We need to stop carrying David Warner

By Matt Simpson / Roar Guru

I’ve always been a bit unsure about David Warner. Sometimes I loved his tough, attacking cricket, particularly through that golden 2014-15 period.

Since those highs, he has slowly devolved from exciting, aggressive opener into a flat-track bully – only scores runs at home, and only against opposition down and out.

Consider between 2019 and now. In England, he was famously woeful, only reaching double figures twice. He came back to Australia and boosted his average by belting Pakistan across two Tests (including his big 335), then was mediocre as we flogged the Kiwis, averaging just over 40 – his highest score coming in the second innings of a dead rubber test.

In the two Tests he played against India, he scored 13, 5, 48 and 1.

Now, thanks to a social slip up from the man himself, it seems likely his only preparation for the upcoming summer of cricket will be sitting out the IPL then hoping to gain some T20 form in the World Cup.

How long will we keep carrying him?

Sports opinion delivered daily

Let’s be honest, he isn’t exactly the sort of character to build a team around. While being ousted as the instigator of Sandpapergate will go down as his most famous crime, he also has the stairwell blue with the South Africans just before Newlands, being suspended for punching Joe Root, and numerous social media outbursts.

The out and out aggression, win at all costs mentality that used to excuse this behaviour is exactly what Tim Paine is trying to get away from.

For young players around him, he isn’t exactly a defensive rock that can see off a fired-up pace bowler before the chance to counter arrives, either.

The most frustrating thing is that selectors don’t seem to see any of this. Warner, like Shaun Marsh before him, has become one of these ‘boys club’ cricketers that selectors consider invaluable. No doubt he already is set in for the Ashes.

With the English are already throwing doubt on whether they will come at all, let alone bring a full-strength team, my prediction for Warner’s summer is this: playing at home against weak opposition, he’ll score two centuries in the last two dead rubbers, buy himself another year of opening, and commentators and selectors will be banging on about the ‘aggressive attitude and fighting spirit’, which stopped working five years ago.

There is no benefit in this. He offers little at the crease and nothing to the culture.

We have the perfect opportunity to give some younger options a decent run – and this is better than anything Warner offers. It’s time to move him on.

I'm sure it ust be different for different people, too. Neil Harvey was colour blind and when asked whether that hurt his batting he said something like "it doesn't matter what colour the ball is, just the shape coming at me".

Kudos to Wade for volunteering, but his offer should not have been accepted. I can't trust his judgement. Fun fact: Wade is colour-blind. Fellow colour-blind teammate Chris Rogers retired partly because he knew day-night tests were on the agenda and he wouldn't be able to see the pink ball at night. Wade, however, faced Neil Wagner in a day-night test a few years back, unnecessarily copping bouncer after bouncer to the body. No doubt he's brave, but that matters little without the basic tools for the job.

Tim also says in his comments we all have freedom to choose on travel tours. He should keep his mouth shut Paul. 100000s of thousands of Aussies have not had freedom of choice to leave their country to go abroad . His comments are so politically insensitive on top of his afghan comments . It’s reiterated by his decisions on field . He should stick to wicket keeping which until more recently he was brilliant at alongside with a shocking injury run over the previous decade before he came make shift pr PC boy captain

Hmm you simply don’t say things that are true about me Paul you just love supporting tyrants and PC players who want more of a pay packet than doing the right thing for the test team and nation but that’s your ideology it seems . Mediocrity suits you paul as do outdated statistics and a lack of reality correlating to bad results . I just want our team to be the best it can be and look closely at performances and results and match and grounds specifically . There’s little place for players who don’t know what they are talking about to bring politics in and players that have no integrity for our nation and the gentleman’s game but I see you like supporting these types of people it’s clear. Hopefully I offer you a different viewpoint even if I have to hammer it home at times and perhaps we can find some success instead of loss for our test team

His antics in south Africa nearly destroyed the game in this country, if AB was captain warner would have been out of the side immediately

Ordinarily I would agree with not going too far back re form. The problem is, there hasn't been much cricket to draw on in the case of a number of players, Warner included. Since April he's played just two games of IPL. Even ignoring the fact that IPL is hardly an indicator of a player's value as a test cricketer, that's simply not enough to say "Warner is not in particularly good form in any form of cricket right now". Prior to those two games he had four 30+ scores in six IPL innings (including two half centuries) in April, which followed a List A hundred in March. That's hardly poor form. It certainly doesn't warrant an attack like this article, and it makes SRH's treatment of him look pretty brutal.

Keep show the health destroying vitriol Pierro. Tim's comments were part of a reasonable and balanced online conversation. Yours......not so much.

It's funny but I don't recall his name every coming up in conversations about opening. Your suggestion makes sense, certainly way more sense than asking Matt Wade to open in a Test.

