Blues not feeling the heat after poor start

By News / Wire

A frustrated David Teague has dismissed talk of the pressure ramping up at Carlton after the Blues slumped to a 0-2 start for a ninth-straight AFL season.

Not since 2012 have Carlton been able to taste victory in the opening two rounds of the season and that concerning trend continued with a 21-point defeat to Collingwood at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Thursday night.

Despite encouraging periods of play against the Magpies, the Blues were exposed defensively and could not capitalise on the dominance in their forward-half.

After a promising display against reigning premiers Richmond in Round 1, a loss to an under-siege Collingwood stings the Blues coach.

“I was frustrated with the way we started in terms of how easy they scored,” Teague said.

“We want to play 120 minutes of perfect football, and we understand that’s not going to be the case.

“I have absolute belief in this group. We’ll get there. I’m not going to lose any belief in this group.

“I know our fans will probably be a bit frustrated and they’re hurting, they’re disappointed. We all are, the players especially.”

Teague backed Patrick Cripps, who is playing below his lofty standards and denied the Blues co-captain is carrying any sort of injury.

“I thought (Cripps) looked dangerous forward,” Teague said.

“I think he was still strong around the clearances, not sure of the exact numbers, but thought he was probably one of our better performers.

“I know last year Patrick got lots of shots on goal and didn’t finish his work and he’s been working on that from a forward craft point of view.”

Carlton will face Fremantle next at Marvel Stadium in a bid to avoid slumping to three straight defeats, which would put their bid to play finals for the first time in eight years in jeopardy.

Dow has been really good this year. Fisher is dangerous around goal (and if you think size is the key what about Daniels). SP is a beautiful kick but I agree he needs to step up. Plowman has had a couple of bad games but some great ones last year. I think the talent is there but the killer instinct isn't. I like Richmond's "humble but hungry" mantra and I'd like to see bit more mongrel hunger. What intrigued and hopeful to hear media reports that despite Teague's press conference the coaches gave them a roasting post game.

We've had 55+ for the past three years, least it wouldn't be so predictable if anyone other than Carlton played Can't tell me a Bulldogs v Saints game wouldn't have been better.

For mine Carlton are playing a style that is both I'll suited to the players and the competition. Throw in the regular passengers that keep being gifted games and the result is average scoring and high scores against. Teague has them pressing up too hard. Forward line gets congested, options to move the ball are limited and without manic pressure the ball comes out. It's only round two though and a long season ahead

That’s a fair call. There’s significant concern that a large number of those young promising players we recruited 3,4,5 years ago have not or are not going to develop into much more than fringe players. At the same time I don’t think Teagues getting the best out of them or demonstrating great tactical nous or game plans. He’s only entering his second full year as coach so at the very least judgement should be reserved until years end.

Sides like Collingwood Richmond and Carlton will always get prime time coverage because of the crowds they pull, which is understandable but can also work against them, can't recall last time Carlton where 2-0.Happy to get shunted to a sunday 1pm game against who many believe will be bottom 4 first up[no disrespect kanga fans but you are rebuilding] ,first couple of games always tricky,Bergmann made his debut,Bonner Drew and Farrell got game time ,,probably a good build up with a couple still missing, blow the cobwebs out ,thats how I look at these days, would love to take the Tigers on 1st up at the G but if AFL house say no well ok

It's not Teague's fault PB, he can't play the game for them.....it's the Players fault. They fumble constantly, drop marks and miss too many targets in the forward line. They were not outplayed, they were outscored. They need to start showing some poise and hit the scoreboard soon otherwise they will never make the 8.

Macca, the Blues lost the game in the 3rd quarter. They had so much of the play in their forward but they dropped marks, fumbled the ball and couldn't hit a target. They were not outplayed, they were just outscored. They need to find that finishing polish from somewhere soon otherwise it looks like it will be another lost year.

I think Nic Newman is a huge loss at this point. Calm heads are few and far between at Princes Park.

How Casboult has stayed on any list this long is beyond mystifying. You'd think Carlton fans would be used to the trademark easy miss from him by now but seemingly not. Seems to show glimpses of being a football player every time contract negotiations come around.

I didn't notice Setterfield at all Macca but both the Pies wings and the Blues wings seemed to rotate - rest -back and forth regularly . Noble was wing and then half back, Crisp wing and then centre, Sidebottom wing and then forward, Tyler Brown, Daicos at times and the Blues also changed wings a bit which is something you dont see on TV at all. I thought Setterfield was putting time into Sidebottom unless I have the wrong bloke.

Col, pour inside 50 efficiency was very good in the first half, the third quarter we got the ball locked in our fwd 50 but this also meant the pies had massive numbers in there as well, this lead to a drop in efficiency. The last quarter was the only time I thought we consistently made poor choices going inside 50.

Spot on Peter, as always, except that the Blues supporters, at least the ones I know, are still so far steeped in the Elliott-era la la land that they can't make as near as an healthy assessment as yours. Anyone who pulls on the navy blue is automatically a 'superstar' (how Casboult made a career in the league for a decade is mind-boggling) the premership is theirs to lose from round one and they're only an orgasm away from fulfilling the Ratten prophesy of coming. Point is they're flaccid. The sooner they realise they're just a battling Victorian club far removed from the days of the brown paper bag, the sooner they'll be on their way to something significant. They need to shut out this vacuous hype like all good clubs do. I do agree they have some talent on their list but doesn't every team?

Ho many were from midfielders under no pressure lacing out an opponent on the lead? Even the best defenders have trouble with that.

TDK should replace Levi and give us more up forward and in the ruck as he returns from injury, getting a Charlie/ JSOS/McGovern back as a third tall will help up forward as well - although it will be interesting to see who goes out if they come back. Hopefully we see Kemp & Philp pushing for a senior spot when the return to fitness and it will be interesting to see what they do down back when Marchbank & Newman are fit. I would be interested on your thought on Setterfield last night from a live perspective, I thought he had a good year last year and was our best player in both pre-season games but has been underwhelming in the first 2 rounds - was he playin a defensive wing role?

Maybe if Port could get more than 50k members they might get some marquee games.
