The five signings the Broncos must make

By Guy Hazlewood / Roar Rookie

After Thursday’s match-up against the Penrith Panthers, the Brisbane Broncos proved they have the desire and talent within the team to match it with the top half of the competition.

However, individuals within the Broncos let them down time and time again with poor errors and even poorer performances. The Broncos must look around the NRL for players who show grit and determination – something that they lack.

There are several players off-contract at the Broncos and players they are trying to move on. If the stars align, these are the five players Brisbane should sign to again make them the powerhouse they once were.

1. Adam Reynolds (2022)
Adam Reynolds is currently one of the best halfbacks in the world, behind Nathan Cleary, of course, and the Broncos would be stupid not to chase after him. It still bewilders me that he is even up for grabs and if the Broncos can sign him, it would be a massive coup for not only the club, but for their young halves in Brodie Croft and Tom Dearden.

2. Kurt Capewell (2022)
Kurt Capewell is 2020’s State of Origin hero and is only growing as a player. The Broncos lack strong edge back rowers and Capewell can fill that void.

3. Dale Finucane (2022)
Dale Finucane is a premiership winner, State of Origin winner and has been in the Storm system for a few years now. The Broncos can use his time at the Storm to lead and guide the younger Broncos forward pack.

4. Corey Horsburgh (2023)
Corey Horsburgh is a young, fiery redhead from Queensland and is currently playing in the NSW Cup due to a pre-season drink-driving incident. He is passionate and tough and would bring impact from the bench for the Broncos.

5. Lindsay Collins (2023)
Lindsay Collins is another 2020 State of Origin hero and is going from strength to strength in 2021. His line speed and big carries would make the Broncos forward pack just that little bit more intimidating.

These signings are not quick fixes, and besides Reynolds, these signings have many years of rugby league left in them.

The Broncos also must offload a number of players to make room within their cap space and playing roster.

But with these signings and the current group of young Broncos forwards and backs, Kevin Walters’ side could be a title contender within three years.

Ex bronco too. I’m not laughing. Just up the Pacific Highway as well. BB’s sure do need to look at all options. Good call.

But then he retires and you are back to square one... I would be looking more for someone with 3-4 years first grade experience who is just coming into his prime and with a proven track record. Kevin Walters himself had 50 games for Canberra before coming to the Broncos. I know I'll be laughed at, but I'd go for Ash Taylor, fits the bill perfectly and on the right money would be a good buy.

Cut Lodge, Glen and Mead to begin with. They are not up to the standard.

I agree the Broncos don’t need to be a retirement home for over the hill players. I think your correct in most of your rebuttal of players to sign. Capewell still has a lot to offer. Yes Collins would certainly work for his money. The biggest problem is the halves. Croft would not do up Walley Lewis’s shoelace. Milford has already been given the boot. He won’t return. Does not even impress in the Intrust Super Cup. Deardon is a real prospect but can’t shine in a beaten team. So some of the halves off contract could add to the Bronx roster. Reynolds is one. Everybody said Tom Bradley was over the hill. Well he delivered. Sometimes a special player with a lot of experience can help a rookie squad go all the way. Is it worth a chance. Tampa Bay thought so ages 43. Yes apples and oranges but the BB’s need something to lift their heads.

Kind of ironic that the team trying to rebuild and replace players like Lockyer, Webcke, Civenociva, Hodges, Thaiday and so on, are up against the team that for 35 years have never really replaced Sterling, Kenny, Ella, Grothe, Price. Let’s hope the Broncos find their replacements sooner than Parra.

This is all total nonsense. The Broncos need to trim their roster, not add more players to it. They need to see what they've actually already got before they go on yet another mindless spending spree. They actually need to put together a plan for R&R, instead of just signing the biggest name on the market.

1 Reynolds. Broncos have spent the last 15 years signing over the hill stars on the way out or injury prone. So that's a nah. 2 Capewell. We destroyed the whole team to bring through young forwards. Kurt is surplus to requirements, he is no Darren Smith or Gillmeister. So nah 3 Finucane. Another 30 year old backrower. I don't care if he is better than the Beatles, that's a nah. 4 Corey H. We already have a pack long on potential, signing another potential star is a waste of time. Nah. 5 Collins. A 25 year old top shelf prop with four years experience at a winning club. Just coming into his prime. Can only improve the forward rotation, this one is a definite yeah.

I remember a young prop who always seemed to lose the ball in his first hit up. His name was Shane Webke.

Yes over 100 first grade games and a strong defender as well as a clever dummy half. Good signing. Eels v Bronx in Darwin. It’s on.

Nat, does the management of Latrell's personality concern you?

I personally think that Boyd's poor form (sometimes due to injury) and lack of apparent care and attitude on the field in his last three years at the Broncs went quite some way to letting all the players know that mediocrity is acceptable. And they embraced that mantra fully. Boyd barely ever ran at full pace or put his body on the line in defense and often looked like someone had kicked his dog. He had a right to his back-ended contract payments because that was a deal. But he had no right being captain or even on the field.

Lodge certainly had more line speed last weekend and it was noticeable. But sometimes it looks as though he is running in treacle and with no momentum or acceleration he doesn't seem to have the leg drive to generate power and is ineffective at bending the defensive line. Last week's game showed glimpses of what Bennett got out of him early in his Broncos tenure.

But then you need to understand whether or not the act of Milford being dropped by the coach was the cause of the forwards playing well. Or was it that Milford was not in the team? Or that Kevvie let go of one of his two blow ups before the game that caused the change in attitude and execution.

FWI, they've just signed Danny Levi from Qld Cup, for the rest of the season. https://wwos.nine.com.au/nrl/nrl-2021-brisbane-broncos-sign-danny-levi-from-queensland-cup/520c4cd8-42ef-4bfc-8ec3-f8cced952b84

He is trying his but off. He inherited the roster. Six games in it hard to judge. Big improvement on Siebold.
