Chris Judd or Brad hills missus or any amount of players can't cope with major capitals that aren't their own ultimately then I have my doubts about these Treloar types coping in Hobart. Start expanding your argument to be a bit broader than what it is as.

Yep, its like Slane has never been to the mainland so he has nothing to compare it to! Hobart today is much more vibrant than ... Hobart of 20 years ago!
