For the last ten or 15 years I’ve had a little hobby. It started off just fiddling around on my computer with jersey designs, branched out to expansion team designs and then eventually turned into what I would like the NRL to look like in the future.
Of course how I would like to see the NRL work and what actually works are two different scenarios.
When you first look at the competition it’s silly not to initially think there are too many Sydney teams and not enough spread around the rest of the country. The easiest solution would seem to be to relocate several Sydney-based clubs, but we all know doing this would leave a vacuum for other sports, such as AFL, to move in.
That said, I have no problem with the AFL and in fact admire their crowds, so good luck to them. I’d actually like to see them with 20 teams, but Tasmania and the ACT should be the next two to join. However, I’m no expert on AFL, and in this current climate the best solution for any sport is to consolidate and get through the year COVID-free.
The NRL’s recent talks about expanding into Brisbane is not a bad idea. It would give the Broncos another rival and Suncorp Stadium a game every week, so there are certainly positives. But I much prefer an expansion team to be in a new area that can grow the game, such as Perth, as so many of us expansionists keep banging on about.
But again, as I said, for now the important thing is to consolidate and concentrate on getting things back to normal – on getting kids back onto the field, getting the second tiers up and running and getting the crowds back.
Below you will see my diagram after these years what I have come up with on how I would like to see rugby league structured but in saying that it’s a rough idea on how I think things could work out in the future.

My model for the future of the NRL is rough but pretty straightforward. A lot doesn’t need explaining, but if you need explaining, I’m happy to answer.
There are two main subjects I would like to bring up. The first is about jerseys. I’ve noticed some teams, like Newcastle and Parramatta, are going back to their retro stripes, which I’m really enjoying. However, teams like the Tigers could do with more orange and less black, and the Titans could have more sky blue – I designed a Titans jersey, substituting blue for green, and it doesn’t look too bad if you can picture it.
The main thing I want to stress about the jerseys is the changing every year bugs me. I think you’d find a correlation between the crappy designs over the years and the NRL itself, particularly when it comes to club loyalty.
The second topic I want to emphasise is regarding Sydney stadiums. This has been a huge discussion lately, but my model is probably the cheapest way forward.
I had hopes a while ago for a Liverpool stadium for the Bulldogs and Tigers to share, but if Souths moved to Allianz Stadium and the Bulldogs and Tigers to Liverpool – or if the Tigers played in Campbelltown and the Bulldogs in Bankwest Stadium – it would leaves about three or four games a year to ANZ, which is a waste of a big stadium.
The key to filling the stadiums is to have teams play at the same time every time they play at home based on what hour they have drawn their largest crowds. The only exceptions should be for one Thursday night home game a year and when playing any New Zealand team.
Updating these suburban grounds like Brookvale or Kogarah is a waste of money – these places should be used once or twice a year by the NRL and left for the lower tiers for the rest of the season. The only place I would consider upgrading is WIN Stadium, for which I would build an eastern grandstand to make it a fully seated rectangular stadium.
I could go on all day, but whatever the NRL decide to do, I hope it’s for the best and grows the game.

Exactly. Teams with poor attendance in Sydney would hardly make a dent in interest IF they were culled from the comp and replaced by teams in Growth areas....

Large Supporter numbers??? Maybe one for them, potentially IF the team is winning but large?? How is it that a supposedly World Class Football League calls 12,000 people a large crowd. A team in either Adelaide or Perth would out-draw almost every Sydney team....

Yes I see your point. Fittler's proposal was probably based on analysis done by fellow legend Andrew Johns. Great players with great football brains but that's it.

Tim ,not disputing the valid points you raise.I was just highlighting the hippocracy of the argument that Freddy and others use in cherry picking there biased criteria and ignoring others. I'm not opposed to rationalising the Sydney Clubs . I just believe if your gunna be fair dinkum ,then all cards should be put on the table and analysis done independently.

Two tier competition. Top tier is 10-12 teams - expands to 16 over a loooong period of time. Second tier is 12 teams expands to 16+ over a loooong period of time. Expansion teams enter the lower tier and move up through promotion / relegation. Salary cap in top tier is removed and replaced by rules against squad stacking and Financial Fair Play. Grants from NRL HQ are reasonable Let the well run clubs prove they can run like a business. Salary cap and club grants in lower tier is skewed to provide financial stability so that only a terribly run club could feasibly go bankrupt - e.g. club expenses and concessions are also giverned under caps and grants. BRL and NSW cup continue to act as reserve grade/feeder clubs, but always have the option to push for a NRL licence to move into tier 2. This way there are no mergers, forced relocations or clubs killed, unless economics plays out that way. However, none of this is possible without insuring the future of rugby league through player welfare, grassroots participation and diversification of funding sources. If you can't convince people to play the game today, then there will never be enough talent for more teams in future.

