One charge dropped, but De Goey still to face court over New York arrest

By Oliver Caffrey / Wire

One of the criminal charges, forcible touching, laid against Collingwood AFL star Jordan De Goey has been dropped by New York prosecutors.

But the 25-year-old is still facing a charge of assault when he is next due in court in the United States on December 8.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office has dropped a charge of forcible touching – grabbing private areas outside of clothing without permission – of a 35-year-old female.

But the Magpies midfield-forward is still alleged to have punched and kicked a 37-year-old male.

The man was a friend of the same woman, who De Goey and his friend Luke Dyson were alleged to have interacted with during a Halloween-themed party at PHD Rooftop Lounge on October 30.

Dyson allegedly struck the man, after he came to the assistance of the woman, in the face with a glass,

De Goey spent several hours in a holding cell, before being released from custody after pleading not guilty to all charges.

Collingwood acted swiftly to the charges being laid and on Sunday stood down De Goey from club duties indefinitely.

De Goey travelled to the US during the off-season to undergo an intensive fitness program in California as he attempted to capitalise on an outstanding end to the 2021 season.

He was only able to leave Australia under a permit due to his sponsorship and work arrangements with Monster Energy.

It is unclear if De Goey will be allowed to return to Australia before his next court date, but COVID-19 restrictions could make that difficult.

It would raise his standing among satanic worshippers, thugs and admirers of tats! He really wanted to show himself up to be a real man no doubt, Pathetic individual to say the least. Not worth wasting your breath on...

Interestingly De Ģoey is now claiming self defence. But if this was the case then why would his mate glass the American bloke and then stick the boot into him whilst on the ground? You can use reasonable force to defend yourself but those subsequent actions seem excessive.

He was in a pretty elite entourage consisting of John Cahill, Craig Bradley, Greg Phillips, Mark Williams and Bruce Abernethy just for openers.

Confucius said: “What you do not want done to yourself, do not do to others”. An English paraphrase would be “do unto other's as you would want them to do unto you” which is known as the “Golden Rule”. I'll send the bill for my tuition fees to your email young man!

Let's adjust that statement to take into account all religions then. Have you heard about the Golden Rule? It takes one to know one...Bigot you are and bigot you will remain apart from damn ignorance personified! The Golden Rule is the principle of treating others as one wants to be treated. It is a maxim that is found in most religions and cultures. It can be considered an ethic of reciprocity in some religions, although different religions treat it differently.

Are you inferring that non Christians and people of no religion are not role models, lacking in standards, have no moral or ethical values? Seriously, you are out of touch and a bigot.

Chris, Collingwood have always had ratbags and they have often been great for the club, even if officials and coaches have had to pull their own hair out at times. Ronny Wearmouth McGuane, Banks, Millane Swan, Shaw, Thomas, Didak, Johnson Probably plenty more too. Interesting...we seem to win a flag with more ratbags.... Carlton had plenty of ratbags with their great teams (and culture) in the 70s and early 80s whom we just couldn't quite beat on Grand Final day. Difference between ratbags and dirtbags though. Hopefully DeGoey doesn't fall into the later category. At this stage the best thing I can say is he's leader of the boys (and seems they do love him...that could be at breaking point) but sadly he's a long way from being a leader of men.....unlike Petraka who he aspires to be like. Re tats......I wonder how much is going on between the ears to pay money to be branded like cattle...... particularly even more so because other cattle are doing it to. There's the "look at me" factor but maybe more deep underlying identity issues. But if they can play like Dusty or Swanny on the big stage then who cares! I agree Pies culture needs improving and last 12 months has ensured that's going to keep happening. DeGoey may end up being a sacrificial lamb. I'm hoping instead that he grows up and becomes a mature midfield bull for the Pies.

