Dragons abandon Folau talks over backlash

By News / Wire

St George Illawarra have abandoned their intentions to sign Israel Folau following intense backlash from NRL fans.

The pursuit of the former dual international was discussed at a general meeting on Wednesday night with club officials deciding they would not proceed with an official application process.

It comes just a day after the club confirmed they had inquired with the NRL about signing the 31-year-old on a two-year deal from 2021.

“While the Dragons did inquire about signing Folau, the club can confirm that such discussions have now ceased,” a statement read.

In the 24 hours since chief executive Ryan Webb confirmed the club was interested in bringing the controversial athlete back to the NRL, the Dragons were flooded with feedback from fans and members.

Ultimately it was decided his signature would not be worth any damage caused to the Dragons brand.

The ARL commission is due to meet on Thursday and Folau was to be a topic on the agenda, including what requirements he needed to meet before being cleared for a comeback.

Folau is contracted to Catalans until the end of 2021.

The Super League club was stunned to learn their star centre was considering a return to the NRL this season.

Coach Steve McNamara said he has been in constant dialogue with Folau while he has been in Australia over the summer dealing with a family matter.

However, after the NRL confirmed they would consider any official application to register Folau the door remains open for him to return with another club.

Thumbs up mate, that receipe is very good. I didn't get the skin as crispy as I would like, maybe because that glaze was so good I could have used a mop to put the last bit on. Soy, Syrup and orange juice? Who knew!! :stoked: The leftovers became rice paper rolls and hoysin for lunch and a breast in a red curry last night. Red Curry with Duck is my measure of all good Thai places. I'm better than some, not as good as others. Cheers

I reckon the list of red-line words has become really large over time, to the point even the fairly innocuous sets it off. Agree on the discussion, lots better than some of the ranting that goes on. But to clarify, I'd note that the mob behaviour is not entirely characteristic of one side or the other, but IMO certainly was of the early reaction. In particular, so many immediately pointing straight at youth suicide rates and trying to link him directly to that issue, in a classic appeal to emotion. That was certainly what made me step away from what was going on, and probably a few others. I can't recall seeing anyone defending what he actually said, but if there were they would have been a pretty small number. There were quite a few more challenging whether the level of reaction was justified, proportionate and appropriate, but that was immediately seen as support for Folau in a classic "you're with us or against us" style...another classic red flag. IMO it would have been much better to let the various organisations and companies sort it out in market fashion without all the clamour and noise. It might have left them room box clever, assuming they were capable of such a thing. Not sure the media would have sat still for that though...in the age of clicks, mobs are such good business.

Several Rugby Australia staff members complained of feeling ‘personally offended, insulted and publicly bullied by Mr Folau’ with respect to the transgender Twitter post and his Instagram post about sinners. Sources: CCT Decision at paragraph 98 and RA Defence paragraph 3.12(a)(4) filed 20 September 2019.

I replied but it’s been held up... definitely a conspiracy :silly: I guess we’re pretty far apart on how we see this. To me there’s a massive difference between the discrimination Folau has come up with versus organisations not wanting to be associated with his views and choosing not to employ him. The only thing I’ll add is that my opinion on this has got nothing to do with being part of a mob, any more than yours is I don’t think we’re going to change one another’s mind but I do appreciate having had a civil discussion about it

No FT it’s not You’re the perfect example of someone who throws these terms around without thinking We disagreed many times about JBD, but I always articulated my reasoning - it had zero to do with being part of a “mob” I know you won’t answer this but I’ll ask anyway, why is my opinion “mob mentality” and yours isn’t? There’s just as big a “mob” of people who think JDB shouldn’t have been stood down or that Folau hasn’t done anything wrong. Why is it just the views that differ from your own that get written off as mob mentality?

