Rabbitohs ripped off by the refs

By HarlanKemp / Roar Rookie

The South Sydney Rabbitohs were the victims of refereeing error in Round 2, costing them the win.

The Rabbits ended up going down to the Broncos by four after a fumble from Kotoni Staggs was incorrectly awarded a try.

In his Round 1 football briefing on Monday, the NRL’s Head of Football Elite Competitions Graham Annesley walked the assembled media through the weekend’s footballing issues.

It was revealed that Staggs’ 58th-minute try should not have been awarded after Staggs’ hand came away from the ball.

The Bronco did not regain control before forcing the ball down under the posts.

The on-field referee did not refer it to the Bunker and the Rabbitohs did not request a captain’s challenge. Televised highlights didn’t show the error either.

Jamayne Isaako converted the incorrectly awarded try and the Broncos won by six.

With everything else going on in the world of sport, a refereeing error that cost a side a game may seem inconsequential. And it probably is. And referees are human, too.

But if the Rabbitohs miss the top eight by two points, remember this moment.

NQ against The Doggies .... right. A stated top four side against.....well the dogs. Melb against the Sharkies who are not a shadow of the side last year were lucky to win. The travel had an impact. You were stating what a great win it was (and it was) with the forwards dominating (and they did) but still only won by 4. We got a rebound and scored but also dropped one over the line - You get lucky with some and unlucky with others. You took into account all the benefits Souths got. I was merely balancing your one sided and typical views against Souths with my one sided typical view for Souths. Souths were quite poor, the forwards (Nichols and Lowe) need to be dropped for a couple of younger guys who had a real go in the trials and I think will improve us. Saddly we may not get the chance to see if they can do better against the Broncos or any pack again this year as we may not get the chance to play again. Fingers crossed they can get on the field again later in the year.

2 points to make the 8. Spare me my major concern will be making the 2021 sixteen.

NQ flew to Sydney and got the bikkies. Melbourne landed with enough time to strap up and get on. The posession is what it is because the Broncos were faultless until Macca's knock on late in the half. Break down the penalties all you like but Souths' only points for all that posession came from a lucky bounce not a set play. The last line is the pertinent one, the Souths pack, while talented, are young and Murray isn't the dominant forward leader Sam was. Can't knock your backs but as Souths have done so many times to the Broncos in recent past, the forwards were dominated so the backs were barely given a chance in the red zone.

When I was a kid I would stare at the stars at night and dream about what it would be like to travel beyond the stars, think about other universes, wonder if man could inhabit other planets. Now I realise I would have hated it, all Souths fans live on another planet

If the Bunnies need to depend on two points to get in to the Eight because of a refereeing issue, that everyone agreed was a try (including Souths), in one game at the beginning of the season, then perhaps they wouldn’t deserve to be there anyway

Brisbane home ground regardless of no crowd, Souths had to travel up on the day resulting in 10 hours from time they left to game time, 3 penalties given away in 3 minutes from Broncos whilst defending line at the end (all teams do this) so count in general play 7-5, 78% possession in first 25 minutes and 54% overall with the Broncs allowed to play the ball on average 0.4 sec quicker than Souths. Lucky ricochet, plenty of lucky bounces in every game and if the Broncos player didn’t put his foot there then Johnston may not have been able to pick it up. All stats heavily in favour of the Broncos but could only win by 4 points?? HavIng said all the above I thought then and still think now it was a try. Not sure where the controversy is as in normal speed looked like fine Don’t see many Souths fans having a whinge. The Broncos were the better side even without a couple of key forward who i don’t think would have been any better than those replacements. We are way under strength in the forwards and will struggle this year as a result .

and absolutely no decision all night went to souths that perhaps shouldn't have? there is some great stuff on the roar. and some trash. this aspires to the latter. we really are desperate for content now that the virus has shut everything down if this nonsense is being printed.

A full roster, no Brisbane crowd, 10 penalties to 5 and the opportunity to Challenge this decision. They only came within cooo-eee of the Broncos from a lucky ricochet. Relying on ‘they would have’ to support an arguement where there is nothing to indicate they could have done anything.

Wayne looked as miserable as I've ever seen him after the game and he wasn't coating anything with sugar. Maguire was a super coach when he had a fit Sam Burgess and Waynes reputation could be restored if he had a fit Sam Burgess but the tide has gone out and reality is setting in.

Wow, seriously ! If the Rabbitohs had won that game , it would have been the biggest miscarriage of justice since Lindy Chamberlain.

Most fans and commentators seen to give great applause to refs who award tries without going to the bunker. This will always result in some tries being incorrectly awarded.

They could have challenged it. They didn’t. It’s on them.

Salary cap exemptions and undervalued player contracts not enough? You still want more! How about the Nrl kick out the Titans so you can get Arrow quicker! Only in the Nrl could rabbits be a protected species.
