Where will Taylor Walker go if he leaves Adelaide?

By Josh Ward / Roar Guru

The Crows are going through possibly the worst season in recent AFL history and will most likely continue in this vein for the next few years, so they may be looking to ship off former captain Tex Walker.

Who knows, he might want to leave and he may have a few options.

So here are three options – all for a fourth-round pick – for Taylor if he leaves his beloved Crows.

Port Adelaide
Some Adelaide supporters might think this is ridiculous, but a move to state rivals Port is on the cards.

Yes, the Power have Charlie Dixon and one of the best forward six in the game this season (ranked fourth in total points), making the fourth-round pick a bit expensive, but they could still use an experienced campaigner like Tex to mentor their forward line.

If the 30-year-old can hit the form he was in a couple of years ago, then Walker will make this Port Adelaide line-up the scariest in the league, especially if they don’t win the premiership this year.

Essendon
With the Dons likely to lose All Australian forward Joe Daniher and with basically no help in terms of tall centre-half forwards, Tex should be on their shortlist.

He’d be a much older replacement for a man who’s just about to hit his prime, but, as said before, if he can hit the form he was in a couple of years ago, especially 2017, he would be a super replacement for Daniher.

Tex kicked 54 and 43 goals in 2017 and 2019, averages 12.6 disposals per game, approximately two goals, 5.5 marks, 1.4 contested marks and 0.8 goal assists. Those ain’t bad numbers – in fact, Daniher has basically the same numbers.

Yes they’re at different stages in their career, but Walker would be a handy replacement for Daniher.

Gold Coast
The Suns have had a pretty remarkable year given they were expected to finish at the bottom yet again, but over the last two games, they’ve shown there’s still room for improvement.

And bringing in someone like Walker would improve that forward line a lot.

He’d become a mentor to forwards Ben King, Sam Flanders and fellow South Australians Jack Lukosius, who’s been superb recently, as well as future star forward Izak Rankine.

Yes, the Gold Coast already have leadership in players such as David Swallow, Jarrod Witts and Matt Rowell, but Tex was voted the AFLPA best captain in 2016 and 2017 (the latter being the year they made the grand final).

But would the Crows be willing to ship their former beloved leader?

He is a legend of the club, one of their greatest players. It would be sad if he does leave, but it’s likely.

To where, who knows, but I’d tip the Gold Coast.

Highly disrespectful post! You guys at Port are all big on history, but it seems no-one else's. Let me remind you,of what seems to have been forgotten: Tex was voted by his peers best Captain in the league two years running. That any player should have Tex as a mentor should be so lucky. What has happened at the Crows since 2017 is reminiscent of what happened to Port after 2007. So based on your argument, Tredrea destroyed your club culture after 07? This article itself provides no sources and yet says it is highly likely Tex will move -'no basis in fact' is the only thing we can agree on, and like the rest of your post has 'no basis in fact'.

He'd get more of it for Brisbane than Adelaide.

I was at a fair or something before he was captain and watched him make my mate's 4 year old feel stupid by completely ignoring his request for an autograph, and he didn't just ignore him he full turned his back on him, then I watched him carry on like a pork chop when Lever left and tried to get him kicked off the team for the grand final. You won't convince me he's a good bloke. Dixon eat's at my missus restaurant every few weeks with his staffy, can't take a mark or kick a goal that good, but he's a good fella. Anyway, we don't want him lol, you can keep him.

That's harsh on Tex. The guy has a heart of gold. His uncompromising nature cruels him. BTW, I like Dixon. I had a breakfast with him at Ballina in 2010.

So harsh......but yeah, I'd prefer Dixon, I like decent human beings over decent footy players. I'd actually just rather have Tredrea, but he's retired

Tex would be a good fit for Carlton.

How is Brisbane not on this list? Tex may not have the same powers he once had, but he's still a good accurate kick in front of goal, and could still outscore the behind merchants Hipwood and McStay with minimal effort.

True. I've been a big fan of Tex but he's lost it...and it ain't coming back.

I know it was complicated, but the upshot was that Tex is not going anywhere. Tigers start with pick 17 and end with pick 17, the Doggies start with pick 10 and end up with pick 10 and the Crows start with Tex and end up with Tex.

Exactly. I'm surprised no one sees the reduced list size as the biggest reason he won't get a game away from the Crows. I don't hate him as much as Brendan, but if the list size is 40 (or worse, 35), Port would have to dump a one of the kids. Even at his peak Walker isn't worth that.

I actually love a sporting mullet. Channeling a Teutonic or Celtic warrior. It says, "l don't care for style, I mean business!"

Why would you take up a spot on your list with an old, slow key forward who’s never really been that good overhead? If he’s not at Adelaide then he’s done imo.
