Ross Lyon has 'pulled out of race for Carlton job,' Brad Scott a contender

By The Roar / Editor

Ross Lyon has pulled out of the race for the Carlton coaching job, according to a report on the Herald Sun.

Lyon was the favourite to replace David Teague, especially after expressing interest in it before Teague was sacked last week.

The former St Kilda and Fremantle coach contacted Carlton president Luke Sayers on Thursday to say he was no longer interested, the Herald Sun reported.

Hawthorn coach Alistair Clarkson had previously ruled himself out of contention, as Brad Scott shaped as a contender.

On Wednesday, Carlton announced they had appointed a six-person sub-committee to find a new coach.

Football director Greg Williams will lead the process alongside fellow directors Tim Lincoln and Patty Kinnersly, three-time premiership coach David Parkin, CEO Cain Liddle and head of football Brad Lloyd.

Lyon was asked on Footy Classified if anything had changed because of the sub-committee and replied: “I was watching the news and what was being released so I reached out to Luke today and we connected and said ‘just want some clarity’.”

He said he had been contacted by Carlton initially.

“I’m confident in my abilities. I’ve been to two clubs (and made) cultural change for want of a better term and (improved) performance,” Lyon said.

“It’s very difficult to get a group to give the effort St Kilda and Fremantle have done if you can’t create a dynamic and a chemistry.

“At the end of the day it’s up for people to decide. It’s come through my door, I haven’t been out looking for it.”

Caroline Wilson reported the Blues have contacted Scott, who was believed to be heading to the AFL as its operations boss.

“This is not the Carlton Football Club appointing Ross Lyon, which is the way we thought Luke Sayers was leaning,” she said.

“I don’t know if Brad Scott is going to put himself into this process but I know there has been some interest from Carlton.

“We know about Alastair Clarkson in the past. People keep saying he’s in, I don’t think he is. They’re the only two names (Scott and Lyon) that I know about.”

Lyon was criticised by Teague’s manager Liam Pickering for what he described as a ‘pretty grubby’ interview last month in which Lyon said he would take a call if it came from Carlton.

“We have blokes going on television on Wednesday night jockeying for his job,” Pickering told SEN.

“I don’t know what that was from Ross Lyon, it was like a job interview to me. It was pretty grubby.

“I thought it was a grubby thing, it was a set-up interview. It was pretty poor really.

“I am 100 per cent [Lyon] had dialogue with Carlton already, he was talking very smugly the other night. He didn’t want to be disrespectful to David Teague and then went on a five-minute rant about why he’d be a great man for the job.

“I get angrier than this stuff than Teague does, I don’t think you treat people the way he’s been treated this year. It’s poor.”

Teague was sacked a week ago leavng the club searching for a fifth coach in nine years and drawing widespread criticism.

“You wonder who’s running the footy club at Carlton,” AFL legend Leigh Matthews told 3AW.

“I must say, from the outside, whoever’s running that football club has got no idea how to run a football club.”

Prez is correct. The board thought they had a premiership team. Scott was correct.

That rules Richmond out. Freo won't take that. You have to do better than Carlton's #6 and a second rounder. Freo wouldn't take that either.

Oh without a doubt. Sheedy was a very very talented coach you see it in how he set up GWS (Israel falou not withstanding). The blues board think they’re bigger than the club and are driven by ego, they need an EGM more than the Collingwood board that’s for sure. I think they have the bare bones of a very good side but I think if the machinations surrounding the coach continue for much longer than we can expect them to drop down the ladder even further next year

I'm not criticising the Sheedy era - far from it. I may have some comments for what's happened since, but 37 years with VERY occasional glimpses gives one a perspective. For the record, I think Essendon are looking extremely competitive, for the longer haul too, for a variety of reasons - Rutten, drafting & trading (I honestly thought Dodoro was rubbish, but he's proved me wrong there), getting rid of Dan Richardson, to name a few. My speculation is more around the farce that is Carlton pretending they are run by the Board. I concede I used a cheap shot at the Bombers to bring it up, but nothing will change at Princes Park as long as unelected former players and officials hold sway, high level leaks persist (just WHO is talking to Caro every week?), and they continue to pursue a management style they went out with their last flag. We laughed when Judd said they didn't want a coach with training wheels, then they employed Teague. His papers were signed the day he was promoted. 50 games. Hard to tell if Sayers always intended to axe him, but it's obvious he was dealing behind his back long before the debacle that was his termination. I'm not 100% on this, but doesn't Carlton's terms for their Board say you can only serve 10 years? Regardless, Sayers has been there at least 9 years, so is clearly an active participant in the ongoing hilarity we have all enjoyed. I am on record as saying a healthy Carlton is good for football (and a Collingwood in disarray is good for newspapers) - for as long as the current Board is beyond review, continues to be directed by phone calls from outside the club, and believes they can buy success - I don't see them achieving their potential.

One 1st rounder and maybe a 3rd or 4th will do the job. He can always nominate for the draft if Freo have a tanti!

Fair I also think you can throw a few players up for trade like an SPS, a Dow and an LOB. I don’t think you will get much but it will allow you to get the draft capital in to trade for those players you mentioned.

Kevin sheedy also coached the bombers for 28 years so your criticism is unfair.

I am trying to look at the facts but you won't answer my questions. I am not saying Teague was the perfect coach but he would have been better in his second 50 games than he was in his first and the players would have been better at implementing his game plan. As for no defensive structure, 6 of our 8 wins we kept the opponent to less than 10 goals. That points to inconsistent application rather than complete lack of a plan

Give it a rest Macca and look at the facts, under Teague we had no semblance of a defensive structure, the players raised it in the review. Teague himself even said so earlier in the year when asked how he was going to defend against fast scoring team, his answer was we will just have to score more goals than them.

It matters quite a bit where the goals came from, goals from turnover can't be blamed on the coach as they are the result of basic skill errors from the players, goals from centre clearance in the 6-6-6 era are harder to defend and the coach has limited options and relies a lot on a few players getting the job done (largely 4 in the centre) and the goals where the opposition transitions from D50 gives the coach the highest ability to implement structures, the most control and therefore the culpability. You need to look beyond the superficial stat. "Experience means very little, he was appointed as head coach and he wasn’t up to it." With more experience he may well have been and the way things are looking it may well be a case of better the devil you know.

Ross seem to be speaking a whole heap of tongue twisting gobbledygook spin about processes, and "I reached out and we connected" - what were they doing, couples therapy together? Think he was trying to say "I spoke with him". Like someone, said how hard it is to get someone from IT to put together a PowerPoint or whatever the issue was, for a job he's passionate about. I don't think he's that arrogant either. Wondering if he knew he was not going to be accepted by the board regardless of the "process". Ross showed some major errors of judgement along the way, particularly selling his wares on public television, even before Teague was officially shafted. The great news for Carlton though is according to Andy Maher it is the dawning of a golden age for the navy Blues, as their board has finally figured out how to carry out job interviews. It's an exciting time to be a Blues supporter!

I know, because of your ladder position, that you have a high draft pick, but it is not high enough and one is not enough. I'd take Collier-Dawkins (who we almost drafted) AND your best first round pick. After all, Dimma seems to prefer your has beens like Cotchin to RCD. Wouldn't mind little Baker for our back pocket either.
