Penrith playmaker Matt Burton will follow Trent Barrett to Canterbury, but not until 2022 as the new coach continues his Bulldogs overhaul.
Burton will remain at the Panthers next season, the Bulldogs confirming the half’s three-year NRL deal from 2022 on Wednesday.
It continues former Penrith assistant Barrett’s Belmore restructure, with Burton set to partner Sydney Roosters recruit Kyle Flanagan.
“Having someone of Matt’s ability want to be part of what we are building here at Belmore is exciting for everyone involved at the club and all our members and fans,” Bulldogs CEO Andrew Hill said.
“Matt is a great talent and someone that was highly sought after, so we are delighted that he has chosen to join our club and be part of what we believe to be a new beginning for the Bulldogs.”
After a dominant performance in last year’s under-20 State of Origin he played just five games for the grand finalists this season, Jarome Luai establishing himself as the No.6 alongside halfback Nathan Cleary.
A Penrith statement on Wednesday described the 20-year-old’s deal as “significant” when accepting his decision. “While we’re disappointed with this outcome, it’s important we respect Matt’s decision,” Panthers football boss Matt Cameron said.
“He gave particular consideration to a contract extension at Panthers before opting to continue his career at another club.”

If you mean Penrith, as a 14 I'd go with Burton. Wouldn't change the 13 other than put Naden back. Can't see Penrith grooming him for another club though. If you mean Cronulla still go with Burton and shop Townsend.. they tried but were outbidded apparently.. think he's getting closer to 700k than the 400 the media are reporting. Who was the last good buy the Dogs have had at big money?

Your boys still look very good Albo. Mahomes has ice in his veins (see the comeback against the Raiders!). I'd say they're SB bound. The Seahawks drive me crazy as I occasionally put money on them and, you're right, I sweat on the last couple of minutes way too often in the hope of getting a win! (Mahomes vs Brady should be an interesting contest coming up - Chiefs should get the win though.)

I have seen enough souvalis, to expect he will be very good NRL player. I can forgive those 5 missed field goals as just one of those nights. In his first 3 (and only full 80 minute ) NRL matches he won 2 man of match awards ( remember he blitzed the Sharks in his first NRL match which was the last round of 2019) . He is a strong defender, a good ball runner and gives 100% when given the opportunity. Would you prefer Burton or May in your team ?

Are we over hyping him ? He's played 2 full NRL games in his life. The first against the Knights where he was average at best..he personally had 5 missed game winning field goals..5 . Redeemed himself in the next game against the Warriors who were in their moping around period under Kearney. He looked good, it's going to be interesting.

May is a pretty clever player with the ball, which I think Cleary likes. But he is too slow for mine , especially if playing in the backs. I see him best as a forward interchange at a pinch, only. He probably fits into the cap better than the money that would be needed to keep Burton.

Hi Crispy ! The Chiefs are looking OK at 9-1. But still a bit of a query with their Defence for mine. Maholmes and the Offence just keep them in front or just getting them out of jail late at times. Your Seahawks seem to be in cliffhangers every week. Doesn't seem to much in any of the scores each week ? Seems your Defence might be an issue too ?

Less to do with the cap and more to do with there not being enough space in the team. Ivan seems to prefer May in the utility roll and it’d be tough for him to force his way into a starting spot.

It'll be a big couple of years for Kyle Flanagan. He'll have a big point to prove after the way he went out the trap door in Bondi.

Good buy for the Dogs. Looks like a whole new halves pairing by 2022 or next year if they get him early.

Despite niggling injuries Jake Averillo had some nice touches wearing the 6 during the last month or so..looks like he’s going to be resigned to playing the less glamorous position of center..if the inevitable trade occurs for next year.

He must 'train the house down' because I couldn't see what Cleary was rushing to get back into a performing team this season.

I don't rate May and reckon the Panthers will be ruing this one.

Agree with your summation (from both comments) Albo. An excellent acquisition for the mighty Bulldogs - a very impressive young man with a tremendous future. We'll give him a good home mate! ;) (....on a side note, your Chiefs are killing it at the moment - looking good for a double SB appearance/victory. Sadly my Seahawks seem to be sinking but with a fairly easy run home.)

Many hoping for some early cashing in opportunities, by announcing their new buys more than a year ahead of time.

Yeah Nat ! Burton just looks like a natural footballer to me. You could play him in any position. Seems he prefers the halves but he is big enough and strong enough to play in the centres or the backrow now. He has good defence and good hands and runs the ball well. He needs now more experience & game time. He should get that at the Dogs.

Jeepers... another change for 2022. Teams all playing their comps in the future.

They seem to be putting a lot of stock in May coming good in 2021. Probably a good move for Burton, as talented as he is, everyone ahead of him is just that much better/more experienced and the Dogs can really use an attacking half. Was it Gould who said, he'll likely move into the backrow as he develops ala W. Graham?

A great coup for the Bulldogs. I can't help but feel the Panthers have missed an opportunity to have been playing Burton all season in some capacity or other ( 5/8, centre or fullback ?). He is a too good a young talent to let go without really ever trying him out. I know you can't keep them all with the salary cap, but I reckon they might regret this one getting away in years to come.

It’s a bit of shame for Penrith that they had two quality five-eighths trying to cement the 6 jersey at the same time. Sometimes it feels like clubs can be punished by the cap for good development. Although in this case with Cleary being there as well, three would be a crowd anyway.
