Teague scores new assistant gig with AFL rival after Blues axing

By The Roar / Editor

David Teague will join Richmond’s coaching ranks next season as an assistant to Damien Hardwick after being sacked by Carlton.

Richmond announced the move in a statement on Monday.

Teague, 40, played AFL footy for North melbourne and Carlton before starting his coaching journey as a 26-year-old with the Northern Bullants in 2008.

He entered the AFL assistant ranks at West Coast in 2010 and had stints at St Kilda and Adelaide Football Club.

He was appointed as Carlton’s caretaker coach in June 2019 before assuming the permanent role in August.

Sports opinion delivered daily

Richmond General Manager, Football Performance, Tim Livingstone said in the statement: “David is a highly skilled and experienced coach who will be of great benefit to our players and his fellow coaches.

“We are excited to have David on board and welcome him and his family to the Richmond Football Club.”

“Coaching is my passion, and I am excited by the opportunity to get to work with a new group of players and at a new club,” Teague said.

“I am looking forward to getting to work this pre-season and embracing the challenge that we all have, to climb the Tigers back up the ladder in 2022.

“It is great to be involved.”

I will give you just one more - his specialism as a midfield player and coach. This is an area Carlton need to develop - in fact I would suggest that it is the key to unlocking the potential of their very strong list. Aside from his gravitas and putative ability to relate to the modern generation of players, I think he could get more out of Carlton's prized recruits from last year - Saad and Williams.

I think Voss is a good choice for a number of reasons, not least because of his willingness to learn and change.

I’m going on his interviews towards the end Dan. He seems a pretty honest bloke and yesterday when he finally put to bed any hope of coaching in 2022 he said the lure was there to coach both Collingwood and Carlton but that he really needed a break. He also said he was conscious of not being seen to be “jumping around changing his mind”. It’s all done now anyway. He categorically pulled out and said a final no to Cook.

The next Carlton coach will have protection from the factions that swing as wildly as Kane Cornes opinions (see slander of Rutten and Goodwin as examples) from Cook. Slowly Carlton is catching up with professional methods and will support the footy department put in place. Teague in association with Liddle was undermined by the factions as soon as the List Manager (with 2 kids on the fringe) was asked to step aside. If Teague is put in charge of defence - he will not have to play Williams, Williamson, Saad, Dougherty, Newman (after delisting their best - Simpson) as attacking half back flankers on the 2 flanks. Most senior coaches who go back to secondary roles kick on nowadays - Chocco, Richardson, Leppitsch etc Welcome to the Tiggy Train Teaguey!

I thought Clarkson got his mojo back by the end of the season and was coaching as well as he had been for a long time. Getting Clarkson would be a major coup for the Blues and would bring the cultural change they need.

Glad to see he’s been given an assistant role at another club. Seems like a good guy (yeah, I know they sometimes finish last), but good luck to him anyway.

Good luck hope he goes well. Great assistant coach who just couldn’t take the next step as head coach just yet. Who knows what the future may hold.

Macca you may well be better off without Clarkson. If he needs a break then it perhaps wasn’t wise for him to go again so soon. I kept changing my mind about him at the Pies but I’m now so glad we got McRae. Kingsley was very impressive too apparently so if Voss has beaten him then he may well be a good choice.

This will rub salt into the wounds of pro Teague Blues fans. Teague spouting to get the Tigers up again in 2022. Meanwhile it seems Michael Voss will coach Carlton in 2022.