Easts and Souths are the oldest traditional rivals with large supporter numbers. And they have won 35 premierships between them although most of them were won in the old rules of unlimited tackles. And Souths won three in the 4 tackle rule where the games were won by scrum penalties and 2 point field goals. No wonder scrums are no longer a contest for possession.

You are trying to manufacture tribalism. Doesn't work, never has.

Kicking Souths out was wrong because they had a huge following whereas Norths and Newtown lost what fans they had through a history of poor results and were demoted or removed. There wouldn't be many left that would tune into another code that they had previously ignored.

Your rhetorical questions are quite confusing. No one has suggested that the NRL needs a Tasmanian team. I suggest that you go back and read the original comment. The NRL has moved on from the days of the Sydney Suburban comp -> some teams died (Newtown and Norths), some teams relocated / merged (ie St George, Western Suburbs and Balmain) and some teams changed their identity (ie Sydney Roosters). Looking to the future, the Sydney Roosters, Parramatta Eels and Western Sydney (Wests) Tigers will have identities that are strongly tied to the three Cities outlined in the GSC masterplan. The remaining suburban teams will need to embrace a strategy of their own in order to survive. I think Cronulla, Manly, Penrith and Souths will be safe, while Canterbury might be squeezed out through changing demographics in their traditional suburbs. But a move to the Central Coast could help their survival.

No, it's not. How many people in western Sydney? And how does this compare to northern Sydney? And geography doesn't have demographics. How many people in these areas are league fans, or potential league fans? it's like saying a national competition needs a Tasmanian team, when the Hunter region has 20% more people then the whole of Tasmania

Geography and population are equally important for Sydney suburban clubs.

There is little correlation between fantasy points and what happens on the field. The points system was looked at, but do you rate all Tier 1 internationals the same? Is playing for Australia the same as playing for NZ? How do you value a player who played all 3 Origins last season but missed 2 this season due to injury? Do teams pressure players to retire from rep football so their points value can fall? At what stage is a player considered a "junior"? How do you value players coming from, or have spent time, in the ESL? And most importantly, how do you value players across different positions?
Dwanye
Roar Rookie
Maybe. Fantasy Leagues work around the world, I’ve done the cricket odi World Cup that’s cool. Supercoach is pretty big and successful. They use a dollar sign, but it’s just a points value of a player and your have your set budget or points cap. Daly M is sudjective and held in high regard. As long as set group doing valuing has it guidelines and independent. Players could possibly earn more cause no cap.

Dwayne A point system to replace the salary cap is kind of the same thing I think. I think the salary cap works fine there hasn't been a team that has lingered too long at the bottom except for Newcastle but that had to do with inept administration, Once they got their act together they are now in the finals race. To be honest salary caps discussions are not my strength I don't really know all the ins & outs of how it all works but I would like to see club loyalty get some exemptions other then that I don't know much about it.
Mick Holland
Roar Rookie
Nick It's not about the AFL putting another team in Sydney, it's about disenfranchising a supporter base that would rather tune in to an AFL or Rugby match then a Rugby League game once their team has been lost. I think the same thing goes with the AFL if any team from Melbourne got booted you would probably get more people involved with the storm & a whole supporter base tuning out.
Mick Holland
Roar Rookie
Greg Your right ! Super League would have to align themselves up with the NRL for an International window to exist mid season. I thought this way would work because state of origin just kills club footy for a bout 6 weeks. To just have state of origin & no club games would be a boring weekend. This would be a good time for other countries to get more exposure to the game and gives these countries a bit more experience which hopefully leads to higher standards which leads to a better International competition. The 3rd tier rural competitions are the local competitions not a competition in it self so they are individual comps for instance for the North Coast RL it would be Port Macquarie v Grafton etc.

I don’t agree with relocations or club mergers. Relocations haven’t worked and merged teams lose their soul. Sydney’s population has grown significantly over the last 20 years, yet there are less clubs, less games, less fans and less teams. I think the game has had very poor and weak administration at all levels that has seen clubs, juniors, fans and players manipulated by broadcasters.
