‘Mistreating Afghan cricket’: Afghanistan captain hits back at Paine

By News / Wire

Afghanistan captain Asghar Afghan has criticised Australian counterpart Tim Paine for questioning the Asian team’s right to participate in major events such as the Twenty20 World Cup.

Paine said the chances of Australia playing a Test against Afghanistan in November were “not looking good” with the Taliban unwilling to let women play cricket and he questioned why the game’s governing body (ICC) had remained quiet on the issue.

“The Afghanistan team has the right to play not only in this World Cup but in all ICC organised tournaments/events in accordance with the rules and regulations of ICC,” Afghan wrote on Twitter.

“For a less privileged cricketing nation as Afghanistan with zero infrastructure and support, reaching where we are right now and playing shoulder to shoulder with top ten countries require sheer determination, passion and talent.

“(You are) mistreating Afghan cricket and all the gains we have obtained with hardship in the past decade. Sports should be separated from politics.”

The T20 World Cup begins next month and Afghanistan are taking part in it.

“I imagine it will be impossible if teams are pulling out against playing against them and governments are not letting them travel to our shores,” Paine said.

“Then how a team like that can be allowed to play in an ICC sanctioned event is going to be very, very hard to see.”

Australia’s cricket board said last week it would scrap the planned Test match against Afghanistan if it was able to substantiate reports that the country’s Taliban rulers do not allow women to play cricket.

Nah. I want Afghanis to tell the Taliban that they don't accept their attitudes. If they do accept those attitudes, let them implode in their own little worlds.

No, read my comment, discrimination is about the withholding of basic rights regardless of whether the trigger is politics, gender, race, religion, medical, scientific.......The fact you want sporting administrators to discriminate against male Afghani cricketers who've never uttered a single word of support for religious lunatics who took their country by force and actually are abhorred by that regime because of their very industry, is disgraceful. The parallels with vaccine mandates will become more than apparent when only the 'clean' are allowed at venues and the vaccinated get covid and transmit it. Banning Afghani cricketers who have no control over the Taliban only discriminates against Afghani cricketers, banning unvaccinated and covid recoverers from society will only discriminate against those individuals. Neither action will change the prevailing landscape. Now I see why you didn't want to discuss - sorry, argue - it!

We need you in tip top shape for the summer banter ahead . It’s my last summer to pay put on Timmy . If only we could start inglis as keeper and Carey as batsman Replaces the wade paine diaster show and gives them experience for the tours abroad next year . We should be really excited to get guys like Carey and inglis in now working to australia’s benefit. Just can’t see what Paine adds this summer let alone what he hopefully does not detract again

Home soil Paul not sure we have.even ever lost to the kiwis here before . Certainly not for thirty plus years . We batted first . Kiwis were starved in heat and had key players missing or injured . T C’mon Paul he’s had his chance we need to put the team first . We’re should have beaten India at home although selectors didn’t help Paine at Melbourne and scg and as for uk ashes Paine was dismal as captain . He was a fill in captain for a temp time and CA won’t cull him and the results went south . We should easoly win at home but haven’t and won’t be down to paines captaincy this summer I can assure you of that or his keeping the way he started to drop a few against India at his age . He will play this summer for his swan song perfect time for him to go although would have been good to blood both Carey and inglis this summer potentially before tours next year

Mate, no, that’s very old-school. A nice cuppa tea in a London hotel, or maybe knocking on the door when you’re out while I’m visiting one of your famous local tourist attractions is more my go-to. Word to the wise: don’t leave your undies in the hotel room when out on the town.

No. Read my comment instead of trying to have an argument. The Afghani issue has nothing to do with vaccines.

You are commenting on human rights and perception of abuse, aren't you? So are all human rights violations in the world concerning women's cricket, or are those the only ones you care about? The definition as I'm aware of for human rights; ' a right which is believed to belong to every person'.. As in, 'the right to have control over your own medical treatment without outside coercion or mandate". Any violation of that right surely is similar to a group of religious lunatics controlling whether women are allowed to play sport?

I can't see that connection. Where is the abuse of women there?

So you’re going to refuse to go to any venue, or picket any government mandated vaccine permit as a condition of entry to any venue in Australia to support the minority who can’t have a vaccine or have had covid and don’t need a vaccine and will therefore not have a piece of paper which may be required as a condition of entry, or is human rights a matter of perception? Is that a discrimination issue, yet?

Not when the suppression of human rights is involved. It signals approval of the abuse.

Well, Asghar, use that "passion and determination" to demand recognition of women as equals. If prominent Afghanis don't speak up, your next generation will be just as weak and just as sick.
