No night grand final for AFL in 2020

By News / Wire

The AFL grand final will maintain its traditional afternoon timeslot in 2020.

There has been ongoing speculation the league could eventually move the game to a twilight or night slot, for broadcast and entertainment reasons.

But on Monday, the AFL commission confirmed this year’s decider – to be held on Saturday 26 September – would maintain its 2.30pm start time, as recommended by chief executive Gillon McLachlan.

“The commission ratified the recommendation from AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan for the start time for the 2020 Toyota AFL Grand Final to remain in the day timeslot,” the AFL said in a statement.

AFL commission chairman Richard Goyder has previously expressed his support for a twilight grand final.

“The Toyota AFL Grand Final is the biggest event in the Australian sporting calendar, consistently attracting more than 100,000 fans to the MCG for the last Saturday in September,” he said in a statement.

“Our grand final showcases the best parts of our game, both on and off the field, and we look forward to another outstanding AFL season ahead of us.

“We will continue to ensure the event remains the benchmark for Australian sport.”

Superbowl stadiums only hold 60,000-70,000 and thats the biggest sporting event in the world. If the WA Football Commission can stump up the necessary cash to host the game then they should bid to hold it, same as the South Australians.

Contracts are renegotiated all the time, I am not sure why some people cling to the belief that a contract can not be changed.

No consideration to playing elsewhere untill other states have a stadium capable of holding 100,000 people. Only the MCG has that capacity.

Contracted to the MCG for many years. Most of us on here will be pushing up roses before that happens. There will be an AFL side in Tasmania, and a third side in Adelaide before that

I don't like having a twilight Grand Final because having it at a 4:30pm start will create havoc for CHannel 7's schedule. 7 News will be at 6pm. Many fans don't want to change channels from 7 to 7mate and back during play. I still prefer like a normal afternoon Grand Final. Many fans want to watch the match during the afternoon, rather than night time. Can you imagine what it looks like to have a Night Time Grand Final when the scores are tied. The game will go past 10:30pm and may finish just before 11pm.

It the GF were taken off the anti-siphoning list it would be interesting to see what the AFL would do in the evolving media landscape. Sell it as a stand alone product to the highest bidder? foxtel, FTA, optus, netflix, AFL's own streaming... everyone bidding. The AFL has always been savvy with broadcast deals, and the need to maintain FTA presence to ensure max exposure (which means continued growth)... I think they would opt for something along the lines of the status quo and forgo the sugar hit.

Agreed, the AFL will take a ‘just the tip’ approach when they feel there is less opposition.

It’s hard in the sense that a lot of people don’t want that to happen. I have never said it was too hard or should never happen. I simply indicated a preference for afternoon. Claiming it’s simple because it involves a stroke of a pen is like saying nuclear war is easy because it involves pressing a button. Events don’t happen in a vacuum. I wouldn’t die in a ditch over a 2:30 bounce, and I have said in the past it’s my firm belief that the AFL are going to try a just-the-tip approach to this and shift it to say a 4:30 start time (in Melbourne though, be serious) as you suggested earlier, rather than go from 2:30 to 7:20 in one shove

It doesn't faze me what time the AFL grand final is played. I can also see the merits on why they want to play it at a later time slot. Like NRL grand final, a larger audience in the non traditional states would be watching it, which increases the value of the tv rights (mind you it would be worth more if it wasn't on the anti siphoning list). However, I would like AFL to spend more time on fixing up the stupid unfair draw!

"organising your Saturday better"... thanks for the sage advice Paul. I am not sure how I have managed to see a single opening bounce before now, but keep pushing that line of argument. As for changing the start time for an 'event' that is a) next year, and b) at the end of a season full of different start times, days, and locations... how can you possibly suggest it is too hard?

Thoughtless baskets. Don't they know the cricket season has commenced? I summon the ghost of Tom Wills to set the blighters straight. Cricket finishes at six, a dash to the pub for the post mortem over a schooner of reschs and a schooner of light, pick up the takeaway on the way and home by 7.30 for the first bounce. What could be simpler?

Oh no, this isn't about Joe having to watch a game of footy in the middle of the day, this is about the rest of the country acknowledging WA and changing something that suits the majority of the country to appease an outpost with an inferiority complex.

Being obsessed with everywhere else and trying to steal their events so you can feel like you're playing with the adults is. Don't worry, no-one cares that you guys care so much about what we think of you, so stop caring so much about getting noticed by us.

I’m not saying you can’t push for change, I think though you are opting for the difficult option of demanding a national organisation change the start time of an event that you seem to be missing through overlooking the simple option of organising your Saturday better
