AFL fixtures in chaos with Tigers-Crows match moved to Sydney

By Oliver Caffrey / Wire

Richmond’s match against Adelaide at the MCG has been moved to Sydney as the AFL scrambles to deal with a looming lockdown in Victoria.

The AFL season has been plunged into crisis before round 11 due to a fresh COVID-19 outbreak in Melbourne.

Gold Coast’s clash with Hawthorn in Darwin on Saturday night is in limbo and will almost certainly not be played in the Northern Territory capital.

The South Australian government closing its border to Victoria has created issues for Sunday’s match between the Tigers and the Crows.

With Sydney due to play Carlton at the SCG on Sunday, Giants Stadium looms as the likely option for the relocated match between Richmond and Adelaide.

The Tigers will fly out of Melbourne on Thursday afternoon and preparing to be away for an extended period as they were during last year’s premiership winning season in Queensland.

“The collective view from our club is we quite enjoyed being away together (in 2020) and we were focused on the job at hand,” Tigers assistant coach Adam Kingsley told SEN SA.

“It will pose some challenges to a lot of guys, myself included, but that’s unfortunately the industry we’re in at the moment.

“We need to take some extreme measures to try and protect it. One of these looks like it could be leaning towards a hub.”

On Wednesday, strict restrictions were imposed on all Victorian-based AFL clubs with players and staffers recommended to only leave their homes for playing, training and essentials.

Apart from the Tigers-Crows game, the other three matches scheduled for Victoria this weekend appear likely to go ahead, just without crowds.

More than 40,000 people were expected to attend Friday night’s top-of-the-table clash between the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne, but the premiership contenders will now face off at an empty Marvel Stadium.

Eleven new COVID-19 cases were recorded in Victoria in the past 24 hours with the state government to soon make an announcement about any lockdown.

:stoked: I've seen them win two, draw one, and lose four GFs in my time watching the AFL. Mind you, I've seen Geelong lose five GF's now too.

I don't mind some cultural aspects to remain to honour VFL history ie MCG GF, Collingwood only in black & white stripes etc.

I think the AFL should concentrate on dealing with their Staff Bullying and Harassment issues. Gives weight to the claims that they're trying to Bully the Tigers too. I think Gill needs to watch himself! Had a little chuckle at Peggy O'Neal taking the opportunity to pour petrol on the AFL fire in her ABC interview yesterday.

I look forward to the day when the Grand Final is played at the home ground of the ladder leader at end of season, a just reward for finishing top... A Grand Final at Kardinia park with 40,000 Cat supporters (sorry no room for opposition supporters) screaming for their team and harassing the opposition, pure heaven......................... .......My apologies, I must have nodded off into a dream while writing.

You don't need rumour and speculation. Go to primary sources, too many to mention. Overweight bald men from 45 to 55 with chronic disease are grossly over-represented in terms of death, stroke, lung disease, loss of sexual function and chronic long-term fatigue. It's the hormones, evidently.

Wow....that was a bit over the top. Got my first jab today which I’d booked earlier in the week. Do I feel responsible for the lockdown and the spread of covid because I didn’t get it sooner ? No way, the continued failures by our respective governments to properly manage quarantine has been the problem every single time !!

we played Dreamtime in Darwin last year can't remember us in Launnie to be fair, it wouldn't make much sense really Manuka - we won't ever go back, after 2016. not till every player who played that day is off the list. tho we play Giants up here religiously, every year since 16 at least, including the one Sydney game during Covid last year. not this year, which is a shame, because I quite like sitting there in the freeze watching us blow winnable games but still feeling like I have seen enough for us to win the comp. certainly the case in 18 (whoops!), 19 and last year. PS Toby Greene to Richmond. we would make him the greatest ever.
