Wallabies Tri Nations DIY player ratings vs Argentina: The results

By The Roar / Editor

We asked you to rate the Australian’s performances following their 15-all stalemate with the Pumas on Saturday night at McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle. And the results are in. Check out which Wallabies were standouts in your eyes below.

Matt Philip topped the list with a rating of 6.82 as around 33 per cent of you gave him a seven. His tireless effort around the park among many barnstorming carries was enough for him to be named the best of the Wallabies group. Tom Wright was next best, achieving an admirable average score of 6.78 in the wake of his liveliness in attack, often testing the Pumas line.

You were kinder to Reece Hodge than he was to himself, gifting the flyhalf a respectable rating after he put on a flawless goalkicking display right up until the final moments.

Yet, you were not so generous with some of his Australian teammates, giving captain Michael Hooper and other Wallabies stars some measly scores.

Taking line outs isn’t the only value. Being a legitimate option is. It takes defenders. If things work your way, you’ll throw to 6 basically every throw. Best platoform for the backs and good maul set up opportunity. Ideally you want a great option at 2 so if you need to, you can use them. But never have to use them.

Hanigan played okay as an individual but I just don’t see what he brings to that 6 position. He doesn’t take that much line out ball at 6, isn’t a dominant defender, ball carrier or great link man and not strong at the breakdown. He looks better at lock to me.

If Hooper took the first one the Wallabies may not get the next 2 to turn down. So saying 3 is simplistic and inaccurate.

Except it's not that simple. Had he taken the points on one of the penalties he opted for the line out, it's unlikely the Wallabies would have been in the Pumas half for the next penalty.

Hooper turns down 3 kicks at goal for cheika, I think tupou the hooker and hooper were biggest letdowns everyone else were good. Simmons had a really good game gotta feel for Rennie achieving a hell of a lot in a short time but being let down.

Just shows how people’s perceptions are tainted. I bet there was a lot of down rating Hanigan for his one loose carry at the death. Yet Phillips absolutely stupid penalty that gifted Sanchez the kick to level the score did no damage to his perceived performance.

Don’t think anyone doubts Hooper’s effort. Just his effectiveness and impact. Even discounting his myopic aversion to goal kicking or the frankly embarrassing interactions with the ref, Hooper just didn’t play well this match. His first major involvement was a knock on. Shortly thereafter, a terrible clean out attempt (high and over the back), resulted in a “holding on” penalty against the Wallabies allowing the Pumas to clear their red zone. He incurred some schoolboy penalties, transferred pressure by passing to players in worse positions behind the gainline. And with six tackles and four carries, Hooper should count himself lucky to have a “4” at the front of his score this match. If “hard working” was the only key metric, no problem. But in both leadership of the team and execution of his own positional role, Michael Hooper was terrible on the weekend.

Harsh crowd. One of the hardest working blokes on a paddock. Like Hanigan and Simmons, regularly pilloried on these pages. Don't get it...

I don't know about his eyes but he cost us the win. Explains the low score.. should be lower.

Horton is too small for test scrums. Hooper is bigger than Horton.

And yet, off the pine, he has been quite impactful in the later stanzas. But clearly, I rate him more than you do...

Tupou a 6? Basically kept Argentina in the game. Can scrummage but is he worth the 5 missed tackles, 4 penalties etc etc. Yes the guy can do a few things, but the one thing he really needs to do is grow a brain. He’s not tough, he is dumb. Also is there any hooker out there with a brain too? Please contact DR urgently

Tough markers on The Roar. Thought both Nic White and Ned Hanigan scored better than that. Apparently Hooper's eyes are too close together which must have contributed to his rating!
