World Rugby explores option of making RWC a biennial event

By The Roar / Editor

As FIFA openly touts a biennial football World Cup, rugby has made it clear that it continues to consider the same idea of a battle for the Webb Ellis Cup every two years.

According to a report in the London Telegraph, World Rugby could consider the possibility of holding men’s and women’s Rugby World Cup every two years instead of four.

The men’s tournament was first held in 1987 and has been staged every four years.

The first women’s World Cup took place in 1991 and after a three-year gap to 1994, it has been held every four years.

“Biennial World Cups have been considered before and they’re definitely something that we will continue to consider,” chief executive of World Rugby Alan Gilpin told the Telegraph.

“It’s an interesting concept, especially when you think about the global development of the women’s game, too.

“But the men’s calendar is very congested and complex, with a lot of different stakeholders, and we have to make sure we engage with them all before we consider a World Cup every two years.”

There is no reason why they shouldn't. Have a Rugby World Cup every two years. Volleyball and Baseball have a world championship every two years why not Rugby. Next year the Rugby World Cup bringing together the best in the top 50 teams in world rugby. Then in two years time an expanded comp. With two conferences of twenty teams in each conference. An extra game for the top four teams that go through and more games in total, 92. But just because they have always done it that way doesn't mean they should continue to do so. If they want something different. Then make a change.

That is so true. They get the high performance training at club level but then at International level the gulf happens. I think it is a combination of things. They are generally in camp for a lot shorter time as they have to come from all over the world. The Pacific Island teams have to rely on semi-professional or amateur players to assemble full squads especially in the COVID-19 world. The Tongan team that played the All Blacks this year was a prime example. The player gets put in a real tough situation when their club threatens them with reduced or no pay if they attend a World Cup. A lot of these Pacific Island players are not only supporting their immediate family but extended family back in the pacific. Residency and eligibility rule changes will help. I personally dont agree with the 7s loophole as that only gets backs and loose forwards. I think a simple rule if a player has played for one country and wants to change to another, they have a 4 year waiting period.

I love it. Should make it every year. WBs and ABs could prepare by having a weekly Bledisloe starting in February and finishing in October. NO BREAKS. Best out of 27 matches gets the Cup.

As I said to Muzzo below, an incredible shame Pichot wasn’t elected head.

And the circumstances too. I believe it was the Romanian vote that was the decider and shortly after the elections their union were found to be corrupt

Living here in Australia, I can assure you that rugby is NOT played in the SH summer. It's not possible.

An alternative could be. Top four from the Six Nations, and the Rugby Championship countries. Two, mixed pools of four; counter seeded e.g. pool one: Winner SN, runner up RC, third SN, last RC; alternative seeding for other pool. Pool games Saturday, Wednesday, Saturday. Quarter Finals, the winners play off for positions: 1, 2, 3, 4 via Semi Final, 3-4 playoff, Final. Quarter Final losers play off for: 5, 6, 7, 8. Loser Semi Final, Loser 3-4 playoff, Loser Final; four weekends, one Wednesday of premium rugby. Or same eight teams. Knock out tournament. Week one: SN 1 v RC 4, RC 1 v SN 4, SN 2 v RC 3, RC 2 b SN 3. Week two: winner of the 1-4 games v winner of 2-3 games, then two more games. Or random seed e.g. FA cup. Four weekends of premium rugby. Run similar tournaments for the next eight best teams if viable.

I think its a red herring after thread of World 12s to show that they are constantly thinking about the game. Its nonsense. That's why the RWC is so special!

Rugby was a winter sport. The Southern Hemisphere have played summer rugby since 1996. I assume that if the north played rugby in the summer/autumn or spring/summer that would provide something to watch during, at least part of, the soccer off season? The Southern Hemisphere can go back to winter/spring or autumn/winter.

You can't have one season that would work for the whole world simultaneously, but the NH switching to a summer game would go close. If they could somehow manage Spring/Autumn for club and Summer/Winter for tests in the appropriate hemisphere, that might work for pretty much everyone. A lot of countries are already stuck with something like that anyway, where winters are too extreme.

You can't have one window for BOTH north and south. Weather conditions won't allow it.

Absolutely not. Greedy B£&@&$€s. Four years is perfect. Worry about harmonising the calendar, improve officiating and elect a useful head. Italy have greater influence in world rugby affairs than Fiji. Let that sink in.

No keep it every 4yrs, whole club rugby season is a mess, there needs to be one window for club rugby for northern and southern hemisphere and another for international rugby so players can do both and not suffer losing on contracts and money for playing internationals, building teams for every 4yrs for WC is better way of getting best of international players.... WR needs to focus on making club and country work for everyone...

Why not, in the alternate 2nd year, after determining the first 12 qualifiers for world cup, a world plate of ??? next ranked teams, to determine final 4 qualifiers for a 16 team world cup. For most of the additional 4 simple participation itself, would be reward for world plate perform. Cheers KP
