'Mental health has suffered': England puts doubt on Ashes tour, will decide in next few days

By News / Wire

England’s cricket board will decide within days if the Ashes tour of Australia will go ahead.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has held a series of meetings with players about the five-Test tour of Australia slated to start in Brisbane on December 8.

Australia’s stringent coronavirus travel restrictions have cast doubt on the marquee series, with English players concerned over quarantine, bubble environments and access for families.

The ECB has detailed to its players proposals from Cricket Australia (CA) for the tour and is waiting to hear how many of their first-choice side is prepared to travel.

It’s understood CA’s proposal includes England’s squad arriving in Queensland and performing a 14-day quarantine period, during which they will be allowed to train.

“Later this week the ECB board will meet to decide whether the conditions in place are sufficient for the tour to go ahead and enable the selection of a squad befitting a series of this significance,” the ECB said in a statement on Monday night, Australian time.

Several England players are believed to have expressed reservations about the quarantine period, which is mandated by the Australian government.

“Over the weekend we have been talking to England men’s players and management to provide them with the latest information about the proposed arrangements,” the ECB statement said.

“We remain in regular and positive dialogue with Cricket Australia over these arrangements as the picture is constantly evolving.

“With health and wellbeing at the forefront, our focus is to ensure the tour can go ahead with conditions for players and management to perform at their best.

“We will continue talking to our players this week to share the latest information and seek feedback.”

The statement follows former England captain Nasser Hussain criticising what he termed a lack Australia’s lack of empathy for the potential tourists.

“England have played 18 Test matches since the start of the pandemic in March 2020,” Hussain wrote in his Daily Mail column.

“That’s five more than anyone else – and 14 more than Australia, whose four Tests all came at home against India.

“I’m quite proud of the way in which England’s Test team have kept the show on the road in difficult circumstances, moving in and out of bubbles and spending time away from their families.

“It’s draining. Mental health has suffered. So for people in Australia to start lecturing them, and telling them they should simply suck it up, is a bit rich.”

Australia’s Test captain Tim Paine said last week the Ashes would go proceed even if some England players refused to travel.

“Unless you’ve spent time in a bubble … you don’t get to lecture other people on how they should behave,” Hussain wrote.

“It’s a delicate balancing act for (England captain Joe) Root and Ashley Giles, the director of cricket.

“They need to be considerate about the players’ mental health as they prepare to enter yet another bubble on one of the toughest tours of all.

“But they also know their only chance of winning in Australia is if everyone is on board.”

Jeff intersting with Queensland putting up hard quarentine for foreigners until 17 Dec there are calls to do exactly what I anticipated fly England in to Sydney no quarentine much like family in to Vic no quarentine a bit later . Brendan Julian suggested if Queensland and wa make it difficult to have multi tests in Vic and nsw which is what I was getting at . I thought this was a bit predictable when we were talking about this a few weeks ago . I'm sure tests will go ahead but Sydney and melbourne have dropped quarentine as I anticipated and become the natural fly in go to and it's was all about obvious given zero covid in Queensland and wa and the protection of community with slower roll out there . Nsw and Vic will satisfy the concerns of the poms although I hope we get Gabba , Perth and SA off smoothly as they are the grounds Australia should get results at

Jeff interesting today it's been published that the English cricket families won't be subjected to hotel quarentine in Melbourne and be located regionally . Queensland following suit with a seven day home quarentine proposal . Nsw under perrotet quickly dropping draconian restrictions . It's clear this got the English cricket team accross the line as predicted east coast promises were made to do it at this particular point in time . Wa couldn't promise it of course but perhaps doesn't need to as thy were never set to start there and really If there ongoing problems the players can fall back to covid open states . Of course come december hopsitisations in east may play a crowd capacity issue but at this point nsw premier is making it clear there won't be a uturn and Dan has also said 80 percent means an opening with no uturn . Perhaps the series will unfold just fine . In terms of public safety it would probably not be wise to have full crowds all round or limited crowds but I've noticed sports got alot of favors in east coast to the detriment of public restrictions becoming worse after the contests .

Couldn’t Victoria be closer to their standard, in light of the similar population base? A positive approach to opening up and dealing from that footing surely is more advantageous than telling people they’ll have their rights handed out as politically decided freedoms, once they comply. Andrews told Melbourne AFL Clubs they must comply just to start pre-season training, despite regular testing. They’ll no doubt cave, but no international team should accede to draconian rules when their own country has dealt with the SAME virus in a different way.

Shouldn't we wait a couple of months and see how they go before anointing this as the gold standard approach?

Funny, I didn't realise I needed someone else to put words in my mouth by claiming 'typical' anything, as that wasn't stated, nor implied by my post! I thought I was choosing a country with 0.45% of death's to actual covid cases, which includes a death/cases of 0.17% in the last 28 days, hence their decision to open up under their own terms, without completely dividing their population into clean and unclean, despite the fact the clean can become infected by other clean citizens!

