Get your questions in for Issue 5 of Coach's Corner

By The Roar / Editor

You know what time it is, Roarers: after the weekend of rugby, we need your questions for the upcoming edition of Coach’s Corner.

If you’re not yet familiar with the column, it’s where Nick Bishop answers your rugby-related queries, complete with his usual video analysis you see in his Wednesday articles.

Miss the latest instalment of Coach’s Corner? Catch up here.

There’s been no shortage of excellent rugby from the past few days to delve into this week, too. The clash between the Force and Reds went down to the last play, Super Rugby Aotearoa played host to two engrossing matches, and Wales’ quest for a Six Nations grand slam was thwarted in stoppage time by Les Bleus, who now have a chance to take the title for themselves this week.

Oh, and the Waratahs lost again. But you probably already knew that.

So, if you have any questions about how any of those games played out the way they did, or about what could be on the cards this weekend, drop them in the comments section below and Nick will answer some of them this Friday.

Remember to keep your questions as specific as possible – the more particular, the easier they are to go into detail on, whereas more general queries aren’t as easy to answer succinctly.

So leave your questions below, and keep an eye out for Nick’s regular Wednesday column tomorrow.

Given discussion this week Nic, and the dearth of front rowers able to perform their primary function...can Greg Holmes make the Wallabies this year?

Hey Nick,  This is one from Jimbo that I would like looked into as well. "How about an article on the Brumbies rolling maul where quite often the rear pod detaches while the front pod heads off in another direction dragging defenders with it." This rear pod is now truck & trailing the ball carrier (obstruction) is it not? It's quite specific & I have noticed it happening a bit more now that I'm looking for it. Happened in the Reds game & the Rebels game I think. Cheers.

Why do we reward dominant scrums with a penalty when this isn’t in the rugby law book? Would it be more accurate to penalise dominant scrums for dangerous play or intentional collapsing when they March forward and disintegrate the weaker scrum?

Old school coaches always preached using two hands to catch the ball. In the modern game many players use one hand only to take the ball. What coaching points would you emphasise in developing this skill.

Hahaha! I’m in a bad mood! You are right. Another query: the latch. Are you permitted to latch on to the carrier BEFORE he catches or taps? And one more: if you are up against the clock, down by 4, why form a LO (which you must still win) rather than tap + go? Couldn’t you basically form a maul, anyway?

Another question- do you agree that the way the advantage law is currently refereed is ruining the flow of games? For example if team A knocks on and team B gets possession, what is the point of coming back for a scrum multiple phases later? Surely having possession is itself an ‘advantage’, particularly given the lottery of the modern scrum?

I have a question- why do we reward players (‘jackals’) with a penalty at the breakdown for getting hands on the ball, even when the tackled player has released the ball and committed no offence?

Nick may disagree but I believe scrums collapse because teams are playing for penalties

My parent’s house had a long veranda, with posts, and French windows between which there were brick walls. I would run at full speed along the side of the house passing a rugby ball against the bricks and catching it between the posts. I never hit the windows and rarely dropped a ball. Probably not something you could replicate but it worked for me ..
