VOTE: Wallabies Bledisloe 3 DIY player ratings vs New Zealand

By The Roar / Editor

It was a night to forget for the Wallabies, going down to the All Blacks 43-5 at ANZ Stadium to lose yet another Bledisloe Cup series.

In case you were wondering if that was a new record – unfortunately it very much is. Australia’s worst loss to New Zealand had previously been by 37 points in 1996 – this one eclipsed it by one.

As always, and as harsh as we anticipate you’ll be, we’re handing it over to you to rate the performance of the Wallabies. Who needs to be replaced ahead of Bledisloe 4 in Brisbane next week? How did you rate the debutants?

If you need a guide as to what each score means, here it is.

1. Had he not played, the team would have been better off. Negatively affected the performance of the side. May God have mercy on his soul.
2. Anonymous. Was he even there?
3. Did some things that you expect a player to be able to do, but did a whole bunch of other things that sucked.
4. Was passable in patches, but not up to standard in a squad of such depth.
5. Performed his role without anything really noticeable happening.
6. Good.
7. Pretty good, actually.
8. Very good.
9. Excellent.
10. Might as well have been John Eales.

So, if you can resist putting your first through your screen, enter your player ratings in the form below and we’ll reveal how you voted on Monday.

Broken play. You have to have players who have the intuitive skills and speed to take the opportunities in broken play. The ABs are masters of broken play. We did not have the defensive players or structure to keep them at bay. It is not the end of the world. Rennie's true mettle will need to be up to the mark. To get out of this situation with honour will be a fantastic achievement. I do not doubt our players commitment. They need their leaders to step up against a superb AB outfit who are playing with great confidence.

white wasn’t let down by anyone but himself. He had a poor game and magnified the issues facing those outside him. Also Hooper didn’t do ‘just OK’. He was worse than average, He needed to be calming his young charges and giving them guidance and heart. Instead he stood watching his pack while the AB rolling maul scores a try - why wasn’t he getting stuck in to help his lads? Not a captains action or character by any means.

Wallabies had a coach for 5 years that didn't believe in a kicking game, it's not something they are going to get good at after 3 games even with new coaches. They poor skills with ball in hand is partly due to lack of experience at this level, for some of these players they have had 2 previous games against NZ opponents so far this year so they were always going to be getting a lesson on test match rugby. The old saying goes "experience is the thing you get just after you need it" The ABs were always going to be better than game 1, they are slow starters every season, add bad weather in Wellington and you get a draw, for all the talking up how good Australia played that B1 they still didn't win, then lost B2 by 20 so I'm not sure why they were expected to be winning especially with very little experience in the back line and a forward pack yet to fine its rhythm.

Surprised you say he doesn't look to pass. To me he looks always composed and conscious at pace and in contact. He's not Sonny Bill but I think he usually offloads well through contact.

I sympathise for sure on QC's absence over the past few years. I think the problem was he was smarter than. The national coach. And cause he did blow plays from time to time it gave the coach the excuse to write him off. Not sure I agree as strongly on the idea he should have been brought back now. It seems smart right now, after a big loss. But three weeks ago I would have said no, play the young guys but also let Rennie and hard but more conformist veterans like Toomua and Hooper DHP rather than a smart but strong personality like Quade set the tone for this team

Good observations Pinetree I have just submitted an article on how the ABs were manipulating the Wallaby defensive line and creating mismatches, in particular isolating and attacking the wallaby tight five. Hopefully it should be up in the next day to so

Yes we can John,I suggested it before bedisloe 3,we need better quality in the back 3. I think the Reds might try him there next year especially considering Vunivalu is joining. 15.Petai 11.Vunivalu 14.Dungunu The Reds dont really need him at centre they have Paisami and Stewart who are good enough and Flook as cover who I think is the next great centre Australia will produce. By great I mean close to Horan quality.

pm, we wasted an opportunity over the last 5 years. We had a great player, but a journeyman playmaker, at 10, welded to the team sheet. Not a glance was made at the option of an employing an ageing brilliance alongside young uns in development.(Hint: Q...) QC sharing games with the likes of Lucas, Lolesio Harrison etc could’ve expanded the national playmaking IP. Now we are in a position where a couple of international 12’s are our best options at 10. And daylight, due to this recent development lapse, is our current bench option. We are reaping the harvest of multiple year playmaker neglect. Playmakers are like Captains. It is a multi-dimension role and it is a rare individual that can develop every core skill necessary. Even the most legendary playmakers have flaws in their game, eg Ella, and Mella was brilliant! Lolesio had a baptism of fire but we have needed to be testing young 10’s for the last 5 years, instead of the ridiculous Trump/Biden, sorry Quade/Bernard, arm wrestle sideshow that has wasted this precious development time. We’ve started now. Rennie knew it, took the risk, failed in the attempt, but has set the standard early. Players are to be selected in their positions. Foley would’ve been a utility bench option in a Rennie team, not an incumbent 10. Rant over.

He got him once or twice last night, the idea Hooper is the root of all evil in ARU bores me. There is not a single person more dedicated to Australian rugby, no one works as hard as he does. The courage of that guy to show up play 80mins every test for the last 4 years and leave everything he's got on the park impresses me greatly given the terrible time wallabies and Waratahs have had (yes he played his part in that terribleness but the blame cannot entirely lay at his feet). He is not the future of the wallabies but he has one of the most critical roles in determining it's brightness, get behind him get excited about the young guys coming through or your destined to moan about the same shit week in and week out on here.

The ABs essentially outsmarted an inexperienced Wallaby backline , carving them up. Our forwards lacked intensity but broadly did ok at the set pieces particularly. With JOC and MT we probably still don’t win that game but we go a lot closer.

Probably not many changes except JOC and MT if fit. I’m just not sure what other options there are.

Very true. We had to play our #3 fly half on debut behind a pack that was dominated (except in the scrums) on a wet night. What other realistic options did we have ?

100%. In the last 3-4 years oodles of talent has gone o/s mainly because players weren’t picked on merit for the wallabies. The talent got fed up and left. The rebuild will take years. We have no other choice but to blood these young guys. Support snd coach them well. Be patient. We’ll get there. Eventually.

Penalty in this day and age. Prob because opposition was dragging him down. He's probably to big for his lock flanker to get decent bind. Especially with skintight jerseys they use now.