Some good valid points nics . Good to hear some relevant data . End of the day though it comes down to what England will put up with if wa gets cases and lockdowns and onerous restrictions in WA or even SA . Pretty sure it won't matter in Vic and nsw who will be 90 percent double vax by December at some point . They will host of WA or Sa can't . Am sure it will go ahead ok tho . December is unpredictable for wa sa and Queensland is all. Nsw and Vic well they kind of know where they stand I think . Dan Andrews more prone to cover up his I'll prepared hospital systems with low to no crowd policies of hospitals get that out of hand . He covers his own botch ups over here and blames the citizens in general although Scotty has not helped him with aged care and vaccine botch ups

I think it's quite simple matt we all hit 80 percent double vax by Dec 1 . Wa and lesser covid states get real nervous with hospital systems that have not been prepared . People's of Vic nsw and uk have been through too much lockdown to fathom or idea of 14 day quarentine in WA mentally again . Included cricketers or citizens . Wa and covid zero states phase back in slower from January. That means the covid zero states are prone to last minute lockdowns and restrictions and could maybe play a test in bubble with no crowds if cases or England could say no to a particular covid zero state that treats them like hotel lab rats . Who knows bit my gut feel is Queensland will happen with or without a crowd and then the families have gone to Vic and been given relaxed conditions outdoor access and shorter duration in quarentine guarenteed and nsw and Vic could host double tests if it all went tits up in other states. Suspect they will make it all happen with some uncertainty over wa and sa potentially but sa and wa may still have that bubble . Need some.luck too. It is a high transmission virus and people are reckless and getting on with life more with less concern especially youth

It's hard matt but we do a third of those numbers after higher vaccination per Capita maybe less actually as a projection given more spacing, summer and higher vax rates come decemeber we did 18 months to double vax and then all bets are off . Australias people's particularly a third to a half of lower socio economic and small biz Vic and nsw dug real real reel deep financially and mentally for state and federal government ineptitude , not to mention their kids and retirees and singles locked in rooms . You can't imagine what they've gone through for these idiot politicians over 100 to 250 days . Of course many are fine and earnt more money and are apathetic . You are right Queensland and wa haven't readied their hospitals nor has Dans Victoria to a lesser extent but the fed cash taps are off . It'd crack on time . Consider yourself lucky if in WA , sa , queensland and Tassie (Tim Paine at home with freedoms) . Hard yards on interstate loved ones being blocked off

Even afl had a last minute scare with a few cases but he looked the other way. I think all states will reach double vax by December. Reason Morrison and co are questionably reducing vax dates for second shot to 3 weeks (against the grain for us and UK data for higher antibody protection at six weeks I might add but oh well let's get that number to 80 folks and see how people go in December January or later when their antibodies lower considerably compared to a six week break ! Remember the election is may nationally and all needs to get vaccinated asap to win votes

Alot of random ness involved matt remember it’s a virus which was not fully understood and delta highly transmissble with highly questionable negligent origins . people can only be restricted so far and so long In a democracy over 90 to 240 days, half go troppo in cramped quarters (cabin fever ) nsw and Vic has alot of crammed socio economic high density population , religious practise , communication translations issues and then pile an anti vax movement off senstationalised Murdoch media with some hard natural side affects and it’s mayhem . Add Palachook saying astra zenica is Satan when it’s vaxxed 60 million Britain’s aok and you get a nightmare . next to Scotty not ordering pfizer on time to cost cut no doubt as pfizer was for profit, astra zenica at cost on sale ( for humanitarian reasons form it’s ceo) . Preemptive spending was always going to save trillion on the backend. Any wonder 2021 is a mess with political agendas and elections being jockeyed for and the police state of victoria going too far on people after they vaccinated

States leaders plotting to next election with a slightly disturbing wave of authoritarian emergency act intrusions . All that matters here is should Cummins resume opening of the bowling and should Pattinson please get named at the mcg even off a win in Perth

I see wa as the Texas to America m they had independent parliament at one point after they established independence from Mexico . Morrison has lost control of his country as one during all of this m divided and state emergency authorities ., Some luck with some states and some dire decisions with others. Bickering over vaccines , fear marketing and lack of scientific consistency. From 2021 on, Australia a right mess on unification and lost it’s identity sadly . Political mud wars at expense of it’s people’s with Victoria doing it harder than anyone on planet with lockdowns . Upside low mortality downside divided states let alone divisions of apathy inside the states gents not to mention 30 percent of citizens spanked on finances whilst 50 percent of digital and finance service providers and public office employees flourish . A right mess of division and lack of apathy . Let’s get the tests rolling and spank some poms. Maybe we should all just call it Cummins for captain. He’s the measure of humility skill and a good calm face for Australia after the ashes

Look Pierro, i think just for some perspective, according to WA Police, "of the more than 1.25 million applications processed for a G2G pass, 182,062 were rejected." - ie over 85% of applications for a permit to enter WA are accepted. We might quibble over whether 182k is too many, but stories of the closed border need to be put in perspective. Don't get me wrong - I am sympathetic to families who are separated - my partner has not seen her parents for 2 years and they have not seen their only grandchild for that period.

Well we are at the end quibbling over 2 months aren't we? Like it or not NSW/Victoria aren't opening up soon. WA hopes its vaccination rate will hit 80-90% in December (I'm sceptical), and I anticipate interstate travel will open up after that (unless NSW/Victoria are in lockdown). I really don't understand your position. Are you saying WA should open up now with its low vaccination rates and let travellers in from NSW/Victoria, who are currently in lockdown? If so should the Commonwealth provide WA the funding it so readily provided NSW in the event of a WA outbreak? Or are you saying the WA government should give assurances to a bunch of English cricketers which are unlikely to be politically popular - my reading of your posts is that you criticised the Vic and Qld premiers for sports exemptions. So which is it?

And the UK had 166 deaths yesterday, 770 in the last week. You may be different Pierro, but I don't think most of Australia's risk profile is ready for those numbers.
