UPDATE: Fremantle player cleared of coronavirus

By News / Wire

A Fremantle AFL player was tested for the coronavirus after coming into contact with a friend who had been in China, but the test returned a negative result.

The Fremantle Dockers are breathing a sigh of relief after the player who was tested for coronavirus was given the all-clear.

The player, who was not named by the club, was tested on Monday after suffering from flu-like symptoms.

That came after he had contact with a friend who had been in China earlier this year.

According to the player, the friend underwent a 14-day isolation period after returning to Australia, during which he suffered no flu-like symptoms.

The friend then travelled to Perth to visit the Dockers player.

Fremantle received good news on Tuesday when the test result showed negative for the coronavirus.

“Given the club’s position in the community, we made a decision on Monday afternoon to take a very conservative approach even though the player did not fit all the WA Health Department criteria for COVID-19 testing,” Fremantle chief executive Simon Garlick said.

“We understand the high level of interest surrounding one of our players being sent for precautionary testing for COVID-19.

“The facts are that the player presented with flu-like symptoms after being in contact with a friend who had visited China, even though that person had self-isolated for 14 days following his return to the country and hadn’t displayed any symptoms of the virus.

“It was another two weeks after the isolation period that the friend visited the player late last month.

“We felt it was important to be proactive and diligent to ensure the safety of our players, staff and broader community.”

Dockers captain Nat Fyfe said he expected the scare to be the start of something much bigger in 2020.

“At the moment it (the virus) is in its infancy and it’s just starting to affect people,” he said.

“We’re remaining calm, stepping through the protocol and the doctors have told us not to stress too much.”

Haven’t ventured to Westfield Strathpine for a while Paul but if the Maddogs of Murrumba Downs keep emptying Coles out, might have to. Had to donate some to my daughter up at the Sunshine Coast because she couldn’t find any. Looks like I might have to start buying newspapers again to cut up into little squares.

No fans are frustrated by Stephen Hill. Only you. Stephen Hill is an icon. Strange article on which to make that comment. Why do you keep drawing attention to previous silly things you have said?

There was never any "evidence" that any thing occurred any way. Another Media pile on. Justice may still prevail. The bloke is no angel and deserves jail for non disclosure, but not guilty on this charge.

Morrison's fault. More sadly Hill doing his quad again, fifth time in the last two years. he has missed 30 games in that time.I said last year when is this club going to learn. At his age giving him a two year contract was insane with his ongoing injury problems. Frustrating for fans these decisions. They have learnt nothing from the blunders with Sandilands, Ballantyne and Bennell.

It's probably Ross the ex Boss or Harley Bennell's fault.

Yeah? Brissie fans were pretty adept at self isolating running into last year. They should pick it up smartly based on that form.

The player the media is - kinda irresponsibly - reporting it is didn't play on Saturday, and has been injured for much of the preseason, so my guess would be West Coast's players and staff are pretty safe. It's very much a worry though for Freo's players and staff. But we can't get ahead of ourselves when he's only undergoing precautionary tests.