Jordan DeGoey has a talent and ability to find the footy and trouble. But he has only been found guilty of some driving offences and has been punished like many of us, including yours truly. He has never faced charges in any court of law and found to be guilty of sexual assault and therefore, he is presumed to be innocent. Those in the media that persistently comment about him having a history of sexual assaults can face litigation and should. And yes, there are still charges pending in NY for an alleged assault to a male (likely a jealous would be boyfriend) that occurred following the alleged sexual assault of a female for which the charge has now been dropped due to insufficient evidence. That is the second occasion in separate jurisdictions that sexual assault charges against Jordan DeGoey have been dropped. The NY prosecutor realised early that, due to insufficient evidence there was no case to answer and was wise to promptly withdraw the charge. Unlike his Vic Police counterpart who chose to persist with a sexual assault charge that was bound to fail, which resulted in costs that Victorian taxpayers like me had to fund all for the pursuit of fame and glory in trying to claim a big scalp. Fortunately the courts don’t appear to discriminate between big scalps and small scalps. This was also an insult to the Vic Police officers who conducted the initial investigation that concluded there was no case to answer. Obviously there was no new admissible evidence, probably only hope there would be, or the defendant would do a complete turnaround and plead his guilt. Our taxes at work. You can only be proven guilty of a criminal offence by a court of law and the prosecution (the police) should only lay charges if there is available evidence of a prima facie case that can prove the elements of the charge. Otherwise, the defendant cannot be proven to be guilty, the charge will fail and the prosecution will then be liable to pay all costs. That is why charges that are bound to fail are dropped by the prosecution before the hearing date. Unfortunately, sometimes the decision to withdraw changes is left too late while costs have been accruing by the defendant. It is easy for the media and the general public to grandstand and propose charges be laid, but for the prosecution to proceed with criminal charges and prove a case in a court of law requires admissible evidence. It seems so easy and straightforward to allege criminal conduct on Footy Confidential or 60 Minutes and when it is baseless there is never a retraction or apology from those know all, eminent and multi-talented presenters/celebrities and sometimes character assassins who (like politicians) seem to have privilege and immunity but clearly have no understanding of the standards of proof in criminal law cases. They talk about how “footballers” should be role models yet they are quick to build players up just to bring them down. Caroline Wilson was determined and vocal that both Dusty and Jordy should be stood down for alleged and unproven assaults to females. She gets hysterical when there is any alleged incident involving a female and the AFL footballer is always judged and presumed to be guilty by her without evidence. I await my arrow. AFL footballers are just teenagers and young men whose primary, sometimes only talent is playing football and are contracted to play the most demanding game under intense pressure and scrutiny and sometimes they falter. Furthermore, only when a player is found guilty of a serious criminal offence by a court of law should that player be stood down by the AFL and not purely on allegations of criminal conduct and even if a change has been laid guilt still has to proven in a court of law. Israel Folau was a victim of being “stood down” and he was not allowed to play the game he loved and supporters denied seeing his talent. His career was unfairly ruined by the then CEO of the NRL who was determined to claim a big scalp. Appropriately the NRL was compelled to pay millions of dollars in compensation. If the pending charges in NY against Jordan DeGoey proceed and are proven and he is found guilty then he has to face the consequences like anybody else, but not before. As to those who say it is double standards that he is in the USA, he had a Government Issued permit.

Prior to 2010 the only tattooed player I can remember was #17 Kevin Grose(1974-1975). Our culture was clean cut and very traditional. You may not have followed us back then but I did. This is not the Collingwood way at all. As for Christian values that refers to behaviour rather than attending an RC Mass or a Protestant Sunday Service. I still insist that a proper culture will help us get back to where we belong as opposed to this disorganised rabble that is deified by media clowns who simply want to moralise and line their pockets in the process. New broom sweeps clean!

Shout out to all the Port fans. I’m sorry about you guys losing Russell Ebert. If Norwood lost to Port in the 70’s or early 80’s he was usually the reason. A tough, formidable and highly skilled player and a great bloke.

Pretty sure you need more tats than teeth to be a Collingwood member? I joke - cultural issues are not isolated to one club but society generally.

Christian society? Let not bring religion into it. I also rail against the "get rid of those tattooed gents and get back to Collingwood values"? I dont even kno w what that means? So all people with tattoos have poor values? Isnt that a bit judgey? I also would have thought that over the course of history there has probably been a disproportionate skew of tattoos AT Collingwood - not sure how that meshes with "Collingwood values". Jeremy Howe? Dane Swan - was he arrogant and ignorant? He has a lot of tattoos...

.....this culture is not exclusive to the Pies. It exists across all codes and nations and is indicative of 'sports' fall from grace. This is excess and ego perpetuated by the crass commercialisation that is integral to our plutocracy. Its insidious and we feed the behemoth.

Perhaps it's catching up with them now - days gone by most events were swept under the table by someone connected, but with everyone recording everything now, that's harder to do.