James I wouldn’t disagree on Head . I wanted him dropped My one thought is we are on home soil , he’s still young and that with the covid year out we need to take in to account a year off cricket is a long time so this shield season is very critical for form . Head has come out and spanked it . I’ve always said he’s flashy and reckless but right now it’s the best form we have with so little cricket in some two years really . So he starts on home soil given his age and given guys like warner and paine are getting over the hill and we have to tour sub continent next year and you can’t take warner and Paine there on form and captaincy for me as I’ve consistently always said . We are wasting time by not getting Carey inglis whiteman head in there this summer . Moreover if someone spanks the shield averages on home soil like marsh and we are getting beaten you bring him in to win the series . We have little to go on with warner outside of Pakistan series in some five years of cricket really and it was mediocre opposition batting second In spanking heat . Five years of little test success is good enough to have a go at warner especially when his antics have also cost us so greatly and his team . Pucovski if fit , smith , labs green select themselves . I’ve always said the questionable positions costing us are opener, six and captain keeper. This positions have cost us big time in last three years . There are options with reshuffles and experience and rookies instead of same old same . I also hope they play Pattinson at mcg last year . We may win with pink ball but selectors struggle to look at great sveraged at specific grounds. Pattinson is a case in point at mcg . It cost us against India

James appreciate your trying to write a constructive review but your wrong on my views on warner . Moreover Labuschagne is obviously fantastic at first drop. That's not the dispute . It's the fact that in crises he was an answer . We could have bolstered middle order and the other openers were not working . Labs opened in uk anyway and against India at times really . Sure it's a risk but he did the job . He's a talent . Carey in to middle could have got us an extra 50 . Now for marsh he's made some pretty good innings when other failed against nz and england on home soil . The age thing is specific to the player. Warner struggling outside of Pakistan series where they all smacked some batting first in 38c heat when Pakistan were awful . Nz not convinced on warner as he made runs dead rubber against a beaten fading nz team but before that av of 34 batting first so so . He got found out a bit . Uk speaks for itself . You can't defend a player abroad that in 100 years of cricket history opens with the worst average of all time over 5 matches . Before that ban sure he was a great Aussie flat track bully. That's some 5 plus years ago tho . So no I don't agree it's all about sandpaper gate that's your projected opinion and it's wrong mate . Sometimes we have to improvise or we lose series or draw them . My comments were made at time mostly premeptively with uk and indian series on form . Warner had a checkered past in uk on certain pitches. If you've ever looked at my comments I am very particular with uk pitch form . Warner was a worry as he performed well at oval and lord's from memory but I'd have to check but I questioned him on certain pitches with movement . I've sat live at three uk series in which he played over last decade . Warner struggles with swing and movement and it only got worse last ashes series. Re marsh being old sure he is but his domestic shield averages off the chart and fact is we lost series and could have selected him at home only when openers jusst weren't performing . Marsh opened last shield game with another century . He seems to defy age on Aussie soil . Alas I do support young players for foreign tours . Maybe whiteman worth a go . Just opened with a par of 40s last shield game . Warner has no foreign form for some five years now so don't buy the averages and have seen how the moving or swinging ball gets him .

Paul marsh has blitzed the shield . You quote averages all the time . He's safe on home soil and had some good innings . Warner mediocre against nz , failed against uk abroad , failed against India at home , injured or not . Pakistan sure like most others batting first and two years ago now . Aren't they facts. Reasoned comments my friend . You have to go on medicore Pakistan batting first when they all made runs and matches pre uk ashes tour to form the solid averages. Hmm perhaps I can say to you please back up your views with reasoned comment too. Not making anything up on my behalf m eve. Worse the results for Australia have been awful outside of Pakistan In Grueling heat where we batted first on a home deck and nz where he averaged 34 ore the deaf rubber with kiwis also batting second and injured bowlers . I'm not making anything up which is where I'm happy to respond to you with facts

Whiteman give him a go played great shield first half of season last year opened with a pair of 40s . Time for us to move forward with suck limited cricket . Warner's done nothing abroad for a long long time despite covid delays he won't get any better . Nz had his number a bit outside of the dead rubber . Pakistan batting first mediocre . Warner's only suited at home flat decks but he has also disgraced our nation

Warner's lucky to have a place he's lamped players in a pub , sth Africa stair case debarcle, staged the ridiculous sandpaper idea and got someone else to do it , had the worst opening series in test cricket history in uk , played with injuries when wasn't right and you defend the guy . He's very lucky to put the baggy green on and hasn't done much abroad for a long while and belted a Pakistan. Side on a flat wicket when many others did against an ordinary bowling side some two years ago . Before 2018 at home fair enough and Pakistan but we are going in to 2022 and the guy is 35 soon .

Oh changing the tune about warner struggling the Paul , covering your bases mate . Since 2018 he's pulled his head in ! You think he threw our nation under a bus with his vendetta against the sa keeper and your saying he's been a model citizen since . Why wouldn't he be he has no choice as he's a muppet let's face it . Good flat track Aussie player but 35 plus he's looked slashy and awful on swinging pitches and spin wickets outside of aus for some time and we've had no cricket for a year so he ain't going to improve . We need to move forward . We have lost series and drawn series we arguably could have won

Tims got you there Paul. Warner leader of our ball tampering shame , ego to play when injured , worst opening effort in uk in 100 year of test cricket and you quote the useless stat attacks . Warner knows his body better than anyone he’d okay injured and cost the team after all he sandpapered our nation and his captain under the bus. Keep supporting him paul

Not quite true Jono he’s had some good innings when many failed 15 16 and then his form got better in domestic . Couldn’t have done worse than burns opening when he should have been allowed . We lost valuable runs against India with stubborn patterns of selection for mine . End of the day we lost the series ..for a second time in a row against them o. Home soil

Mike marnus opened anyway alot of the time the openers didn't last. Marnus was effectively an opener. That was my whole point . Khawaja had opened effectively on subcontinent in year or two before . It was a shambles to keep warner going as opener in uk and alas the results speak for themselves . Extenuating circumstances as we could could have had Carey flashing 50s in the middle order by promoting marnus . Him and smith were in early alot of the time

I still think Paine, as a former opener, should've opened, just to take the shine off the ball.
