NRL seeking travel exemption after Queensland closes border to Sydney

By Matt Encarnacion / Wire

The NRL is seeking reassurances from the Queensland government that NSW teams will still be exempt from their latest border closure.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk on Wednesday announced the state will close its borders to all residents of greater Sydney from 1am on Saturday.

The NRL has previously been exempt from restrictions on previous COVID-19 hotspots, given its bubble set up.

However, it must re-apply each time Queensland updates its measures.

The new restrictions will not affect this weekend’s matches given Cronulla play in Brisbane on Friday night, while Canberra and Newcastle’s players are not from the Sydney region.

Canterbury’s trip to the Sunshine Coast next weekend in round 13 would be the first travel under threat for the NRL.

The NRL previously had to force players back into a tight bubble on both sides of the Tweed River given the threat of a second wave.

ARL Commission chairman Peter V’landys insisted that for that reason, the new measures imposed by Queensland should not be an issue.

“The latest advisory from the Queensland government doesn’t affect us at all – the competition will go ahead as per normal,” V’landys told News Corp.

“We’ve had no further conversations with the Queensland government, they have already given us a letter asking us to re-install our strict COVID protocols, which we have done.”

Ah, QLD has banned Sydney people from entering the state. Last time I checked there is at least 6 teams in the Sydney Metro area, that is why it needs to be considered.

Because the AFL moved teams before the latest restrictions but the NRL wants to keep moving teams back and forth despite the restrictions

The NRL must reapply each time QLD updates their border closures, currently changed to bar anyone from Sydney entering QLD. They need a new exemption from QLD, it ain't business as usual

AFL moved 10 teams, why can't the NRL move 9?

While we have people like these 2 girls, Evie Black, Karen Rose who are snubbing their nose at authority and possibly more they haven't caught there will be more outbreaks which jeopardize the general community and football codes it's going to be harder. Sooner or later governments will say we've had enough and close every sport down despite what Peter V'Landys says.

No it won't. Given that two Warriors have been refused re-entry to NZ, that issues seems to have settled.

I think the NSW government will act too slow more concerned for the economy. Yep. Which will then hurt the economy more and be longer. Looking at the data, either we have an anomaly, NSW has a strain that puts twice as many in hospital, or there's probably as many undetected cases as confirmed in NSW which will explode soon enough. This is based on comparing their hospitalisations and active cases vs Vic when they had similar hospitalisations.

Oh yeah if we had got to the mathematical side of things I would lean towards saying it is ok. But it might be hard to swallow for the teams that would have been playing the Broncos/Titans/Bulldogs/Warriors in the last few weeks - especially if they were in need of a nice points difference boost.

Here's the key Difference there's an election going on in October. Just think about it if QLD teams were forced to move to NSW or the NRL stopped which is very popular in QLD there are no other elections going on in NSW. AFL is not popular in Queensland and in Sydney we only have 2 teams verses 9.

They went to many, many places. Gave false names, addresses and itinerary. And it appears they went to Melbourne to participate in a robbery.

All rules are there because there people who will lie cheat and steal. The types who complain about red tape or green tape are probably the reason that paper work is there in the first place.
