Last round drama in the NPL

By TheSecretScout / Roar Guru

More and more people are becoming disillusioned with the money associated within European football and still want their weekend fix.

The NPL across Australian has seen a sharp rise in crowds this year, as fans of football are flocking back to their local semi-professional clubs.

Although the seasons in NSW and Victoria were abruptly cancelled due to Covid 19, the rest of the country was able to continue on playing. This past weekend saw some cracking games in the final round in WA, Tasmania and SA.

Perth SC demolished Floreat Athena in a nine-goal thriller to secure the Top Four Cup with a 6-3 win.

The top team in the Western Australia NPL, Perth SC, scored five goals in the first 25 minutes to leave the season’s runners up shell shocked. Athena eventually woke up and scored three unanswered goals of their own to give the score line some respectability.

In Tasmania the Glenorchy Knights also won the title on the last matchday as rivals Devonport choked.

Devonport had been league leaders all season, only to spectacularly fall away in the last several weeks of the competition.

The Knights had to overcome their fair share of adversity this season – injuries, player transfers and oppositions low blocks to reach the mountain top on the final day.

Meanwhile, in South Australia, a goal in the third minute of extra time sent the fans of Adelaide Comets headed for outer space as they clinched the title from a stuttering Adelaide City in the SA NPL

City have been hovering around top spot for most of the season but a run of only one win in five matches allowed the consistent comets to chase them down.

The QLD NPL season has a few rounds left, while teams catch up on rescheduled fixtures – Peninsula Power should win the title, but there are only a few points separating several teams and plenty of twists and turns left at both ends of the table.

Although they might not be super fit or as skilled as what you may be used to watching in professional leagues, the men and women in the NPL are playing for the love of the game and sense of community.

The clubs of the NPL represent every nationality in the world. Travelling around to different grounds can open you up to a wonderful array of cultures and food that the professional league in Australia wished they had.

My own local club – the former giant White City FC who my family has been associated with for over 50 years and I played for several seasons – is known to be a favourite of visiting fans due to the food and drinks.

If you’re after something sweet to try, there is Krofne which are Serbian doughnuts. If meat’s more your thing, look no further than the famous Cevapi rolls and you can wash down both these local delicacies with the strong smelling Rakia

The weekend brought more heartache for my long-suffering local club though.

Sports opinion delivered daily

After leading all season in the race to be promoted from the state league to the NPL, a disappointing draw had several hundred people checking phones to see the result of the team in second place – another former SA NPL powerhouse West Torrens Birkalla needed nothing less than a victory to pinch the title and promotion

A stoppage time winner by Birkalla was a dagger to the heart as they won the title on goal difference and tears started to flow from the fans. The drama of promotion and relegation is what makes football so great, hopefully the A-League will experience this in the coming seasons.

The clubs in Europe don’t deserve your hard-earned money, the $150.00 you spend on the PSG jersey with Leo Messi numbering would be better used at your own local club. That amount of money will go a long way and buy a lot of Serbian donuts.

I’d rather keep my money in the local game – judging from the crowds this season in the local leagues, so do a lot of other Australian football fans

NPL is still pretty tight but City walked the FQPL and Caboolture SFC walked the FQPL 2 I'm a mix of French, Welsh and English and the Italians tend to have an Inferiority Complex when it comes to the French through City are one of my two local Clubs the other being Mitchelton FC who are nothing more then coasters happy to just drift by in FQPL 2, Local Clubs for my Missus as we don't live Together are Peninsula Power and Caboolture SFC the Latter of which are getting Promoted to FQPL I followed Gold Coast United back in the A-League days but Tallebudgera and back every other weekend is just to far and with Petrol Prices as they are ATM to expensive

it makes absolutely zero sense for anyone in australia to follow a foreign club (eg. barcelona) and buy there merchandise, if you're not born there/have never visted/cant speak the language/have zero affinity to the club etc i'll debate this with anyone till the day i die lol your money is better served staying in the australian game (doesnt matter the level) + you'll have a hell of a lot more fun supporting people who you can relate to lol. at the end of the day its relatable and that should be the number 1 priority for any fan following a team

Great to see a positive article about why we should love the NPL game around Australia. These are the reasons i now actually prefer NPL over the European leagues.

No thanks. I won’t be spending any of my money to support Semi-professional clubs ripping off players. I’ll save my money to spend on real clubs at the fully amateur level or otherwise at full professional clubs at the A League level.

good season for the azzuri, the league is already wrapped up and they look likely to go unbeaten as well (no draws or losses) got a tough couple fixtures remaining though including the pride if you're italian than city should be your team by default lol, if not then you have plentiful options in the north. If it was me and there was no affinity to any particular club (eg family members played there etc) then i'd go by the closest team to where you live

Roar Youth Really need a home ground Missus and I have decided to pick a team in one of the 7 divisions in SEQ/Brisbane and Follow them so far we have narrowed it down to 9 out of a Possible 29 on the Northside One thing I Learned is only 3 Ethnic Clubs on the Northside across 7 divisions and 2 of those clubs North Brisbane (Polish) and Westside Grovley (Hungarian) abounded there ethnic ties long ago meaning Brisbane City is the Only Ethnic Club on the Northside

good club to choose Marconi are a historic powerhouse with a great stadium and passionate supporter base. they have always been good at developing young players for the NSL and A League - in the past couple of seasons theyve had over 10 players sign for a league clubs. the stallions would be in the top 5 clubs in australia when it comes to producing talent ready for profesional leagues if you're interest in young talent, they'd be a club to follow

you can still buy a spurs jersey, its your money at the end of the day. but $150.00 on one with kane letters/numbering and europa badges lol?? there are plenty of companies that do knock off jerseys for less than 50 bucks that look pretty damn close to the real thing online in australia (even badges and the shirt fabric which can change each season, can still be closely replicated) even to the most hardened spurs fans, these shirts will pass lol. the gulls had a really good season and were a bit unlucky in the NPL - that draw against balcatta hurt the momentum and then the loss against the eventual champions a couple weeks later killed the title dreams. club should be proud of what the achieved across the various age groups, bit of tweaking in the off season should put them in the mix again for season 2022. overall, as a club though Perth SC this season were amazing, several trophies across mens/womens age groups - the most winningest (is that a word?) club in all of australia in 2021

I always had a bit of interest in Marconi as a child as we played against them sometimes and they were a big club. But, because they are big club with a club behind their field I feel they may lack that charm you wrote about. I will look into Pluim Park.

The COVID break didn’t do Pen Power any good - their momentum slipped after that but their games in hand should see them home.

Good article Andy. I am trying to channel cash to NPL via Sorrento rather than buy yet another Spurs shirt, although I’ll always be a member and supporter. Perth Glory U23s knocked us out 3-1 and played some good football to be fair.