Interesting that you chose to omit those examples involving thought, given you included flat earthers yourself in your previous statement about people who didn't hurt others. There are plenty of examples there too, even as recently as the 50's with the red scare in the states. It is always possible to come up with someone who might be hurt, and all those prior examples made hypothetical cases. So it is back to Harry's original point; it has been going on forever. And if it was wrong then, it is wrong now...or conversely was just as justified back then. More worryingly though, where previously it relied on rousing people to action, the behaviour is now only really weaponising keyboard warriorism. I would hardly be alone in noticing the trend; literally the first thing on a quick search was this (https://www.wsj.com/articles/cancel-culture-comes-to-science-11578867753) discussing exactly the same issue. And as I noted below the other day, the more it is allowed to work, the more it will get used. It makes people feel good about themselves, like they've achieved something meaningful, and all without getting off the couch. The urge to push the button will only increase, and the hurdle to do so will only get lower until any excuse will do.

Evidence of mob behaviour is alive and well on old posts of innocent players charged with offences by the NRL. The term is well known for a reason and alive and well on social media with a solid and growing future.

Sorry, but I think your position of “unless you can show me a victim, his comments didn’t hurt anyone” is head in the sand stuff It takes only the slightest amount of empathy to understand how Folau’s comments would be hurtful to people. That’s got nothing to do with “think of the children” “Mob behaviour” is just another meaningless cliche. Why are people that don’t like Folau’s comments a “mob”? Are the people that support him a mob? Why do you think my opinion of him is influenced by a mob? I don’t think Folau should be banned for life, or cancelled or whatever you want to call it. But if people don’t want him representing their sport or organisation or whatever directly because of his comments, well too bad. He 100% created this situation for himself. He didn’t have to make his opinion public. He could have quoted part of the bible that speaks to understanding and acceptance. He didn’t have to double down on his comments. He CHOSE all of this and has to accept the consequences People don’t choose to be gay, female or where they’re from. That’s where your comparison of discrimination falls over and falls over hard

I thought Izzy did get a 2nd chance courtesy if the ARU. He chose to continue doing what they objected to and here we are. The globe has made plenty of money since, is free to ply his trade on a good contract in Europe. That he is unwanted by footy clubs in Australia (mainly due to external pressure) is of his own making. I for one would like it if he just went back to France and stayed there.

Doubt it, but it was obviously something. Think you are missing the point though...quite agree all those groups didn't actually hurt anyone else, but people were scared of their difference and attacked in the name of protecting society, public morals, etc. And unless you've got some victim names directly attributable to Folau, or statistics demonstrating a big reduction in youth self-harm as a result of seeing off Folau, it is exactly analogous. You've literally just done the same; why not just come out and say you're 'only thinking of the children'? Which is the bit I object to. Don't care much about Folau one way or the other, but dislike mob behaviour. Especially when it is almost exactly the same behaviour that led to the minority in question needing protection. I could easily see exactly the same people a generation ago refusing to employ gay people, in conformance with the attitudes of that day.

I'm having my colonoscopy reversal in 3 days so I’m expecting everything to improve. I'm here thanks to medical science and our wonderful public health system. It's the start of St.George's second century and hopefully the Joint Venture will flourish.

The Sharks aren't the Dragons' biggest enemy. They were part of St.George when they won 11 in a row. Col Pearce was the reason Souths won in 55, 67 & 68. St.George-Illawarra will have to improve to beat Souths this year.

Craig Field played for a few clubs and his criminal conviction was the result of his problem with our society’s chosen drug, alcohol, the drug of violence. John Touma’s criminal conviction was for selling an illegal drug that does not cause as much violence as alcohol. That drug’s main problems come from it being made illegal by our nanny state. Your assertion that IF would be our best signing in 30 years is amusing although he is good at fielding bombs. The Dragons have won as many premierships as Souths in the last 30 years but have 3 less wooden spoons than the Bunnies. Both are way behind Melbourne, Easts and Manly.

Hardly likely I think, WU. I do see the mob behaviour as the real hazard though, but probably in the opposite direction...the more often it succeeds the more gratification will be drawn from it, and smaller and smaller deviations from acceptable group think will become sufficient to have the pack descend.
