Xerri eyes NFL opportunity

By The Roar / Editor

Bronson Xerri, exiled from the NRL for four years after he was caught with banned substances in his system, has set his sights on a new goal: making it in the NFL.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Xerri has approached Pacific Sports Management – the same agency that helped Valentine Holmes try his hand at American football – to assist him in achieving his newfound ambitions.

At only 20 years of age, the young man certainly has time on his side, but there are still big question marks over whether he would be able to cut it in one of the toughest sporting competitions in the world.

His speed, skill and size would hold him in good stead, but he would be competing for a roster spot with some of the world’s very best athletes.

Xerri is said to have consulted lawyers and been given the green light to give the NFL a crack. Major US sports, including the NFL, are not signatories to the World Anti-Doping Code.

In his most recent tweet, which has since been deleted, the former centre implied he also sees a future for himself in the NRL.

“The comeback is on, 2024. MIA until I got news for my real fans.”

The former Cronulla Shark also had some words for his critics:

“For all you haters out there calling me a drug cheat, you all have no clue how much I put in the work to be where I was.”

As Xerri stated, he will be eligible to return to the NRL for the 2024 season, but it remains to be seen what his prospects will be at that point in time.

There was a grid iron player came over from the states a few years ago G H, think he was with Ipswich or Souths Logan in the Q Cup, don’t know what became of him. Reminds me of Manfred Moore, who trialled with Newtown? in the 70s or 80s I think it was.

A young gridiron player, who was good enough to play for a franchise team would have every chance of being successful in the NRL. Not as a ball player, obviously, but give them a year and they could make it as a winger or front rower. The pure athletic requirements of the NFL are on a different tier to the NRL. People who fail to make it as NFL players medal in the olympics.

He is not in the class of Hayne and Holmes and they failed.

You have to finish high school to go to college.

Except there will be no hype. Hayne and Holmes were elite level athletes at the very top of the NRL’s pecking order when they tried their hands. Xerri was a maybe for origin in the next couple of years.

I’d say the Newcastle side today was stronger than our reserve grade side, which beat close to a first grade St George side in the second half of the Charity Shield. Notwithstanding the injuries and players out I would still call that a pretty good improvement.

Typical Fijiian, doesn't worry about self preservation. Runs like a freight train into the defense.

14 vs 17 mate with Pearce, Mann and Hoy injured and Kayln Ponga, Bradman Best and Edrick Lee in the stands injured. Let’s not get carried away with Hook’s achievements just yet.

The improvement in the Dragons from the Charity Shield to now is significant. Hook is doing a good job.

Well the question of how the Dragons will survive without Ben Hunt has been answered. Though it’s still doubtful that the Dragons can rely on 3 key players getting injured each week for their opposition.
